With Intel's launch of the eighth generation Core processor, major PCs have launched products based on the eighth generation processor. As a traditional manufacturer, HP will not lag behind. The Changyou Pavilion 14 we are going to evaluate today is one of them. This machine adopts the 8550U, which is the most popular one among the eight generations of Core. Although this processor is designed for low voltage, it uses a four core eight thread design, so its performance has been greatly improved.
Appearance and details
The overall appearance design is relatively simple. Apart from the brand logo, there is not much decoration on the square fuselage, and the design is only expressed by the sense of lines of the fuselage. The machine provides silver, gold and pink color matching. Metallic silver color matching is common, which is also popular at present. The gold color matching is also quite elegant. The color number is slightly more golden than champagne gold. It looks more comfortable and has no vulgar feeling.
The A-side and C-side of the fuselage are made of aluminum alloy, while the D-side is made of aluminum magnesium alloy castings. The hardness and texture are good, the materials are solid, and the workmanship is worthy of the products of large manufacturers. The joints are tight.
Changyou 14 adopts a 14 inch 16:9 screen, with narrow borders on the left and right sides, 5.4mm wide. The width of the forehead and chin is relatively conventional, instead of the very aggressive narrow border design of XPS.
The material used for side B is relatively conventional. The frame is a black plastic engraved panel with the same color as the screen. The friction is sufficient, and the opening and closing feel is relatively solid.
The camera and microphone are located in the middle of the forehead. Compared with the XPS layout, Changyou's camera position can provide a more conventional shooting perspective.
In addition to the LOGO on side A, the words PAVILION are printed on the rotating shaft of the fuselage. It is worth mentioning that the shaft adopts escalator design, and there are few notebooks now.
After opening the notebook, the ladder shaft will turn to the bottom of the body, so there are rubber feet at the edge of the top cover.
This design can raise the rear of the machine body, so that the machine body and the keyboard can have an inclination angle. The hand position on the keyboard is more natural, and the input will be more comfortable.
The opening and closing angle is about 135 degrees, which can meet the use habits of most people. When the stepped shaft is opened, the body will be raised, the screen position will be relatively lower, and the perspective needs to be adapted.
The body is wedge-shaped, so the visual experience is thinner than the real thickness.
The keyboard adopts the common layout of the notebook at present, and the key spacing is basically the same as that of the notebook of the same size. Due to the thickness of the machine body, the key path is relatively short, so the knock feeling is hard. Especially when the machine is fast, the impact on the fingers is slightly greater. The feel performance can only be called average, but this is also a common fault of thin and light notebooks.
There is an indicator light on the mute key and the uppercase key to indicate the working status. The mute key is a red indicator light. When the mute key is pressed or the volume is adjusted to the lowest, the red indicator light will light up, which is more considerate.
The power button is located at the upper left corner of the keyboard, and there is a white indicator light in the middle of the button. Next is the sound box mesh opening extending from the left side of the body to the right side.
The B&O logo on the right indicates that the speaker is from HP and Denmark Bang&Olufsen Audio Company.
The lower left corner of the keyboard is printed with the words PAVILION, and the overall style is relatively simple.
On the right side of the bowl holder are stickers of Intel's eighth generation Core i7 and Nvidia, which also represent its most important hardware configuration - the eighth generation Core i7 processor.
The touch control panel has a smooth touch, a slender shape, and smooth sliding, but not large in area. The touch control panel has a hard touch, and the trigger is not very neat.
In terms of interfaces, two standard USB 3.0 interfaces, one USB Type-C interface, 3.5mm headphone interface and all-in-one card reader are provided on the left side of the fuselage.
The right side of the fuselage is provided with power interface, RJ45 network cable interface, HDMI interface and USB Type-C interface.
Right power socket, LED details. Few Changyou people reserve RJ45 jack. In the case of inconvenient WIFI network, you can directly use the network cable to access the Internet.

Screen quality
In terms of screen, the machine adopts a 14 inch screen with a resolution of 1080P, and the color temperature is about 6800k by default, close to the standard color temperature of 6500k, which is in a relatively suitable range. The contrast ratio is 1400:1, and the maximum brightness is about 250 nits, which is satisfactory. The performance of the color gamut is relatively poor, covering only 60% of the sRGB color gamut, which is also relatively low on laptops, so the color performance is general.
