Apple's new patent exposure: iPhone is expected to use upper vein recognition

Recently, the United States Patent and Trademark Office disclosed an Apple patent, which is called "vein imaging by pulsed radiation detection". The technical principle of the patent is to detect the shape of the vein vessels under the skin through infrared ray, and then compare the previously identified images to achieve biometric recognition.

This detection system includes an infrared transmitter and a receiver. When used, the transmitter will send multiple infrared pulses to the same area of the user's body, and then the infrared will be reflected to the receiver that can sense the IR light after reaching the subcutaneous vein. After this process is completed, the system can produce the user's vein image. In addition, the technology can also depict 3D information of a part of the user's body according to the propagation time and reflection position of the ray.

Due to the existence of identical twin brothers and sisters, the current fingerprint identification technology still cannot achieve 100% accurate identification, while the security of iPhone X face recognition is worrying. Previously, users reported that their close relatives can unlock their own iPhone X. Apple said that there will not be two identical veins in the world, so it is impossible to copy 100% of the user's vein information. In addition, because infrared rays will not directly contact the skin, this identification method is more hygienic than fingerprints.

Apple applied for this patent on November 12, 2015. In addition to Apple, Samsung also applied for a patent for vein recognition. In the patent file, Samsung showed this technology on the smart watch. I wonder if Apple can use it on mobile phones. Of course, after applying for a patent, it may not become a terminal product. There have been many cases before.
