After the familiar moto released a new generation of z ² force edition overseas, it introduced a mid-range z ² play in China to see whether it can carry the banner of sales.
Appearance design
Moto z ² play uses bright red as the main color of its outer packaging, giving a young and energetic feeling, which is more consistent with the positioning of z ² play, and specifically marks the support for moto mods on the front.
The outer package of z ² play uses a pull out design, which is quite unique in today's smart phone packaging and can bring a lot of freshness to consumers. As for accessories, they are similar to the original moto machine.
Because it is compatible with various modules of the moto mods, the appearance of the Z series will not change much. We can also see the shadow of the former moto z/z force on the z ² play, which is more smooth on the whole. The metal pin points connecting the moto mods are still arranged below the back.
The most obvious positive change is that the previous generation square fingerprint identification key has been replaced by the mainstream waist circle, which is more harmonious with the body. At the same time, the fingerprint identification key can also be used as the Home key.
There are integrated sensors, earphones, cameras and dual color temperature flash lights on the top. Compared with the previous Moto machine, there are fewer openings, and the forehead looks more pleasing. The front dual color temperature flash light is also a special configuration.
The camera part with a very prominent back is also compatible with the moto mods module, so there is no way to break through the modeling of this part, but the internal components are completely different: 12 million single shots, the unit pixel area has reached 1.4 µ m, the large aperture of f/1.7, and support for dual pixel focusing. The thickness of the z ² play is not as extreme as that of the moto z before. The 3.5mm headphone interface has been successfully retained, and a USB Type-C data interface is in the middle of the bottom.

The existence of moto mods makes it difficult for Z series models to make breakthroughs in appearance design, but z ² play has made many improvements in various details, making the products more mature. Screen quality
In order to maintain the consistent extreme thickness of the Z series, the moto z ² play is equipped with a 5.5 inch 1080P Super AMOLED screen. The system provides many screen options. After setting them to standard, the measured color temperature is 7000K. Thanks to the characteristics of AMOLED, this screen covers 137.7% of the sRGB color gamut, which performs well.
The manual brightness can reach 411 nits, basically ensuring the visibility in the sun. However, the color accuracy is a bit inferior. Under the sRGB color gamut, the deltaE is slightly higher, down to 6.3, and then down to 4.9 with Adobe RGB. No matter which one is excellent. Fortunately, the actual appearance is not bad, but for users who do not like bright colors, the z ² play screen may not be very palatable.
Performance&System
In terms of performance, the positioning of z ² play determines that it will not use Snapdragon 835, the flagship processor, but moto only gives the high-frequency version of Snapdragon 626 of "God U" Snapdragon 625. The actual score test is basically at the same level as that of Snapdragon 625, with little difference. It is quite different from the more high-end Snapdragon 652, not to mention the same level as that of Snapdragon 660, which also uses the 14nm process. It can be used, thanks to the optimization of the system, and its daily use is relatively smooth, but it is difficult to face the high pressure of apps and games.
In terms of RAM and ROM storage, moto is generous. It gives a combination of 4G LPDDR3+64G eMMC, which can even match some flagship models in size. However, in today's market, this configuration has basically become the standard configuration. In the actual test, except for the extremely high speed of random writing, almost all other items are at the bottom of the same level.
In the system part, the Bank of China version of the z ² play does not adopt the original small modification method as before. Lenovo is relatively simple and rude and directly replaced with the original ZUI of its ZUK brand, so the Bank of China version of the z ² play is equipped with the ZUI 3.0 based on Android 7.1.1. Compared with the original moto system, which is a little shabby, it is more grounded to use ZUI. The functions commonly used by domestic consumers are basically provided, as well as the function of tasting new things. It is easy to get started without pressure, and the threshold for using the moto system is slightly higher than that of the original national bank system. However, it seems strange to see that the Moto model is equipped with ZUI instead of a native like interface.
In particular, the system has adapted the fingerprint identification key on the front of the z ² play and provided the U-Touch function: by performing different operations on the fingerprint identification key, the three key functions of Android, namely, returning to the home page and opening the multi task interface, can be completed. Even if the virtual key is turned off, the system can operate normally. At the same time, it also provides customization options. It can be seen that the Bank of China firmware has made great efforts, but it may be because the author has been accustomed to full virtual keys or physical touch keys, and it is not easy to operate.
Photo performance
The camera hardware of moto z ² play is quite powerful. The CMOS is Samsung's S5K2L7, and the specification parameters are basically the same as Sony's IMX362: 12 million pixels, unit pixel area of 1.4 µ m, dual pixel and laser focusing, and a large aperture of f/1.7.
The photographing interface is nothing special. It is fully functional. Manual mode, panorama, slow motion, night view, etc. are all attached, and can be used immediately. Compared with the original moto, it is more in line with the use habits of Chinese people. The focusing and imaging speed are very good in the actual photography process, and the experience is good.

In the daytime sample, compared with Meizu PRO 7 with similar price, moto z ² play is more excellent in white balance, which can restore the light changes at that time, but it is occasionally overexposed. In terms of details, the two are almost the same, and the difference in analytical power is only one millimeter. This performance is greatly improved compared with the original moto model, and photography is no longer a weakness.

In the indoor environment, the two can win or lose each other: there is almost no difference in discrimination, mainly in the white balance. Meizu PRO 7 appears slightly cold on the shelf, while the z ² play turns green on the shelf.

In this group of night scenes, the performance of the two is quite different. Thanks to the larger aperture and unit pixel area, the ISO of z ² play does not soar high enough to ensure light inflow, but the white balance is not as good as PRO 7, and the noise control is also slightly inferior.

After changing the scene, the ISO of PRO 7 was very exaggerated. Not only was it overexposed, but also the noise control was unsatisfactory. The z ² play performance was much better. The noise control was relatively excellent, and the overall white balance control was also in place. It basically restored the actual situation at that time, and the advantages of hardware were fully reflected.

In this group of samples, the white balance of PRO 7 is good. The z ² play is a bit over exposed, which makes the picture white, but it is better at discrimination. Proper sharpening allows it to provide more information. PRO 7 has no other advantages except that the white balance is slightly superior.
In general, the performance of the moto z ² play this time was a bit unexpected. The original impression of the moto photos was that we could barely see them. After the hardware upgrade, the software has also made great progress. There are advantages both in the daytime and at night. Of course, it doesn't mean that the photography of z ² play is very powerful. For example, the problem of white balance and the easy overexposure at night need to be improved. I hope that the system update in the future can continue to improve.
Endurance
The Snapdragon 626 is equipped with 3000mAh battery and AMOLED screen, so the endurance is guaranteed. This performance is better than Xiaomi 5X with Snapdragon 625 or Nut Pro with the same SoC.