In terms of color accuracy, the average DeltaE is 6, and the highest DeltaE is 22.8. The performance is also not ideal, but it is not surprising that HP has a general quality in using screens in low-end notebooks. In general, this screen is not suitable for users with high color requirements, but it has little impact on daily office work, and the brightness performance can also meet most use scenarios.
performance testing
In terms of configuration, it adopts Intel's eighth generation Core i7-8550U, which is designed with four cores and eight threads. The basic frequency is 1.8GHz, and the highest frequency is 4.0GHz. The three-level cache is 8MB. This is also one of the strongest low-voltage processors launched by Intel in recent generations. Previous generations of equivalent products are basically designed with dual cores and four threads. Therefore, this generation of i7 has, In particular, it has great advantages in multi-core performance. In terms of GPU, it uses Nvidia 940MX with 4GB GDDR5 cache.
In terms of scoring, CINEBENCH R15 tested the CPU and scored 510cb. Compared with the i7-7500U, the processor performance improved significantly, with the latter scoring only about 340cb. The improvement was the largest among previous generations of low-voltage i7 processors. This generation of four core i7 processors is obviously worth buying. In terms of display performance, OpenGL scored 82.39fps, the Xiaomi notebook Pro using MX150 was 101.12fps, and the 940MX used by the original Xiaomi notebook Air was 54fps. 4GB cache still has some advantages, but there is still a big gap between performance and MX150.
In the test of 3D Mark, his Sky Diver score was 7639. (9799 points for Xiaomi Notebook Pro)
In 3D Mark's test, Cloud Gate scored 10240 points. (11602 points for Xiaomi Notebook Pro)
In 3D Mark's test, Fire Strike scored 2242 points. (2921 points for Xiaomi Notebook Pro; 1938 points for Xiaomi Notebook 13.3 i5-6200)
Fire Strike scored 2242 points, about 300 points higher than the Xiaomi laptop Air, which also uses 940MX but has only 1GB video memory. The improvement is still obvious, but there is a large performance gap compared with the model using MX150. It shows that the gap between generations of the core can not be bridged by video memory. The 940MX was considered to be a relatively poor configuration in the early generation of Xiaomi laptop Air, Its performance is a bit awkward, and it is also difficult to make an exception on HP Changyou. It can only be said that when running LOL level games, the independent 4GB video memory has certain advantages over the UHD620 core video with shared memory. The average frame rate will be higher, but it will be quite difficult to run real large-scale games, such as Watch Pioneer.
In the test of PCMark 8, the score of Home conventional 3.0 is 3691. (3981 points for Xiaomi Notebook Pro; 2450 points for Xiaomi Notebook 13.3 i5-6200)
The score of Work conventional 3.0 is 4940. (5032 points for Xiaomi Notebook Pro; 2917 points for Xiaomi Notebook 13.3 i5-6200)
In terms of storage performance, 477MB/s for continuous read and 200MB/s for continuous write, and 295MB/s and 24MB/s for 4K read and write. It is verified that the hard disk model is Samsung's PM871. Although it uses the M.2 interface, it actually uses the SATA channel, which is not difficult to explain the problem that its SSD score is similar to that of the SATA interface, and the gap with the PCIE channel SSD is quite obvious.
Endurance test
In terms of battery, a 3-cell 41WHr lithium-ion battery is used, which is also a more conventional configuration in lightweight notebooks of the same size. With Intel's progress in manufacturing technology, its power consumption control has been excellent, so many Windows notebooks can now have better endurance performance.
In terms of endurance, we used PCMark 8 to conduct simulation test in Home mode. The test result was 3 hours and 23 minutes, and the remaining power was about 15%. The endurance performance was moderate, on the same level as that of laptops of the same level.
summary
Changyou series is HP's first model to follow up the eighth generation of Core processors. Its market positioning is targeted at mainstream consumers, focusing on cost performance. As a new force to seize the light and thin notebook market, this machine is very suitable for its positioning. It is a metal body with just the right weight and thickness, the eighth generation i7 processor with significantly improved performance, and the decent endurance. Although it does not look very bright at first, its configuration Workmanship and positioning are relatively accurate.
However, it may be constrained by the cost, but there are also some problems that cannot be ignored. For example, the optional 940MX has more than enough than enough. For a thin and light notebook, there is not much need. In addition, there is a screen with a general color gamut. Although most people may not use this notebook to repair drawings, a wider color gamut can obviously make it have a better color performance. On the whole, there are more flaws than merits. Although there are some minor flaws, Changyou is still a competitive model at this price. It is still a recommended choice for mainstream consumers, especially office users.
