The strongest iPhone XS Max performance test in history
The strongest iPhone XS Max performance test in history

Apple's latest iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max were officially launched on September 21. Compared with the previous generation of iPhone X, the appearance design maintains the same style, but the internal SoC has been upgraded to a new A12 bionic. How much improvement has it brought compared with the A11 bionic of iPhone X?

First, the process of A12 bionics is upgraded to 7nm FinFET (A11 bionics is 10nm FinFET). In terms of CPU structure, the combination of two performance cores (large core) and four energy efficiency cores (small core) is adopted as A11 bionics. The frequency of large core is further improved to 2.49GHz compared with 2.39GHz of A11 bionics; According to official data, compared with the A11 bionic large core, the performance is improved by 15%, and the energy saving of the small core is improved by 50%.

In terms of GPU, A12 bionics adopts the self-developed four core architecture, which improves the performance by 50% compared with A11 bionic three core GPU, and supports Metal 2 more; The neural network engine has also been improved, with operations up to 5 trillion times per second. The running speed of Core ML is 9 times higher than that of A11 bionics.

The paper data is very strong. What about the actual measurement? Among the scores of the common GeekBench 4, the single core score of the iPhone XS Max reached 4675, and the multi-core score was 10912. Compared with the score of the A11 bionic iPhone 8 Plus, the single core score increased by 11%, which basically conforms to Apple's promotion, but the multi-core score improvement is much lower.

However, when switching to the GPU, we can see the great improvement of A12 bionics. In the test of GFXBench, the performance of the sub project Manhattan has improved by more than 40%, which can be said to be consistent with the official promotion of 50%, while the less demanding Tyrannosaurus Rex has directly broken through 200 FPS, directly leaving its rivals Gaotong Xiaolong 845 and Samsung Exynos 9810 behind. Combining the original advantages of CPU, A12 bionics can be said to be the strongest mobile SoC so far.

From the measured data, the performance improvement of the A12 bionics on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max is basically the same as the official promotion. The CPU has no rivals before, so the improvement this time can be said to be very small; On the contrary, the performance of GPU was amazing, which directly killed Qualcomm Samsung, and Apple's ability of self research had to be satisfied. Now there is only one problem left, that is, the new process of 7nm is used. But when this performance is fully opened on the machine, can the heat dissipation of the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max be suppressed? Is it easy to reduce the frequency when playing games on iPhone X before?
