Huawei may release Kirin 720 on May 30

On May 29, it was reported by foreign media that HiSilicon, a subsidiary of Huawei, would release a new Kirin chip on May 30, Beijing time. This chip is not the flagship Kirin 985. It is said to be Kirin 720. It is the successor of mid tier SoC Kirin 710.

It is reported that Kirin 720 will be produced by TSMC and adopt a 10nm process, which is one generation behind the 7nm process used by Kirin 980. 7nm is the size of the crystal tube in the CPU (part of SoC). The shorter the size of a single crystal tube, the more crystal tubes can be accommodated in the chip, which makes the chip more powerful and energy-saving.

At present, the commercially available Kirin 710 adopts a 12nm process, with four built-in ARM Cortex-A73 cores, and the highest frequency is 2.2GHz. They are used to handle complex tasks. There are also four ARM Cortex-A53 cores, with a maximum frequency of 1.7GHz, for low-power tasks. The graphics processor (GPU) of Kirin 710 is ARM Mali G51 MP4.

It is expected that Kirin 720 will upgrade GPU and NPU (neural processing unit) for AI and machine learning functions.

It is reported that although ARM has suspended cooperation with Huawei, it will not affect the Kirin chips already produced. If Kirin 720 is released tomorrow, it may be the last Kirin chip to use ARM architecture. Huawei may adopt a new architecture to replace ARM in the future. Of course, if ARM and Huawei resume cooperation in the future, it is also a wise choice for the latter to use the new architecture launched by ARM.
