The mystery of sensor and baseband is revealed! IPhone XS Max chip level disassembly

In the mobile phone dismantling session, the most well-known is ifixit, but the most terrible is Tech Insights. Tech Insights released the disassembly of the iPhone XS Max on September 17. According to the convention, they updated the article while disassembling.

Finally, on September 24, the details of A12, Intel baseband, a stack of charging ICs and the disassembly of sensors were updated together:

A12: True · The first 7nm mobile phone SoC

This year's A12 model APL1W81 is stacked with Meguiar's 4GB LPDDR4x memory on the iPhone XS Max, and the latter model MT53D512M64DSB-046 XT: E. For the time being, the American A1921 and the Australian A2097/A2101 disassembled by Tech Insights are all Meguiar's memory.

A12 chip area is 5% smaller than A11, 9.89 mm x 8.42 mm 83.27 mm two The largest area is the CPU with two cores and four small cores, followed by the newly developed GPU with 50% performance increase, and then the new eight core NPU neural network engine. It should be noted that Apple's A series chips are attached to the baseband, so the baseband will not appear on the SoC anatomy like Qualcomm.

Intel baseband: the iPhone with the worst signal in history?

"The source of all evils"? Intel PMB9955 baseband

In the past years, the iPhone X of Qualcomm baseband was spurted with poor signal. This year, the iPhone XS/XS Max series has become an Intel baseband with a dual card design. When we measured it, we did encounter obviously more frequent calls, 4G, WiFi and other disconnection problems.

This time, the main slot point comes from the Intel PMB9955 baseband. Its real model should be Intel XMM7560. This is Intel's fifth generation LTE modem that supports CDMA, and it should also be Intel's first baseband with a 14nm process. What's more, Intel's baseband used to be TSMC OEM, for example, the XMM7480 (PMB9948) is TSMC's 28nm process.

Intel RF Transceiver PMB5762

The RF transceiver that also affects the signal is also Intel's hand. This chip is PMB5762. According to Intel, it can realize the downlink speed of Cat 16 and the uplink speed of Cat 15.

Multiple power management ICs: the fastest charging in history

The iPhone XS Max is the fastest charging device in Apple's history with a peak value of 20W. Its core power management IC includes Intel PMB6829, Apple 338S00456, 338S00375, Deyi SN2600 battery charger IC, STB601A0, etc.

In particular, Dialog's power management IC is available on the iPhone XS, but not on the iPhone XS Max.

New outsole sensor: no full pixel dual core focusing

The sensor parameters of iPhone XS/XS Max this year finally catch up with the mainstream of Android, the key point of Sony stack sensor disassembly: without full pixel dual core focusing, the hammer is not the vest of IMX363/345. Its unit pixel increased from 1.22 μ m to 1.4 μ m, and its unit pixel area increased by 31.7%, while the sensor size was 23.8% larger than that on the iPhone X.

In terms of focusing system, Apple has introduced phase focusing since the iPhone 6 in 2014. In 2017, the iPhone X/8/8 Plus changed the previously paired focusing pixels to be evenly tiled. This year's iPhone XS/XS Max has higher focusing pixel density and different horizontal and vertical densities (but actually the focusing speed does not change much), but there is still a gap between the density and full pixel dual core focusing. In fact, the focusing speed and weak light focusing ability of this year's iPhone are not different from those of the previous year.

Peripheral modules that people pay little attention to

  1. The iPhone XS Max disassembled this time uses Sandisk's 256GB flash memory, model SDMPEGF18;

  2. The WiFi/Bluetooth module is USI 339S00551, which may be a Broadcom WiFi Bluetooth combination SoC (if the WiFi signal is really poor, there is also its pot);

  3. The audio part is three Apple 338S00411 audio amplifiers, and Codec is Apple 338S00248;

  4. NFC controller, probably a chip with 100VB27 mark, may be produced by NXP;

  5. RF front-end part includes Avago AFEM-8092 FEM, Skyworks SKY13768 FEM, SKY85403 FEM, etc;

  6. It is rumored that LG has also become the screen supplier of Apple, but no iPhone has been adopted yet.
