Part 1 Appearance and Details

Thanks for the trial and ORICO's trial. The crowdfunding version of this product is already on the way, so Bidianjun was excited to get the engineering prototype first. The packaging was skipped, and the ORICO mobile magic disk was directly pictured. In addition to a Type-C to USB-A data cable, its accessories also include a Tpye-C to RJ45 network port cable. In addition, it comes with an SD card sleeve for TF card switching. We will talk about the accessories later, and first look at the appearance and details of the host.

When I first saw ORICO mobile magic disk, I would think it is a good looking mobile hard disk or power pack. The front ABS material is made of high gloss piano baking paint, which is divided into white and black styles; The four aluminum alloy middle frames with rounded corners on the sides are also beautiful. In fact, I prefer the black one.

Three interfaces are arranged in the middle frame on one side, printed with 5V 2A, USB3.1 and WAN respectively, corresponding to USB2.0 interface, Tpye-C data/charging interface and Tpye-C network interface; There are also two indicators on the front edge of this side, one is the Wifi logo, the other is the battery logo, which shows that this guy has many uses.

An SD expansion slot is installed on the other side of the aluminum alloy middle frame, which can be inserted directly into the SD card or connected to the TF card with the built-in SD card sleeve. The TF card shown in the figure below is a Kingston 8GB Class 4 TF card for testing. The engineering prototype comes with SanDisk SD card adapter.

There is also a reset jack for resetting the network on the USB interface side, and the opening position is regular. Now I am used to USB3.1 interface, but I am not used to 2.0 interface with non blue tongue.

The round metal power switch button is placed on the other side. The visual texture is good. The edge is slightly higher than the plane of the middle frame, without sagging. The press rebound feedback is good. This button can be clicked or pressed for a long time. At ordinary times, one click can turn on the magic disk. I will test and talk about other functions at the back.

From the functional point of view, several interfaces of ORICO mobile magic disk are not simple. USB interface can be connected to storage devices such as USB flash disk and mobile hard disk lamp, and can also be used as the output port of mobile power supply to charge other devices (5V 2A); The central Type-C interface can be connected to the computer to become a mobile hard disk through its own cable, supporting 5Gbps data transmission, or the charging head and other mobile power can be connected to charge itself (the input power is also 5V 2A); The other Type-C interface is specially equipped with its own RJ45 network interface conversion cable, which is used to connect the network cable to turn the magic disk into a wireless router.

Several interfaces basically make the ORICO magic disk become a super card reader. The important thing is that this "card reader" does not need to worry about poor power supply. This is because the mobile magic disk has a built-in 8000mAh battery. In addition to the identity of the power bank, it can also ensure the portable power supply during the extended storage and the self built Wifi. From then on, there is no need to rely on the mains power during the journey.

Part 2 Connection, expansion and multi-mode

The six sides of the mobile magic disk are still not seen. This side is made of removable cover, which is also made of aluminum magnesium alloy, with some parameters and signs printed on it. The arrow with the word OPEN on the other side indicates the opening direction of the cover.

Use parallel force in this direction, push and lift the rear cover to open it easily. Pen Dianjun repeated the tests for many times, and felt that the tightness and damping were properly done, which not only ensured the tightness of the back cover after installation, but also did not make it difficult to open the cover.

The cover is a whole piece of aluminum alloy stamping, and the bayonet, outer edge and inner surface have been treated, the workmanship is good; It can be seen that the half space inside the mobile magic disk should be occupied by the batteries and circuits of the mobile power supply.

The remaining space is reserved for the magic disk to plug in 2.5 inch hard disks, which support SSDs or mechanical hard disks with a maximum capacity of 2TB. I got the standard version with a thickness of 7mm. The magic disk also supports the thick version with a maximum thickness of 9.5mm, and also has a version with a hard disk.

I happened to have a Toshiba Q200EX 240GB SSD in my hand, so I used it for testing. The 7mm thick SSD can be built into the magic disk.

The actual insertion is relatively smooth, but I feel that the SSD tail space is free after insertion. Will it fall off when moving? It is recommended to attach a cushion block here to hold the SSD or mechanical hard disk, so that you can be more confident when moving the magic disk. In addition, when installing the rear cover, the direction is suddenly forgotten. It is recommended to make a sign corresponding to the OPEN sign of the rear cover on the base to remind the direction.

After connection, I directly use the Type-C to USB3.1 cable to connect it to the USB3.1 interface (all USB3.1 Gen1) of the laptop to test its data transmission rate as a mobile hard disk. After the measured direct computer or the computer is connected through USB3.1 HUB (also ORICO's own product), the read transmission speed of Toshiba SSD is as follows, which shows that the basic quality of Magic Disk is good, and the maximum transmission speed of 5Gbps is not discounted.

It is worth mentioning that the ORICO mobile magic disk skillfully sets the power switch to a multi-function key. When the computer is accessed by default, the magic disk is input with the charging state. A short press will switch to the data transmission mode, that is, as shown in the figure above, the mobile hard disk will be changed. If you press for 3 seconds, the magic disk will switch to the Wifi mode, and the data transmission function will fail (both cannot be enabled at the same time) The wifi indicator lights in these three states will have different changes, as shown in the following figure.

In addition to the Wifi light, the power light mainly displays the percentage of power (the green light indicates sufficient power, the blue light indicates medium power, and the red light indicates low power) and the charging state (flashes when charging).

