Apple Samsung patent war ends: Samsung wants to compensate 539 million dollars

Apple and Samsung have been fighting a patent war since 2012, and now the battle is drawing to a close. According to foreign media reports, on May 24 local time, the US federal jury ruled on Thursday that Samsung would have to pay $5325050 to the latter for infringing two iPhone practical patents, and Samsung would also have to pay $533316606 for infringing three Apple iPhone design patents. The total amount of the two fines was about $539 million (about 3.44 billion yuan).

The patent war began in 2012, when Apple accused Samsung of copying iPhone design, including patents such as bottom touch flexibility and click zoom, while Samsung accused Apple of using its wireless transmission technology without permission. Samsung was initially ruled to pay Apple $1 billion in infringement fees, but Samsung refused and continued to appeal. However, both sides settled all patent lawsuits except the United States in 2014.

At the end of 2016, the infringement was appealed to the United States Supreme Court. The United States Supreme Court ruled in December 2017 that Samsung's patent infringement only involved some parts of smart phones, and the entire device did not infringe. Therefore, the lower court needs to assess the amount of compensation in this case. So Samsung and Apple began the debate on whether the infringement was part of the parts or the whole device. Apple believed that Samsung needed to pay $1 billion, while Samsung said that $28 million was enough. Of course, Apple was close to success in the end.
