Detailed evaluation of Huawei P20 Pro, a new benchmark for next-generation mobile photography
Detailed evaluation of Huawei P20 Pro, a new benchmark for next-generation mobile photography

As the brand with the strongest independent innovation ability among domestic mobile phones, Huawei's flagship products each year affect the heartbeat of many domestic brands. In the warm spring of 2018, Huawei brought us a new flagship of the P series, but it is slightly different from the past. This time, the P series does not follow the naming rules of P9 and P10, but directly jumps to the name of P20.

The main selling point of HUAWEI P20/P20 Pro, photography, has attracted the attention of many consumers, and its Leica color matching has won the favor of many consumers. This time, the P20 with Leica dual photography and the P20 Pro with Leica triple photography both refreshed the list of the authoritative photography evaluation agency DxOMark Mobile. The former scored 102 points, and the latter scored 109 points, which is also the highest score of DxOMark Mobile since its birth. The experience we bring this time is the Leica three camera, P20 Pro, which is more concerned about.

Appearance and details

P20 Pro inherits Huawei's preferred frontal fingerprint recognition, which is one of the few full screen models that retains frontal fingerprint recognition.

Compared with Mate 10, the screen of the new P20 Pro has become a popular heterosexual full screen. This screen is a 6.1 inch OLED screen with a resolution of 2240 * 1080.

The components on the top of the screen are very compact. From left to right, there are earphones, hidden sensors and front facing cameras.

The P20 model has changed greatly, and the design language is closer to Mate series. Compared with the previous generation of products, the increase in the proportion of screens has greatly changed the front face of the whole machine.

The back of the fuselage is also made of glass. P20 Pro adopts a gradual color plating process, which makes the back more colorful and textured than the original P series.

Although the body design is relatively square, the four corners continue to be sleek. With the large arc of the four curved glass back cover, the back cover and the frame form a consistent arc design, which fits the palm of the hand.

This time, a total of four color combinations are provided: aurora, cherry pink gold, sapphire blue, and bright black. The most dazzling aurora color is what we got, which is also the most bold color combination Huawei has ever used.

As the model that dominates the DxOMARK Mobile list, Huawei P20 Pro adopts the Leica three camera design, which is the first time that Huawei mobile phones have three camera design. Leica represents its identity. Since P9, Huawei has cooperated with Leica to develop a number of products, and Leica tinting is also highly praised by users. When it comes to parameters, it is even more brutal. Its three cameras are composed of 4000+20+8 million pixels, of which 40 million are color cameras, 20 million are black and white cameras, and 8 million are triple telephotos.

System&Experience

In terms of system, the machine adopts the EMUI 8.1 system, which is customized based on Android 8.1. The overall interface continues the design style and operation logic of the EMUI. The use experience is roughly the same as that of previous generations, but some minor adjustments have been made in details.

In terms of UI, the details have been upgraded and improved, and the fineness has been improved a lot. Users can change the theme or install a third-party launcher to get their favorite style, which is also the advantage of Android's higher freedom.

In terms of memory usage, the 6GB version has about 4GB of available memory when it is turned on. In daily use, it always has about 3GB of available memory. Basically, there is no need to worry about killing the background.

Performance and running score

In terms of configuration, it adopts Kirin 970 processor. The CPU part is composed of four 2.36GHz A73+four 1.8GHz A53, and the GPU part is Mali-G72 MP12. In addition, it also adds a micro intelligent core i7 neural network processing unit dedicated to AI.

Everyone is familiar with the processor, which is basically at the same level as Mate 10. The score of GeekBench's single core is still around 1900 points, and that of its multi-core 6800 points.

In terms of graphics, the Mali-G72 MP12 of Kirin 970 has won or lost with Snapdragon 835 and Exynos8895 in most test items. GFX's performance is relatively strong, while 3DMark's performance is relatively average.

In terms of storage, read and write performance, P20 Pro performs well. It has demonstrated good strength in continuous read, random read and random write, which is also an area that Huawei series products have always been good at.

Screen quality

In terms of screen, Huawei P20 Pro uses a special-shaped full screen with a resolution of 2240 * 1080. This screen is 6.1 inch OLED material objective parameters. There are also no black spots on the P20 Pro screen. The maximum brightness is about 400 nits manually. The color temperature in bright mode is relatively high, about 7300k, slightly cold. The sRGB color gamut fully covers 100% (139.5%), the DCI-P3 color gamut is 100%, and the Adobe RGB color gamut is 90.5%. The color gamut performance is excellent.

The color temperature in standard mode is about 6500k, very close to the standard value of 6700k. SRGB color gamut is 99.5%. In terms of color accuracy, the average DeltaE of 104 colors in standard mode is 2.3, and the maximum DeltaE is 5.1. The performance is good, and the OLED screen is normal. Although OLED can not capture the hearts of all users, the quality of this screen is OK from the objective parameters, and the performance of color accuracy and gamut is impeccable.

