Last time, we introduced the birth and development of Qualcomm Gobi series modems. With the unification of the brand, it was officially renamed as Snapdragon X series LTE modems, opening a new chapter for Qualcomm LTE modems. Although Qualcomm's LTE modem seems to be quite mature after three generations of development, its name has been changed to Snapdragon. Up to now, there are eight products such as X5-X16 that have been shipped, and X20 and X50 are also on the way. Let's see what the number one Xiaolong X series LTE modem has achieved.
The first three carrier converged Snapdragon X10 LTE
In 2014, it was integrated on Snapdragon 808/810, and Qualcomm launched Snapdragon X10 LTE modem. Compared with previous products, Snapdragon X10 LTE has greatly improved in all aspects, and its specifications are not outdated now. In particular, the downlink has realized 3-CA carrier aggregation for the first time, and the peak value can reach 450Mbps of LTE Cat. 9. What is the concept? At present, the peak speed of 4G+of Unicom and Telecom is 300Mbps, and that of mobile is 330Mbps. Hong Kong operators adjacent to the mainland have recently upgraded to 450Mbps. In other words, Snapdragon X10 LTE modems can still cope with the network of today's operators.
Speaking of the classic model at that time, the Nexus 6P must be mentioned. It was the first time that a domestic manufacturer contracted Google for its own son model. Naturally, it was also the top configuration at that time. For some reasons, the Nexus 6P, as the son of Nexus, did not sell in China like its predecessor Nexus 6, so its network configuration did not make any preparations for the domestic market. However, with the full mode and full band support of Snapdragon X10 LTE modem, the Nexus 6P can also perfectly adapt to the networks of the three major domestic operators.
In the domestic market, Xiaomi Note's top configuration completed the first Xiaolong X10 LTE modem. As the real flagship equipment of Xiaomi in those days, the top configuration of Xiaomi Note can be said to be the ultimate - Snapdragon 810+4G RAM+64G ROM+2K screen+SABRE9018C2M audio chip, all of which are top class.
The first Snapdragon X12 LTE with uplink carrier aggregation
The Snapdragon X12 LTE accompanying the launch of Snapdragon 820/821 is also not vegetarian. First of all, although the downlink is the same as the Snapdragon X10 LTE in terms of three carrier convergence, the speed has been improved to 600Mbps of LTE Cat. 12, and it has been updated to 256-QAM from the previous generation of 64-QAM; Secondly, it realized dual carrier aggregation for the first time in the uplink, using 64-QAM coding to make the uplink speed reach 150Mbps of LTE Cat.13, which is three times higher than the previous generation's 50Mbps! With both uplink and downlink, the LTE network experience cannot be compared to the same day.
When it comes to Snapdragon X12 LTE modem, we have to mention the 820A vehicle platform launched by Qualcomm. It is the modem on the platform. Volkswagen Group has previously cooperated with QUALCOMM, using Snapdragon 602A in the MMX of 2017 Audi A5, and said that it will strengthen cooperation with QUALCOMM in subsequent models under Volkswagen, and update it to the 820A on-board platform.
As for the smart phones we are familiar with, there are many models equipped with Snapdragon X12 LTE modem, such as Samsung's S7/S7 edge, Xiaomi MIX, and Xiaomi Note 2. Moto z and LG G5 launched by Motorola are special. Both models adopt modular design, but their ideas are not similar: moto z uses magnetic interface to connect moto mods components; G5 realizes different functions by changing the "chin".
The first commercial gigabit modem Snapdragon X16 LTE
With the debut of Qualcomm's mobile platform Snapdragon 835, Snapdragon X16 LTE modem is the first commercial gigabit modem in the world. Snapdragon X16 LTE downlink achieves the peak speed of LTE Cat.16 1Gbps, or gigabit, through four carrier aggregation, 256 QAM coding and 4x4 MIMO. It can be said that with the launch of Snapdragon X16 LTE in 2016, we really entered the fourth generation mobile communication technology era in line with ITU definition. (ITU, the technical standard set by the International Telecommunication Union for 4G, is that the static transmission rate can reach 1Gbps, and the user can reach 100Mbps in high-speed mobile state.)
Of course, Intel and Samsung are not willing to lag behind. However, a year after the launch of Snapdragon X16 LTE, Qualcomm has released its second generation of gigabit modem -- Snapdragon X20 LTE. In the downlink, it uses five carrier aggregation to achieve the 1.2Gbps peak speed of LTE Cat.18, once again leading its competitors, and believes that it supports gigabit networks, It is an important cornerstone of the road to 5G.
The first 5G modem Snapdragon X50 5G
As a leader in the communications field, Qualcomm is not satisfied with the launch of Snapdragon X20 LTE. The modem Snapdragon X50, which is ready for the next generation of 5G networks, was shipped. Through years of technology accumulation, Qualcomm has successfully overcome the millimeter wave problem. The Snapdragon X50 5G can use the large bandwidth of 28GHz millimeter wave to achieve a peak downlink speed of 5Gbps, which is five times that of the commercial Snapdragon X16 LTE. It supports a download speed of up to 5 gigabits per second and an upload speed of thousands of gigabits per second. At the same time, together with LTE modems, Snapdragon can provide high-quality wireless communication experience, and Qualcomm has taken a step ahead in modems in the 5G era. It is expected that samples will be released in the second half of this year, and the first commercial products integrating Snapdragon X50 5G modems will be launched in the first half of 2018.
Final
Every upgrade of Qualcomm's modem is the basis for us to experience high-quality wireless networks. Basically, every major upgrade of LTE networks is closely related to new devices launched by Qualcomm. As an expert in the field of communications, Qualcomm has been leading the way in wireless networks. Today, as we enter the 5G era, Qualcomm has more competitors, which is a good thing for consumers. I hope that Qualcomm will continue to bring us new and better wireless network experiences in the future.
