We all know WiFi radio waves and light. Their essence is electromagnetic waves. Since radio can be used as a carrier to transmit data, light should also be able in theory, so there is the concept of Li fi (corresponding to replacing the first subtitle of Wi Fi with L of Light) that existed several years ago. The advantage of using light to transmit the network is that the penetration of light is not strong, and only the place where it is exposed can access the Internet. Therefore, many of these devices do not need passwords. Users can go to the range of light exposure, and they are no longer afraid of neighbors scratching the network.
On January 9, at CES 2018, the foreign company Oledcomm officially released MyLiFi, a product that transmits networks through light. Yes, MyLiFi has been made into a table lamp with a simple and beautiful appearance. It can also provide common intelligent lamp functions such as additional temperature adjustment, app control of lighting duration and so on.
As a router of the transmission network, it needs a light receiver with a USB interface to receive the network. As long as it is within the range of MyLiFi's light, it can connect to the network. MyLiFi actually uses infrared light for transmission. Our "network data" is invisible to the naked eye, and the MacBook on site can be directly connected to the Internet about 15 seconds after it is connected.
At CES 2014 four years ago, when Oledcomm demonstrated this technology, the transmission rate was only 10Mbps (1.25MB/s). Now in the laboratory, it has reached an exaggerated peak of 224Mbps (28MB/s) (infrared power should be very high), while the actual speed used was 23Mbps (2.875MB/s). The speed is actually OK, which is close to the daily 2.4G WiFi.
MyLiFi will be launched on the foreign crowdfunding website Indiegogo. The target crowdfunding amount is only 50000 dollars, but the MyLiFi lamp is selling at a sky high price of 840 dollars, about 5400 yuan. Even if crowdfunding is successful, the cost of this technology is already too high. Although the experience is OK, it is estimated that there will be no mass production machine acceptable to the public in the next few years.