Photo effect

In terms of hardware, its camera consists of three Leica cameras with 4000+2000+8 million pixels, of which 40 million are color cameras, 20 million are black and white cameras, and 8 million are telephotos. The specific parameters are as follows: the main camera is 40 million pixels, 1/1.73 inch CMOS (IMX600), f/1.8 aperture, and supports 960fps HD slow video; Sub camera: 20 million pixels, 1/2.78 inch, f/1.6 aperture; 8 megapixel 3x optical zoom sub camera, 1/4.4 inch, with optical anti shake, f/2.4 aperture. This is also the most brutal camera configuration on smart phones at present. The total score of DxOMARK Mobile is up to 109 points, including 114 points for taking photos and 98 points for videos, which is far away from other competitors.

Daytime scene

Local amplification

Because of the addition of intelligent AI scene recognition, P20 Pro will carry out targeted color mixing according to different scenes, because the color orientation is slightly different, but the overall white balance is accurate, but the local color, such as grass and trees, should appear more dense, some like the feeling of opening a soft mode, and the overall appearance is really pleasant. Since P20 Pro adopts the four in one pixel view mode for the main shot, the actual pixel of the photo output in the automatic mode is 10 million pixels, so the absolute detail is slightly lower than that of the 12 million pixel sensor, which is also determined by the physical law.

In terms of the performance of daytime proofs, the flagship models, especially the sensors with similar pixel levels, are difficult to draw a clear gap in the daytime proofs, P20 Pro is no exception. The samples that stimulate scene recognition in the daytime samples will make corresponding color trend adjustments, and the color of the picture will be more pleasing, especially the trees and flowers, which will be more colorful, which may also be preferred by users who like Leica color mixing. For users who like Leica's heavy hand color mixing, P20 Pro retains two color mixing modes, bright and soft, which also provides more choices for consumers who like Leica's color mixing straight out effect.

Light scene

Local amplification

As the light drops, several mobile phones finally show different performances. Exposure takes this as millet iPhone X、 Huawei P20 Pro is similar to Note8. The color temperature is also slightly different. The P20 Pro is relatively warm. The Samsung Note8 is also very similar in color temperature. The P20 Pro has a slightly better color perception. After partial magnification, P20 Pro is the cleanest picture, followed by Samsung Note8. It has a slightly grainy feel, and iPhone X has a heavier grainy feel. The image of Xiaomi MIX 2s is also very clean, with good details and sharpening, but the color performance is somewhat unnatural.

Low light scene

Local amplification

When it came to the low light scene, the gap was finally widened. P20 Pro began to show great power. Even without magnification, it could see that the purity of the picture was higher than the other three. The graininess was very light. Especially, it was the highest brightness of the overall picture among the four mobile phones, which made such purity even more valuable. After local amplification, the advantages are more obvious. Although there are slight noise, the control is far ahead of the other three. In addition to the advantages in picture purity, its performance in detail and sharpness is even more amazing. It is not exaggeration to say that P20 Pro has brought the night scene to a new height.

Automatic mode VS super night view VS iPhone X VS Samsung Note8

Top left - P20 automatic mode | bottom left - iPhone X | top right - P20 super night view | bottom right - Samsung Note8

Local amplification

If the automatic night view mode still has a contrast in the overall appearance, Huawei P20 Pro, which has opened the super night view mode, will open a greater gap in the leading edge. Under the condition that the shooting subject and the bright part are not exposed, the brightness of the dark part is also improved to the greatest extent. Even if there is no overall effect comparison of amplification, it is far away from the other two comparison models. The gap is more obvious after the dark part is enlarged. Only the small square near the lake that opens the super night view can be called "retaining the details". Although the overall outline can be seen in the automatic mode, it is still blurry, but it is still ahead of the other two comparison models.

For the super night view mode with such excellent performance, it is time to mention the micro smart core i7 again. In addition to its application in intelligent scene recognition for photography, Huawei also integrates AI into anti shake. This anti shake technology integrating optical, electronic anti shake and AI is named AIS anti shake. In the super night scene, AIS has the advantage of anti shake. In our dark light test scene, the night scene takes up to 6 seconds to shoot. We use handheld photography, and the photos are still not blurred. As we all know, it is difficult for ordinary people to keep their arms from shaking for a long time, especially for such a long exposure time, which has never been seen in smartphones in the past. Even Samsung, which is famous for its photography experience, still needs to maintain stability for a short time after triggering HDR.

Telephoto lens

In terms of telephoto, Huawei P20 Pro's solution is different from that of iPhone X and Note8. The latter two adopt the solution of wide-angle lens+telephoto lens. When shooting telephoto, they mainly rely on the telephoto lens. Huawei has previously tried color wide-angle+black and white high pixels, and the telephoto is completed through high pixels+sharpening+algorithm, which is another popular telephoto solution. This time, Huawei tried the solution of color wide-angle+telephoto lens+black and white high pixels on the P20 Pro, mixing the advantages of the two solutions, which is the origin of this P20 Pro Leica three shot.

