No doubt, wireless charging has existed for many years, but Apple only added this technology to the latest iPhone. The iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X are designed with a glass backplane. Users can now get rid of the shackles of cable and enjoy the convenience of wireless charging.
With the introduction of wireless charging by iPhone, a large number of wireless chargers have flooded into the market. It is difficult to know which wireless charger product has the best performance. For simple identification, we tested the wireless charging boards of three major brands with iPhone 8.
Wireless charging and iPhone 8
For each charger, we use our own wall adapter and a wall socket as our power supply. These three wireless charger products all have 7.5W output power and support the Qi standard, but the iPhone 8 currently only accepts 5W wireless charging. You will see that manufacturers are touting higher value, but the current use of a 7.5W charging board does not mean that your iPhone will charge faster than the standard wired charging.
In any case, Apple does plan to update iOS to enable the iPhone to charge at 7.5W power - so it's worth planning ahead for the future and finding out which wireless charger you want to use. Among the three wireless charging boards mentioned below, Mophie and Belkin have worked closely with Apple, but Mophie said that their wireless charger has the highest charging efficiency. Let's see which of the three wireless charger products can stand out.
Specification and performance test
Mophie Wireless Charging Board ($60)
In terms of appearance, Mophie is a round charger made of smooth rubber. A thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) coating completely covers it, so you don't have to worry about scratching or damaging the glass backplane of your iPhone when charging on this charging board. At the bottom, an LED light indicates that the device is charging. It has a volume of 0.45 × 3.82 × 3.82 inches and weighs 4.37 ounces. It is small and can be put in your bag or backpack for use on the journey.
Start charging the iPhone 8 at 2:00 p.m., and then charge it at a rate of 4% three minutes later. By 3pm, its power is 50%. By 5pm, the device's power had reached 100%, which means it took about 3 hours to complete charging. The rubber coating really prevents the device from sliding at will, so you don't have to worry about the charger itself slipping off the table.
When you use the wireless charger, it is important to pay attention to how to place the phone. Although one of the advantages of Mophie is that it is small and easy to carry, it also means that the iPhone may be disconnected because it is not placed in the correct position of the charger. However, we did not have any problems in this regard, but because the LED light is placed at the bottom of the device, it is not easy to see whether it is charging.
Mophie said that when your phone is fully charged, the fail safe circuit will be identified to prevent it from overcharging. This also means that it can control the temperature and prevent your iPhone from overheating. Even if your iPhone is equipped with a phone shell, it can be charged, as long as its thickness does not exceed 3mm, otherwise the charger may not work. However, it is compatible with any wireless charging back of Mophie.
RAVPower Alpha series fast charging wireless charging board ($42)
The RavPower fast charging wireless charging board is the smallest of the three wireless charging boards, with a volume of 3.5 × 3.5 × 0.6 inches. At the periphery, there is a silicone anti slip design to ensure that your phone will not slide. In the front, there is a multi-functional intelligent indicator light. Depending on the color, it will remind you of the current battery status - once your phone is fully charged, it will stay on for a few seconds, and then automatically turn off.
RavPower takes the least time to fill the iPhone 8. We started charging the iPhone 8 with zero power at 1:30 p.m., and by 2:40 p.m., the power reached 50%. By 4:00 p.m., the power of the device was 100%, which only took two and a half hours in total. Although this is a small detail, we also noticed that after connecting to the wireless charging board, RavPower charged the iPhone for 8 minutes, and the iPhone started, while Mophie and Belkin took 4 minutes.
Because it is very small, you must pay special attention to putting your phone in the middle of the charging board. Note that the silicone material is absolutely a magnet for dust collection, and you may find that you need to clean it frequently. But it occupies the least space on our desks and is very light. We especially like the solid feeling of USB to Micro USB cable, which should be more durable than standard cable. RavPower also provides over-current, over temperature and over-voltage protection.
Belkin BoostUp Wireless Charging Board ($60)
Speaking of design, BoostUp is larger than the other two chargers we tested - the volume is 7.5 × 1.75 × 5.5, but it can still be installed in your bag. Although the charger itself has a round design, the wall adapter is bulky and inconvenient to carry. But it can still be moved for easy storage. Similar to Mophie, Belkin BoostUp has a non slip surface at the top and bottom, and its outer side is covered with plastic.
When we use BoostUp to charge the iPhone 8, we start from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and the power goes from 0 to 50%. By 3:00 p.m., the phone was fully charged. In general, it took Belkin about 4 hours to fully charge our equipment. We really like more space to put mobile phones, so there is extra space to properly place mobile phones and charge them. The LED indicator light is also in the front position, which can be easily seen without lifting the charger or moving it.
Although its size is not too large, it is still much larger than RavPower and Mophie, which makes it more suitable for staying at home. In addition, its appearance is very smooth and looks more beautiful. Like the first two chargers we tested, Belkin has FOD foreign matter detection and a thermal protection sensor to ensure the safety of the device. But compared with Mophie and RavPower chargers, it not only takes longer to charge, but also costs more than $60. It is also more bulky - including the charging board and AC adapter - which may be a problem if you are looking for something more portable.
test result
Among all three wireless chargers, the RavPower wireless charging board is our favorite. It includes all the same functions as Mophie and Belkin, including anti-skid coating, LED indicator light, and the circuit of the fail safe device of the protection equipment. It is also the fastest charging, most portable wireless charger, and the most advantageous price is $42. Ravpower's maximum output power of 10W seems to comply with Apple's commitment to faster charging speed. At present, the iPhone 8 can only use 5W for charging, but Ravpower can also support 7.5W wireless charging after Apple has lifted the ban.
