Still familiar Xiaomi, detailed evaluation of Xiaomi 8
Still familiar Xiaomi, detailed evaluation of Xiaomi 8

On May 31, 2018, Xiaomi officially released its commemorative works for the 8th anniversary in Shenzhen Universiade Center - Xiaomi 8 series, including Xiaomi 8, transparent exploration version of Xiaomi 8 and Xiaomi 8 SE Love to play computer games We got the prototype of Xiaomi 8 for evaluation at the first time. As the Xiaolong 845 model with the lowest starting price in the market, what advantages does Xiaomi 8 have besides price? What are the disadvantages compared with the rivals? Let's have a look.

Specifications

As usual, let's first look at the relevant parameters of Xiaomi 8. In addition to the parameters listed in the table, by querying the hardware information of Xiaomi 8, the 128GB version of UFS is provided by Samsung, the fingerprint identification module is FPC1020 series, the audio chip is the WCD934X standard configuration of Snapdragon 845, and the infrared camera in front of Xiaomi 8 is the OV7251 provided by Howell.

Xiaomi's first "Liu Haiping"

Xiaomi 8 chose to use a special-shaped full screen on the screen, which is not only the first time Xiaomi has used the commonly known "Liu Haiping" in this series, but also the first time Xiaomi has used the entire mobile phone product line. As for the use of "Liu Haiping", President Lei said at the press conference that he would not feel ugly if he saw too much. After all, most domestic manufacturers now popularize "Liu Haiping" on their own models. If they really don't like it, Xiaomi still has a regular MIX 2S to choose from.

Although they are all "Liu Haiping", there are still differences in the border control. The border control of Xiaomi 8 is not excellent, slightly different from that of OV, and slightly thicker than the newly released one plus six. If you want to say the advantage, the screen should have a relatively high drop resistance. At the same time, because Xiaomi 8 has put more components (infrared lighting elements and infrared cameras) into the "bangs", it occupies a large space, squeezing the space of the notice board, resulting in that Xiaomi 8 WiFi、 Signal strength and power (Percentage cannot be displayed yet) Otherwise, no notification information can be displayed (Same as iPhone X) , which can be said to be very annoying.

On the back side, the design of Xiaomi 6's four curved glass+metal middle frame is followed. Because the ordinary version of Xiaomi 8 does not have offline fingerprint recognition and "Face ID", it uses the same rear fingerprint recognition as the MIX 2S. The dual camera modules are arranged vertically. These familiar elements have already appeared on the MIX 2S. What is different from the Xiaomi 8 SE on the small screen is the processing of the R angle. Xiaomi 8 and the transparent exploration version of Xiaomi 8 are known as the "perfect R angle", which is more rounded overall.

As you can see from the final results, the combination of various elements of Xiaomi 8 inevitably presents a problem in appearance: similar to Apple's iPhone X. Although there are numerous new models of "Liu Hai Ping" at present, they are more or less different from the iPhone X in the back or overall design. The Xiaomi 8 is probably the most similar model to the iPhone X, and the transparent exploration version of Xiaomi 8, which cancels the post fingerprint identification, is more similar.

Samsung AMOLED used for the first time

Because of the addition of "Liu Haiping" and fingerprint under the screen, Xiaomi8 chose the AMOLED panel provided by Samsung. List the parameters of this screen: 6.21 inch screen size, FHD+(2248x1080, 18.7:9 scale) resolution, 430 nit typical brightness (up to 600 nit), DCI-P3 color gamut, support for HDR and off screen display AOD. Basically, all the required functions are provided, but the "Never" option is canceled for screen lock time in the system, and only the maximum 10 minute setting is provided, which should be made to prevent screen burning.

The actual appearance of Xiaomi8's AMOLED screen is acceptable, close to most 1080P AMOLED screens. If you look closely, you can feel the gap with 2K AMOLED. As for strobe and details of AMOLED screen, because different people have different feelings, users who mind should make a decision after experiencing it offline. This is the current market environment. Those who do not want to accept AMOLED screens can turn around and consider the MIX 2S, HTC U12+models that still adhere to LCD screens.

According to the measured data, the Xiaomi 8's screen is slightly cold in three modes: adaptive mode 7400K, screen enhancement mode 7430K, and standard mode 6720K. For the color alignment part, compared with the "run points" mode of DCI-P3 and sRGB provided by Yijia, Xiaomi can only say that it is still the same. In the adaptive mode, the average DeltaE is 4.7 in the sRGB color gamut and 4.9 in the P3 color gamut; Screen enhancement is 3.4 under P3 color gamut; The standard mode is 3.5 in sRGB color gamut. Such color accuracy performance can't be regarded as an excellent level. It's a normal play among domestic flagship. I hope Xiaomi can make more efforts in screen color accuracy.

Although the color accuracy of the Xiaomi 8 screen is not very good, the color gamut is still normal. Thanks to the characteristics of AMOLED screen, Xiaomi 8 can cover more than 100% sRGB color gamut in adaptive mode, reaching 91% DCI-P3; 106.9% of the DCI-P3 color gamut is achieved in the screen enhancement mode, and 100% sRGB can also be covered in the standard mode. The maximum brightness can reach 406 nits manually, and 542 nits under burst mode (automatic bright light stimulation). The display area can be further reduced to 734 nits, which is slightly different from the official 600 (HBM)/430 (typ).

The highest scoring dragon 845?

There is no doubt that Xiaomi 8 will use Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 as its SoC. The memory of the ordinary version is only 6GB, and only the transparent exploration version provides 8GB. It should be a gap with the MIX 2S. Because the test machine is pre installed with the top secret version of MIUI 10, it is partially restricted. Most of the scoring software, such as GeekBench and 3DMark, cannot run normally. But according to the pi and RAR tests, Xiaomi 8's Snapdragon 845 plays normally, and does not play abnormally.