Top left - iPhone X | Bottom left - Samsung Note8 | Top right - Huawei P20 Pro | Bottom right - Xiaomi MIX 2s

Local amplification

Although the solution seems somewhat complex, the color wide-angle+3 times telephoto+20 million black and white hybrid solution has obvious advantages in ultimate discrimination, both in detail and sharpening. In theory, the 3 times optical telephoto has advantages over the 2 times telephoto of the three comparison models. When magnified to the same size, The focus section of the P20 Pro has not been exhausted, let alone the 40 million pixel main camera and the 20 million black and white camera. However, it is worth mentioning that the white balance of the P20 Pro is different from that of the other three because of the different relationship between the 3x telephoto, the shooting range and the 2x telephoto.

Local amplification

This set of scenes also shows the problem. Whether it is the performance of words or the texture of glass walls, they are all at the level of perfection. In addition to Huawei, the Samsung Note8 is the best performer. Most of the texture has been retained, but the dark loss is relatively large. The performance of the Xiaomi MIX 2s is really a bit different from that of this class of models. Although it is the best model in the Xiaomi series in terms of photo experience and imaging effect, there is still a big gap from the top flagship's photo capability.

As the first three camera model and the first model that adopts the color wide-angle+telephoto camera+black and white high pixel hybrid telephoto scheme, there is almost no rival in this part, which also provides a good model for other mobile phone manufacturers. However, the requirements of three camera collaborative work on algorithms are also higher than those of traditional double camera, and the soft power test of manufacturers is also more demanding.

Automatic mode VS 40 million pixels VS 3x telephoto VS 5x telephoto

Since the default output of P20 Pro's automatic mode is 10 million pixels, some users may be curious about the analytical power of the 40 million pixel mode. Therefore, we conducted a comparative test on P20 Pro's automatic mode, 40 million pixel mode, 3x telephoto, and 5x telephoto.

Top left - automatic mode | bottom left - 3x telephoto | top right - 40 million pixels | bottom right - 5x telephoto

Top left - automatic mode | bottom left - 3x telephoto | top right - 40 million pixels | bottom right - 5x telephoto

Among the four modes of local amplification and contrast, the best performance is obviously the effect of triple telephoto. Although the triple proof is not a complete optical scheme according to the analysis of the pixels of three cameras, it is the shooting mode closest to the pure optical scheme in the four modes. It is the best one in terms of resolution, sharpening and imaging stability. It is worth mentioning that the 5x telephoto also has high practicability. Although the stability performance in dark light is average, it is still significantly better than the automatic mode and the 40 million pixel mode. In the first group of scenes, it even slightly outperforms the 3x telephoto. The 40 million pixel mode may be due to the small area of the unit pixel, which is slightly lower than our expectations, but the ultimate analytical power is still better than the 10 million pixel photos output by the automatic mode. However, considering the final imaging effect, we recommend to use the automatic mode and 3 times of the long focus in daily use.

The night view of Huawei P20 Pro is very amazing, especially the super night view. In addition to its outstanding night scene ability, its telephoto shooting ability also shows the ability of rolling. The ability of 3 times telephoto+20 million black and white is amazing.

Endurance/charging

In terms of endurance, the battery of P20 Pro has improved compared with P20, reaching 4000mAh, while that of the latter is 3400mAh. Compared with the previous P10 Plus of the same level, the battery of P20 Pro has also improved slightly by 3750mAh. For the current smart phones, before there is a revolutionary breakthrough in battery technology, a large capacity battery is the basic guarantee of endurance. After two hours of intensive testing, the P20 Pro has an outstanding remaining power of 82%, even slightly outperforming Note8 and iPhone 8 Plus, which is also one of the best smartphones in terms of endurance.

In terms of charging, Huawei has adopted its own high current fast charging standard instead of QC or PD standards, so we test with original chargers. In terms of charging power, its maximum power is about 18W in low battery, and the charging power is still excellent.

In terms of charging speed, its charging speed is relatively fast in the first 90%, and then slows down, reaching 90% in about 60 minutes. Then it enters trickle charging, and reaches 100% in about 48 minutes. The total charging time is about 108 minutes, which is also one of the fastest charging mobile phones at present.

summary

In general, Huawei P20 Pro is a fairly balanced model. There is not much to be picky about in terms of photographing, endurance or screen quality. Especially in the photographing part, we are deeply impressed by the stunning performance of Leica's three cameras of 40 million pixels+20 million pixels+8 million pixels, which is the first time such a powerful camera configuration has appeared on smart phones. Presumably, under the trend led by P20 Pro, smart phones will have a blowout overall improvement in photography in the second half of the year.

If you have to pick a bone in the egg, it is that the P20 Pro, as Huawei's flagship model in the first half of 2018, is slightly unsatisfactory in terms of processors. Although P10 and Mate 10 have proved that the Kirin 970 is an excellent processor, it will face strong rivals such as the Snapdragon 845 and Exynos9810 in 2018. However, it is not ruled out that Huawei has deliberately changed the update strategy of its product line to give priority to the Mate series with new processors. We also hope that Huawei can bring more powerful Mate series products in the second half of the year.

Maybe P20 Pro is not an all inclusive "three good student", but it can definitely be called an Olympian level "expert student". Its amazing photographic ability has made it a benchmark and synonym for smartphone photography, which is undoubtedly its most prominent selling point.
