The world's first pre installed Android O, detailed review of Sony Xperia XZ1
The world's first pre installed Android O, detailed review of Sony Xperia XZ1

Sony officially brought its flagship product in the second half of the year, Xperia XZ1&XZ1 Compact, at the IFA press conference on August 31. Together with the released XZ Premium, Sony formed its flagship family in 2017, which is quite similar to the Z5 series of that year. In addition, Sony changed its previous style and said that XZ1 will be launched in the global market one week after its release, and XZ1 Compact will also be officially launched in September. XZ1, the first machine equipped with Android O, came to us Love to play computer games Let's see where its characteristics lie.

Unified Design of Metal Wind

As Sony's flagship family in 2017, XZ1&XZ1 Compact and XZ Premium have kept the same appearance design style. The idea of Loop Surface combined with the integrated metal body has created a more integrated feeling than the previous generation XZ/XZs. If XZ Premium is the representative of the unified design of double-sided glass, then XZ1 is the embodiment of the unified design metal style. For more details, please refer to the released“ Sony Xperia XZ1 Pictures of Japanese Qingliu in the era of full screen ”。

FHD HDR screen

The biggest difference between XZ1 and XZ Premium is that it uses a 5.2 inch 1080P screen. Compared with 5.5 inch 4K, the data is much weaker. However, HDR and other technologies remain intact. Like XZ Premium, it provides professional, standard and ultra realistic display modes. In professional mode, the screen color temperature of XZ1 is 7165K, covering 87.8% of the sRGB color gamut, and the average DeltaE in terms of color accuracy is 3.3. Considering the shock that XZ Premium has brought to us, XZ1 doesn't feel as good as expected.

Switch back to the standard mode, the color temperature becomes 6514K, the color gamut exceeds 100% sRGB, and the measured coverage of Adobe RGB is 85.2%. Naturally, the color level is slightly worse, and the average DeltaE is 4.2. Although the performance of XZ1 is not as good as that of XZ Premium in terms of color accuracy, fortunately, the manual maximum brightness of 580 nits and the contrast of 1375:1 have saved some dignity. The actual appearance is good, and it feels more transparent than the screen of XZ Premium.

Fortunately, the predecessors planted trees and later generations took advantage of the cool. After XZ Premium, Galaxy S8 and LG G6 first supported HDR, XZ1 can now experience Netflix HDR support without waiting for adaptation like the previous models. The disadvantage is that domestic video manufacturers have basically not adapted to the new features of HDR.

Anticipated system/performance

Xperia XZ1, the world's first pre equipped Android O, is the only machine on the market that officially provides an official version of Oreo except for Google's own son. It sounds great, but it's actually easy to get started: compared with Sony models that have upgraded Android 7.0, there are only some UI changes such as settings, and the biggest difference is the version number (laugh). Of course, similar to the picture in picture mode and more strict permission management have been added, and the new features of Android O can be freely experienced. The new Orio pre installed in the XZ1 is proof that Google's early release of preview version from Android 7.0 has achieved some results, and manufacturers can quickly adapt new systems to machines.

In terms of configuration, XZ1 is completely consistent with XZ Premium: Snapdragon 835+4G RAM+64G ROM, Sony's second UFS model. It is not clear whether it is because of the new system. The single core score of the XZ1 is lower than that of most Snapdragon 835 machines, but the multi-core score is much higher. It is just a Sony machine after all, and it is unrealistic to expect a performance explosion.

In terms of graph score, it may be because the driver is relatively new. Basically, all the scores are a little higher than XZ Premium, but really just a little. The overall running score of XZ1 is basically the same as that of XZ Premium, which is not as good as other Snapdragon 835 models, but not inferior.

It is worth mentioning that in terms of random reading, XZ1 has almost twice the speed of XZ Premium. If it is because of the dividends brought by the new system, the speed of random reading should be improved after XZ Premium is upgraded to Oreo theoretically.

The 3D Creator promoted by Sony at the press conference is simply a 3D modeling of objects or faces directly through mobile phones. The author can only say that it is an entertainment function after experience. The scanning operation of the face and the whole head is relatively convenient, but no matter which one is scanned, it needs large movable space, and has high requirements for operation. It is easy to fail in food scanning and free scanning, and the face is also prone to deformation. I hope Sony can further optimize it in the future. By the way, I complain that using this app requires "clearance" like RPG games, otherwise food scanning and free scanning cannot be unlocked.

