With the release of Galaxy S9/S9+, Samsung also announced more technical details about it, including the new CMOS. We know that Samsung's flagship has always been equipped with Sony's version and Samsung's own version of CMOS. This time, the Galaxy S9 series is no exception. Samsung has launched a new sensor called ISOCELL Fast 2L3 for its flagship.

This CMOS chip belongs to ISOCELL Fast series, and its objective parameters are basically the same as those of S5K2L2 on Galaxy S8, with 12 million pixels and 1.4 unit pixels μ m. The sensor is 1/2.55 inch in size and supports Dual Pixel technology. The biggest improvement of ISOCELL Fast 2L3 is the addition of DRAM layer to form a structure called "3-stack". In fact, we have seen similar structures on Sony's IMX400 (used on Xperia XZ Premium).

The schematic diagram of Sony's 3-layer stacked CMOS image sensor is very similar to the sensor structure launched by Samsung this time.

As a high-speed 3-stack CMOS, ISOCELL Fast 2L3 has 2Gb LPDDR4 as the cache, which helps this sensor achieve ultra-high speed imaging and high frame video recording. Samsung claims that this CMOS can complete a full pixel imaging in 1/120 seconds, and supports 720P 960fps ultra slow video recording (this has been achieved on the Galaxy S9 series). At the same time, it also supports 3DNR noise reduction technology and real-time HDR imaging to help mobile phones complete high-quality imaging in dark light. It is reported that this sensor will also be "taken out" to other mobile phone manufacturers, and we are also looking forward to its actual imaging effect.