In addition, when the Wifi mode is enabled, the Wifi light will flash in red and blue for a few seconds, and will display blue when it is stable; When a device is connected to Wifi on the magic disk, the green indicator above the SD card slot will also light up (whether the card is inserted or not). However, this function is not reflected in the specification of the engineering prototype.

Part 3 Other function modes

The RJ45 Ethernet port to Tpye-C cable that comes with ORICO Mobile Magic Disk can realize the routing function of wired to wireless, which is very suitable for travel or office work. It can directly use the wired network cable to access the local router for networking.

Although we know that Magic Disk can also use APP to become a wireless relay, of course, the wired to wireless routing is faster and more reliable. Plug in and connect quickly, and other devices directly connect to Wifi in Magic Disk to connect to the Internet.

Note that in this state, the Wifi indicator turns green. In the figure below, I also inserted a Kingston USB flash disk into my magic disk, and it can be seen that after a period of testing, the magic disk's power was insufficient, so it had to be charged.

Quickly find a mobile power source (red in the figure below) to charge the magic disk; By the way, I brought a Seagate mobile hard disk to test the external magic disk. Insert the USB cable into the USB interface of the magic disk, and turn on the Wifi network, so that the mobile phone can be connected to the magic disk wifi, and the data in the Seagate mobile hard disk can be managed or accessed in real time, which is very convenient.

Part 4 One week Trial Measurement of Magic Cloud APP

Does the mobile phone read the mobile hard disk? If you put it in the past, you have to use a computer, or you have to use an OTG cable to connect to your mobile phone, and you also need to consider the power supply, or you may not be able to bring your mobile hard disk. Now, with the ORICO mobile magic disk, it is easy to plug in one network. In the bare disk box, and outside the USB flash disk/TF/SD/mobile hard disk box, it can be said that inside and outside the box, the expansion is extremely strong. However, if you want to manage these data, you need the help of Moyun APP.

In fact, as early as the beginning of September, Bi Dianjun participated in the internal test of the official APP, and made some suggestions for the functions of the APP at that time. Now, Magic Cloud has been in the internal test. After upgrading to version 1.5.2 at the end of September, the interface beauty and functional logic have been further enriched and optimized.

ORICO Magic Cloud APP has two login methods, one is general LAN login, the other is remote login as private cloud. The former can meet the requirements of LAN sharing. After the Wifi mode of magic disk is enabled, select a signal named "ORICO_xxxxxx" from a mobile phone and other devices to access the Wifi of magic disk (the initial password is 123456789), then select "LAN login" in the APP, enter the administrator account admin, and the default password is 123456789 to log in to magic disk; At this time, the hard disk inserted in the magic disk box, as well as the SD card, U disk or mobile hard disk inserted in the external interface of the magic disk, can be directly accessed through the magic cloud APP. The management and viewing of files is as convenient as local, and you can also upload, download or make backups at will. When the mobile phone storage capacity is insufficient, you can also migrate the mobile phone data to the magic disk for storage.

The new version of Magic Cloud APP has been greatly optimized and supplemented in the file management list, such as larger file/folder icons, detailed file content labeling, thumbnail display settings, multi logical sorting of file lists, etc, UI has also been greatly improved, such as viewing several icons of data according to file type, which has added a lot of vitality to the previously dull interface;

The new version also eliminates all the previously unimportant "O Home" tabs and turns them into a highly practical "Toolbox" page, which includes the one button backup function of mobile phone photo albums and address books, and the digital companion function that can assign SD to the magic disk with one button. This function can also enable other mobile phones to restore backup files with one button after connecting to the magic disk, and easily complete data migration.

The Wifi setting item is mainly used to change the password of the Wifi signal of the magic disk. It is safer after the initial 123456789 is changed. It is recommended to complete this item first, but you must remember the password. If you forget, you need to use the reset hole on the magic disk to reset the magic disk network. The "Networking Type" in the toolbox can change the status of magic disk access to the Internet, such as PPPoE mode, static IP or dynamic IP (DHCP), or change it to wireless relay. In addition, the file custom download location missing from the early magic disk has also been realized.

If you select remote login on the ORICO magic cloud login interface, you should do some initial settings according to the following steps: first connect the RJ45 adapter cable to the Internet, and then connect your mobile phone to the magic disk Wifi signal, After the APP is launched, select remote login, register an account and log in, click New Device to bind the phone, and in the future, you can use the registered account to log in to the magic disk remotely when the phone is connected to the Internet anywhere - I have my own private cloud disk.

The interface design and UI of the new version 1.5.2 Magic Cloud APP have been greatly changed. In addition to some visual effects, the previous account avatar, home page and other irrelevant and non practical functions have been deleted, which shows the practical and beneficial side of ORICO engineers; In terms of functions, this version has also reached a sufficient level of perfection. Most of the previous proposals for internal testing have been realized. As a whole, I can give Devil Cloud APP v1.5.2 excellent points. However, after testing, Bi Dianjun found that the previous feedback that he hoped to add multi selection files for touch screen swiping and fix the bugs that clicking on the magic cloud music player bar in the notice bar could not return to the magic cloud music interface had not yet been realized. He looked forward to completing it as soon as possible in the future. In addition, magic cloud would occasionally flash back bugs and hoped that the next version would be completely repaired.

Part 5 Summary

After two weeks of experience, I think the ORICO mobile magic disk is very useful.
