On October 17, 2017, Hong Kong, China - Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced that its subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies Inc. has successfully realized 5G data connection based on a 5G modem chipset for mobile terminals. Qualcomm ® snapdragon The X50 5G modem chipset realizes the gigabit rate and data connection in the 28GHz millimeter wave band, promoting the development of the new generation of cellular technology, and accelerating the provision of mobile terminals supporting the new 5G air port for consumers. In addition, Qualcomm Technologies also previewed its first 5G smartphone reference design, aiming to test and optimize the 5G technology based on the power consumption and size requirements of the phone.

Christian Amun, executive vice president and QCT president of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., said, "Based on the Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset, the world's first officially released 5G data connection in the 28GHz millimeter wave band truly demonstrates Qualcomm Technologies' leadership in the 5G field and deep accumulation in mobile connection technology. This important milestone and our 5G smart phone reference design fully demonstrate that Qualcomm Technologies is promoting the development of 5G new air ports in the mobile terminal field to improve the mobile broadband experience of global consumers. "

The 5G data connection demonstration was conducted in the Qualcomm Technologies laboratory in San Diego. The gigabit download rate is achieved by using several 100 MHz 5G carriers, and the data connection is demonstrated on the 28 GHz millimeter wave band. The 5G new air port millimeter wave is a new cutting-edge technology in the mobile field. Now it is realized through the 5G new air port standard. It is expected that it will create the next generation user experience and significantly improve the network capacity. In addition to the Snapdragon X50 5G modem chipset, the demonstration also uses SDR051 millimeter wave RF transceiver integrated circuit (IC). The demonstration uses the new 5G protocol R&D tool suite of Keysight Technologies and the UXM 5G Wireless Test Platform.

Last year, Qualcomm Technologies became the first company to release a 5G modem chipset. The ability to realize the transition from product release to functional chips within 12 months fully demonstrates that Qualcomm Technologies' leading edge in previous generations of cellular technology is now extending to 5G. Through several key contributions such as basic research and invention, 3GPP standard formulation, design of new air port prototype systems below 6 GHz and millimeter wave 5G, interoperability and OTA tests with major operators and network infrastructure manufacturers around the world, and development of integrated circuit products for mobile terminals, Qualcomm Technologies has been playing an important role in accelerating the pre commercial process of 5G new air ports in 2019.

The new 5G air port modem series of Snapdragon X50 is expected to support 5G smart phones and networks launched commercially in the first half of 2019.

Editor's comment: The X50 was actually launched in MWC2017 at the beginning of this year. At that time, the whole scheme was huge and could not be put into mobile phones. Qualcomm has been able to miniaturize the entire solution, complete the laboratory speed test, and provide a reference design for 5G smart phones in just over half a year. Of course, in addition to Qualcomm, this also means something special for the entire communications industry - after a long wait, the 5G era is really not far away from us.

What changes can the 5G mobile era bring to the communication industry and the Internet? How will it reshape our future lifestyle? I will continue to pay attention to you.
