On May 10, 2018, Suning E-shop and Xiaomi held a press conference at Suning headquarters in Nanjing, bringing a new series - Red Rice selfie mobile phone S2. As a "new retail" machine built by Xiaomi for Suning, it is more significant to combine Xiaomi and Suning than the machine itself.

Back to the Hongmi S2 phone itself, the outer packaging is our familiar style. The main colors are red and white. The front is a huge model name, and the back is a list of relevant parameters. The Xiaomi product is clear at a glance.

In terms of accessories, the Hongmi S2 is the same as the current Xiaomi new model. In addition to the common charger, data cable, instruction manual and pin clip, the TPU's clear water protective sleeve is also standard. It is worth mentioning that the default charger output power is 5V/2A, and there is no indication on Xiaomi's official website that Hongmi S2 supports QC fast charging.

The platinum silver grey color matching is the black front panel, which is better in integration than the white front panel of rose gold and champagne gold, and more beautiful when the screen is turned off. The screen size is 5.99 inches, the resolution is 1440x720, and the ratio is 18:9. It does not go to the level of FHD+.

The overall shape of Hongmi S2 is almost the same as that of Xiaomi 6X, so its screen proportion is the same as that of Xiaomi 6X. The panel provided by Shenchao covers 70.8% of the NTSC color gamut on the data, and the maximum brightness reaches 450 nits. In fact, it is a little white.

I believe everyone is familiar with the shape of the back. We have seen many previous models of Xiaomi: vertical double camera with rear fingerprint. However, unlike Xiaomi 6X made of metal, Hongmi S2 uses plastic instead.

The side layout is also familiar to everyone: on one side is the combination of power key and volume key, and on the other side is the SIM card slot, which is exactly the same as Xiaomi 6X and Hongmi Note 5.

At the bottom are symmetrical speakers, microUSB interfaces and earphones. The latest USB Type-C interface is not used like the Xiaomi 6X.

The 3.5mm headphone connector and Xiaomi's traditional infrared are reserved on the top. This time, Red Rice S2 is the main camera, so the rear camera uses a combination of 12 million and 5 million. The main camera CMOS is Sony's IMX486, and the secondary camera is Samsung's s5k5e8. Officially, it is the same specification as Xiaomi 6. The front end is also clear. It is equipped with a 16 million pixel camera. The s5k3p8sp provided by CMOS for Samsung supports multiple functions such as dim light 4 in 1, AI beauty and so on.

There is nothing surprising about the configuration of Hongmi S2. The SoC is Snapdragon 625 and is equipped with a 3/4G RAM+32/64G ROM. We have already experienced this combination on Xiaomi 5X, Hongmi 5 Plus and other models. The system has been updated to the latest MIUI 9.5. Based on Android 8.1, the security patch is also very new in May.

As mentioned at the beginning, the Hongmi S2 machine itself is not very attractive, it is a familiar configuration, but the price is further lowered to 999 yuan. However, the new series launched by Hongmi S2 officially said in the press conference that S represents not only Selfie (selfie), but also "Suning E-shop". It can be said that this is an offline model tailored for Suning E-shop, and the sales channel is also limited to the official sales channels of Xiaomi and Suning. JD, which has cooperated closely in the past, has disappeared directly. In this regard, perhaps in the near future we will see the continuous expansion of Hongmi's S series, and may also see Xiaomi customizing a new series for JD, Gome and even Tmall, which is far more meaningful than a Hongmi S2.
