Imagination is the world's top GPU design company, and its PowerVR series has always been the GPU for Apple's iPhone and iPad. But in April this year, Apple announced that it would develop its own GPU. Then the stock price of Imagination plummeted and was finally acquired by China's private investment fund Kaiqiao Capital on September 24 at a price of 550 million pounds (about 4.9 billion yuan).
On September 25, it was reported that Imagination low-key released the PowerVR 9-series mobile GPU, which is divided into two series: PowerVR 9XE and PowerVR 9XM, and is used for mobile phones, tablets, car entertainment systems, set-top boxes, streaming media, televisions and other devices. The new GPU focuses on the acceleration of energy efficiency ratio and neural network, and its energy efficiency ratio has increased by 70%.
Low end oriented PowerVR 9XE series has extended the new 8 pixel/clock (8PPC) core, which can support 4K/60fps, medium and high-end PowerVR 9XM series has a higher computing density (GFlops/mm2), supports 4K resolution and above, and its performance is up to 50% higher than that of the previous generation 8XEP series. They support the blocking delayed rendering (TBDR) technology, have more flexible architecture customization, reduce the bandwidth occupation and significantly improve the memory subsystem, support 32-bit addressing capability, increase the bit width of burst transmission data, improve memory access efficiency, and enhance the compression capability. The memory bandwidth can be saved by 25%.
It should be noted that the hot PowerVR GT7400 on the newly mass produced MediaTek X30 Plus@800 MHz is the product of the previous two generations of Imagination. Its performance has just caught up with the GPU of the previous generation of Qualcomm and Mali. The author is not hopeful about the new product of Imagination.
Although Kaiqiao Capital is headquartered in Silicon Valley of the United States, its main capital comes from the Chinese government, and Kaiqiao Capital has also participated in China's space program. In September 2017, Kaiqiao Capital tried to acquire Apple parts suppliers at a price of 1.3 billion dollars, but was rejected by Trump on the grounds of national security. Finally, domestic chip companies have a chance to fill the gap in GPU.
