Xiaomi held a new product launch conference in Beijing on December 7. As the initiator of the full screen model, this time it brought a new full screen machine, Hongmi 5/5 Plus, which is different from the MIX series. Appearance

Both of them adopt the main color of red on the outer package, and the name of the model is printed on the top conspicuously. The bottom is the traditional white, and the relevant parameters and selling points of the machine are listed clearly.

In terms of accessories, in addition to the old data cable, charger and three pack instructions, this time the Red Rice 5/5 Plus comes with a TPU minimalist protective case (commonly known as a water jacket), while the charger is still a 5V/2A output, after all, the machine does not support fast charging.

The biggest selling point of Hongmi 5/5 Plus is that it caters to the trend of full screen, but unlike its high-end MIX series, the design of Hongmi 5/5 Plus is similar to that of many friends. The specific parameters are slightly different. Hongmi 5 is equipped with a 5.7 inch HD+(1440x720) screen, while Hongmi 5 Plus is equipped with a 5.99 inch FHD+(2160x1080) screen.

The back is a classic three-stage design. As an entry-level model, this is reasonable, but it would be better to provide an all metal body. Fortunately, the edge transition and gap control of different materials are good.

In terms of details, the Red Rice 5/5 Plus, as a close brother, is very similar, with only a small difference at the top. The arrangement of headphone holes, noise reducing microphones and infrared sensors is just opposite.

As for the other three sides, whether it is the key layout, SIM card slot or the data interface at the bottom, the two are almost identical. The data interface still uses microUSB interface, not the latest Type-C interface.

The sensor layout of the forehead is also completely consistent, with front soft light. In terms of grip, the smaller body of the Hongmi 5 has more advantages in single hand operation, but there is little difference between the two. The Hongmi 5 Plus is slightly heavier.

Practical experience

First of all, let's talk about the most interesting part of the screen. The HD+screen on Hongmi 5 is inferior to that of Hongmi 5 Plus in terms of resolution. Of course, in terms of fineness, Hongmi 5 Plus won without any doubt. However, the screen appearance of Hongmi 5 is OK, and it is acceptable without comparison.

Then there is the performance. Both of them are equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors based on the 14nm process. The Hongmi 5 Plus is the familiar Snapdragon 625, and the Hongmi 5 selects the Snapdragon 450 used by fewer models. The CPU of Snapdragon 450 and 625 are both 8-core A53 architectures, but the dominant frequency of Snapdragon 450 is limited to 1.8GHz, while that of 625 can go to 2.0GHz. The GPU is also Adreno 506.

As an aside, in the introduction of the Snapdragon 450 on Qualcomm's official website in China, the GPU model was mistakenly marked as Adreno 509, which almost made me think that the GPU of the Snapdragon 450 was better than that of the 625.

The actual score running test also proves that the two are very close. In GeekBench 4, Hongmi 5 single core 765/multi-core 3893, the image score is 2964; Red rice 5 Plus single core 863/multi-core 4182, image score 3164. GeekBench 4 also identified Snapdragon 430 as MSM8953 (the specific model of Snapdragon 625), which shows the origin of the two.

The system is equipped with MIUI 9 based on Android 7.1.2, which supports new features such as portal. Maybe because the Hongmi 5 screen has fewer pixels, it feels slightly smoother than the Hongmi 5 Plus in actual use. Through the internal hardware information query, we know that the screen of Hongmi 5 Plus is the cell screen provided by Tianma, but Hongmi 5 cannot be queried.

The CMOS query of 1.25 μ m unit pixel area mentioned by Xiaomi at the press conference shows that it is 12A10 of OV, with OV5765 as the front (the same for Hongmi 5/5 Plus).
