On May 22, it was reported that the latest report from Canalys, a market research organization, showed that smart speakers were booming in China. The sales volume in the first quarter of 2019 was 10.6 million units, up nearly 500% year on year, which also enabled China to account for 51% of the global market share. The sales volume of smart speakers in the United States during the same period was only 5 million, with a market share of 24%.
The smart speaker brand with the highest sales volume in China is Baidu, which is largely due to its exclusive agreement with CCTV. Baidu smart speakers have appeared in CCTV programs for many times. During the Spring Festival, Baidu attracted many consumers, while Alibaba, Xiaomi and Tencent also achieved double-digit growth during this period.
Nicole Peng, an analyst at Canalys, believes that the rapid development of smart speakers in China is largely due to the large amount of money invested by manufacturers in order to dominate the market. This strategy is favored by Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent and other Internet service providers.
Thanks to the festival promotion, Xiaomi and Alibaba have continued to grow since the fourth quarter of last year. In general, domestic brands have promoted sales while pursuing more profits. On the other hand, Google and Amazon focus on improving their own ecosystems and adding new hardware, such as screens and cameras, to their products.