Xiaomi 8 uses Samsung's UFS 2.1 memory chip (KLUDG4U1EA), and the speed of measured data reading and writing is a winner or loser compared with other models that also use UFS. It is worth noting that Xiaomi 8 has achieved a 130MB/s write speed in random writing, which has certain advantages over most competitors.

Of course, President Lei specifically mentioned in the press conference that Xiaomi 8's Snapdragon 845 can achieve a score of 300000 points under the development version of MIUI. We also decided to try it. However, the reality is always cruel. The score of the latest version of Anthare is more than 260000, not up to the 300000 advertised in the press conference. It seems that if you want to achieve the highest score, you need to push new firmware from Xiaomi later.

With the blessing of MIUI 10 based on Android 8.1 and Snapdragon 845, the fluency of Xiaomi 8 should not be worried, and Xiaomi has also focused on improving its hand following ability. Compared with MIUI 9, MIUI 10 has made more updates on the UI. The most obvious thing is that Xiaomi's engineers are also very "honest" in the design of the multitask interface and notice bar. It's a bit hard to laugh and cry that they even kept "bangs" together in the single handed mode.

The infrared face recognition added by Xiaomi 8 is highly practical. It can unlock faces without pressure, whether in sufficient light or in the dark. Compared with the situation that friends set up light compensation at night when face unlocking, the "fringe" of Xiaomi 8 is equipped with infrared lighting and infrared camera, which is obviously more in place. Photos with higher scores than iPhone X

In the dual camera part, the hardware of Xiaomi 8 is consistent with that of MIX 2S. The combination of dual 12 million (IMX363+S5K3M3) makes DxO Mark better than that of MIX 2S because of the improvement of algorithm. So does Xiaomi 8 really deserve a high score of 105 points for taking photos?

HDR Comparison:

To sum up the photos taken by Xiaomi 8, HDR partially inherited the problem of MIX 2S that "in low light, automatic HDR will deteriorate the image". After HDR is triggered in low light scenes, tolerance is not improved, and some details will be erased if more force is applied. The white balance and saturation of Xiaomi 8 are very close to that of MIX 2S, mainly because the contrast is improved, but it is difficult to detect without contrast. Light and weak light scenes have lower exposure pressure and enhanced sharpening, but the degree is very slight. These changes have slightly improved the discrimination (Result of algorithm polishing) . Now Xiaomi has surpassed iPhone in discrimination. Many scenes can compete with Samsung's S9+, but the accuracy of metering and white balance, the effect of automatic HDR and other details need to be improved. Charging and endurance of QC4+

Xiaomi 8 is equipped with a 3400mAh battery, and the transparent exploration version of Xiaomi 8 has shrunk to 3000mAh. Maybe this is the price of loading. The battery capacity of Xiaomi 8 is the same as that of the MIX 2S, which is the average level of the current Snapdragon 845 models (except that the Black Shark game mobile phone is equipped with 4000mAh). The endurance performance should not be worried.

After our regular 2-hour endurance test (30 minutes of large-scale games, 30 minutes of wifi and 4G Internet access and 30 minutes of local video playback), Xiaomi 8 finally had 78% of its remaining power, which was the bottom of all Snapdragon 845 models. After careful comparison, it can be found that Xiaomi 8 consumes the most power in the game link, which should be related to its aggressive game scheduling, leading to increased power consumption. It is said that it is "the bottom", but it is no problem to recharge the battery life one day after normal use.

The built-in charger can achieve the highest 18W fast charge

QC4+charger can only reach 16W fast charging power

Xiaomi 8 has two major differences from the MIX 2S in terms of charging: first, it does not support wireless charging; Second, wired charging supports the latest Qualcomm QC4+fast charging (QC3.0 charger is attached by default, and QC4+needs to be purchased by yourself). Use the official charger to charge 5%~100% of the battery, and charge 23% in 15 minutes, 44% in 30 minutes, and 85% in one hour. It takes 1 hour and 41 minutes to fully charge the battery, which is 6 minutes slower than the MIX 2S with the same battery size.

By comparing the charging curve of the QC4+charger with that of the official charger, it can be seen that the use of the QC4+charger for Xiaomi 8 has not brought about speed improvement. Whether charging for a short time or a long time, QC4+has no advantages. Users who are not obsessive-compulsive disorder can directly use the official fast charging charger. There is no need to equip a separate QC4+charger for Xiaomi 8.

Compared with the Snapdragon 845, which is also equipped with fast charging, the Xiaomi 8 is the slowest of the four machines. The fastest fast charging is the one plus six with low voltage and high current Dash flash charging, but the fastest one is the Black Shark with the largest battery capacity.

tail

At the end of the process, it is necessary to consider the price since it is related to purchase. The price of Xiaomi 8 is only 2699 yuan, maintaining the consistent cost performance approach, but there is no obvious weakness in screen, performance, photography, endurance and other aspects. If you can accept the appearance of Xiaomi 8, there is no doubt that it is the most cost-effective Snapdragon 845 model, worth starting with.

It is necessary to mention the shortcomings of Xiaomi 8. There are many, such as poor appearance, lack of wireless charging, "bangs" that are eye-catching, no headphone hole, and no 8GB memory version (Please consider the transparent exploration version) Wait a minute, but please remember that this is a Snapdragon 845 model that costs less than 2700 yuan. No one is perfect and no machine is perfect. Just consider whether you can tolerate those shortcomings at this price.
