On May 17, it was reported by Digitimes that Huawei will release the Kirin 985 in the second half of this year. The Kirin 985 is designed for Huawei's 4G LTE mobile phone, but this SoC can be equipped with Huawei's Balong 5G modem (baseband). The mobile phones using these two products can connect to the 5G sub 6GHz network.
It is reported that the first model equipped with Balong 5G modem and Kirin 985 is Huawei Mate 30 series, which will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year. Kirin 985 sets are produced by 7nm+process. It is expected to conduct trial production in this quarter. By the third quarter of this year, Kirin 985 sets will be mass produced by TSMC.
After the release of Kirin 985, Huawei is expected to launch 5G SoC, which integrates 5G modem. This SoC is expected to be released between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. By the beginning of next year, Huawei also plans to launch mobile phone chips supporting mmWave 5G networks, which use ultra-high frequency wireless signals from 24GHz to 90GHz. The speed of mmWave 5G is faster than that of radio waves lower than 6GHz, but the wavelength is shorter, so the time cost of building a national 5G network with 6GHz frequency is relatively low.
Digitimes quoted sources as saying that HiSilicon, a subsidiary of Huawei, plans to compete with Qualcomm and become one of the two major suppliers of 5G SoC, a mobile phone manufacturer. MediaTek will release SoC lower than 6GHz at the end of this year. If Apple can design its own 5G SoC in time, it can be applied to the iPhone launched in 2020.
It should be noted that Huawei has been included in the entity list of the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) of the U.S. Department of Commerce. He Tingbo, the president of Hisense, sent an internal email to employees early this morning, saying that thousands of Hisense employees created a "spare tire" chip for the survival of the company many years ago. Today, all the spare tires that Hisense once created have turned into "positive" overnight! Years of painstaking efforts to fulfill the company's commitment to continuous customer service overnight.
