On May 30, 2017, San Diego - Qualcomm Technologies, a subsidiary of Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM), Inc. (QTI) announced today that the company is bringing the advantages of 802.11ad Wi Fi technology to many enterprises and outdoor environments. Qualcomm Technologies' 802.11ad solution has provided multi gigabit wireless connectivity to laptops, wireless docking stations, smartphones and home networking products. Qualcomm Technologies has now expanded its 802.11ad portfolio to meet the needs of enterprises and operators to increase network capacity and deliver fixed broadband access. Qualcomm Technologies is cooperating with leading enterprise OEMs to launch access points and outdoor products supporting tri band to the market this year, including MikroTik's newly launched "Wireless Wire 60G" outdoor transparent link product.

By providing multiple gigabit rates in the 60 GHz band with less interference, 802.11ad can provide customers with a robust, economical and "invisible" alternative to fiber and cable deployment. Qualcomm Technologies' latest 802.11ad chipset combines QCA6335 baseband and QCA6310 RF transceivers to provide robust wireless connectivity for outdoor and remote deployment (up to 1km) by using up to 256 antenna units. It also brings other advantages, including advanced beam forming and beam steering features, to the highly demanding enterprise environment. By supporting strong connections, high-precision positioning and low-power CMOS design in dense environments, it meets the enterprise's demand for power over Ethernet (PoE).

Irvind Ghai, vice president of product management of Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., said, "802.11ad brings broad prospects for a wide range of consumer applications. At present, it can provide enterprises and operators with a highly stable and economical way to expand their networks indoors and outdoors. Qualcomm Technologies is working with visionary business partners like MikroTik to avoid costly fiber installations and unsightly aerial cables by leveraging the almost untapped wireless spectrum. "

In addition to outdoor deployment, tri band access points (supporting 802.11ad on the 60 GHz band and 802.11ac on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands) are also ideal for traditional enterprise level networks, because enterprises need to expand Wi Fi capacity in densely populated environments, such as conference rooms, employee workstation areas, auditoriums and public places. Qualcomm Technologies' solutions support the Fast Session Transfer (FST) feature, enabling seamless conversion to 802.11ac during roaming.

As the world's leading Internet connectivity equipment provider, Mikrotik is using Qualcomm Technologies' 802.11ad solution to support its Wireless Wire 60G Gigabit Ethernet extender, which can provide advanced connectivity between buildings up to 100 meters away.

John Tully, CEO of MikroTik, said, "Our customers require a robust campus wide connection. The unique features of 802.11ad provide a powerful and economical alternative to cable and optical fiber. Qualcomm Technologies Strong enterprise strength and industry-leading 11ad technology will help us deliver leading outdoor products with performance, simple installation and cost structure to the market. "