(A failure example)

The biggest feeling during the operation is that the Snapdragon 835 has a high processing efficiency, and the modeling can be completed soon after all scans are completed. However, the camera and the body are seriously heated. It is believed that 3D Creator has high requirements for hardware. Even if it does not seem to need hardware related to depth detection, the amount of data that can be processed is not small, and it is less likely to be transferred to low-end models.

Photographic improvement of software update

In the camera part, XZ1 and XZ Premium are the same in hardware. Both use IMX400 as the CMOS Motion Eye. The same Snapdragon 835 has a built-in ISP. The difference is naturally the software part. There is no change on the photographing interface. It is important to point out that the manual mode finally supports the independent setting of ISO and shutter speed, which can compete with the manual mode of other brands. The whole photographing experience is similar to that of XZ Premium, and the speed of focusing and image storage has been improved.

The new smile prediction photography and tracking continuous shooting are all set in the options. After testing, it can achieve up to 100 continuous shots, and then select the sample you like. These functions are believed to be available to XZ Premium after upgrading the system.

(XZ1 photo proof)

In the evaluation of XZ Premium, we have mentioned that Sony is "making a big change", has made a lot of efforts in taking photos, and has made great progress with the new sensors. Now XZ1 has been updated again in the system part. This time, let's see what changes have been made compared to XZ Premium.

In the case of sufficient light, the performance of XZ1 and XZ Premium is almost the same. There is no difference. The white balance and discrimination can be said to be the same. It seems that the new system has not been optimized for daytime.

In terms of macro performance, the two are the same, and XZ Premium is easy to automatically identify the food mode in macro scenes. The small "bug" of XZ1 has not changed. If you want to enable macro mode, please pay more attention.

XZ1's feature of highly restoring the real light scene makes it play a better role in white balance when shooting in low light, and it seems that the distortion problem of XZ Premium that has been complained about before has been slightly corrected.

This group of samples shows all the improvements of XZ1 in the night scene compared with XZ Premium. First, the picture brightness has improved, and the shooting theme is more prominent; Then there is a more accurate white balance, which can basically restore the scene at that time; Finally, the discrimination was slightly improved, but the smearing was a bit serious after magnification. In general, the software update of XZ1 this time has basically only brought about an improvement at night, and the daytime level remains unchanged. For more detailed comparison, please refer to the previous XZ Premium's Detailed evaluation as well as Photo comparison

Barely usable endurance

Xperia XZ1 is only equipped with 2700mAh battery because its thickness is relatively reduced. Although the energy consumption of the Snapdragon 835 is excellent, the actual result is not optimistic. The remaining 77% of the power after the 2-hour test is the lowest in the table for the Snapdragon 835 model, which is lower than the big brother XZ Premium. The main reason is that the power consumption of the game part is relatively serious, which consumes 12% in half an hour. If it is not a heavy player of the game, the XZ1 should not be under pressure to use normally for a whole day.

In terms of charging speed, XZ1 actually takes about 120 minutes from 5% to 100%, which is normal. But considering its small capacity, it should be said that it is slow. After all, it is equipped with Sony's Qnovo technology of "slow charging". Fortunately, the charging speed between 20% and 70% is still fast, and you can enjoy the advantage of fast charging occasionally.

tail

Sony's three flagship models this year are similar to the Z5 series of the year, offering different choices from large to small: XZ Premium, XZ1 and XZ1 Compact. The difference is that the combination of Snapdragon 835 and UFS is much better than Z5. The positioning of XZ1 is very precise: XZ1 Compact is the choice that likes small screen and flagship performance, XZ Premium is the choice that pursues the ultimate screen experience regardless of volume, and XZ1 is the representative of moderate size, feel, screen and other aspects, in other words, it is also very moderate, without its own distinctive features.

As for the question of whether it is worth buying, to paraphrase the words of the author in the XZ Premium evaluation, if you can accept the appearance of Dafa and the UXP system, they can be regarded as the most worthy Sony flagship in recent years. As for which one you want to buy, it depends on your personal preference.
