GPD Pocket Evaluation Report

Shenzhen Zhongruan Yingke Technology Co., Ltd. is a company focusing on making game products. GPD is the abbreviation of GamePad Digital, which comes from the idea of the company's founder to make the first game product.

Zhongruan Yingke has released several very famous Android handheld game consoles, especially GPD XD Android handheld game consoles, and achieved the goal of 500% progress in crowdfunding on JD.

In 2016, GPD developed the latest game console GPD Win of the win 10 system, which caused a sensation and attention around the world and successfully crowdfunded overseas. In the domestic Jingdong crowdfunding platform, it even reached an astonishing 4.21 million yuan, indicating that the design and product positioning of GPD WIN are very successful. I have crowdfunded a GPD win, which has become my main office computer. It is a convenient and compact, full-featured win 10 desktop system that can work and play.

However, the GPD WIN keyboard is too small for office work and typing. In addition, when holding a meeting with leaders in the conference room, I took out a notebook with a handle, which was slightly ungraceful. So GPD Company took this opportunity to develop and crowdfunding GPD Pocket.

GPD Pocket is a pocket laptop designed for light office work. It has a full-size chocolate key keyboard and a pointer that is popular on IBM notebooks. It is very suitable for light office work in companies, outdoors, meeting rooms and coffee shops. At present, GPD Pocket has raised 7.34 million yuan in JD crowdfunding, and overseas crowdfunding has also raised 2 million dollars.

JD crowdfunding will not end until June 30. After my application, I finally got the T2 engineering test machine of GPD Pocket in advance. Now I will share my trial experience with you.

1、 Unpacking

After receiving the package from GPD Pocket, I can't wait to open it. The appearance of the GPD Pocket is still a black box, and the logo of the GPD is printed in the center of the box.

The box is magnetic top flip, which is different from the snap on cover of GPD win. The charger is placed in the upper left corner, with the logo of GPD on the charger, and the charging line is placed below. The charger and charging cable are covered with a black paper shell, and the paper shell at the charger is hollowed out, just revealing the LOGO. There is a win 10 activation code in the middle and the main character: GPD POCKET laptop on the right.

Open the paper case, and the charger and charging cable will be exposed. The charger is not small, much larger than the GPD WIN charger.

The charging cable of GPD POCKET is of dual type-C interface, and the type c interface can be free of front and back blind plug, regardless of the front and back directions.

The original charger is also the interface output of type c. It supports the PD2.0 charging protocol and can support three current and voltage outputs, namely 5V 3A, 9V 2A and 12V 2A. The maximum power can reach 24W, which ensures that the battery can still be charged while using the computer. The maximum power of GPD WIN charger is only 12.5 watts. When running complex software, it is inevitable that the power will not make ends meet.

The charger of GPD POCKET is also a type c interface output.

In addition to the power adapter and charging cable, there is a manual in the box.

The manual is made in three languages, including Japanese, English and simplified Chinese.

The manual lists the technical specifications of GPD POCKET in detail: audio support is output by HDMI or 3.5mm headphone interface; Video supports up to 4K resolution (3840 * 2160) output; Input voltage and current support 5V 3A, 9V 2A There are three specifications of 12V 2A. The power consumption is 11W, the standby power consumption is 0.36W, and the net weight of the body is about 480g.

The manual specially reminds that the original charger should be used as far as possible, otherwise the power consumption will be greater than the charging capacity.

The instruction manual also introduces the functions of each interface and component of the GPD Pocket.

2、 GPD Pocket Appearance

When you open the GPD pocket, the first thing you see is a 7-inch high-definition LCD with a resolution of 1920 * 1200 and a full-size chocolate keyboard. The keyboard is a standard qwerty layout, with most function keys. There is also a row of shortcut function keys at the top.

There is a blue pointing stick on the keyboard. This pointing stick used to be the exclusive equipment of IBM series thinkpad. It is very convenient and easy to use. It feels the same as the original IBM pointing stick. Maybe it is to consider the infringement problem, and change the color of the key cap of the pointer to blue. The advantage of installing the pointer on the GPD Pocket is that the space under the keyboard can be reduced by removing the touch pad, making the notebook more compact.

The lower front of the GPD Pocket is blank. The aluminum alloy CNC is integrally formed, simple and clean, without any interface or opening.

The main interfaces of the GPD Pocket are on the right. The heat dissipation opening is also on the right. Type c charging&data interface, micro HDMI video output interface, 35mm headphone interface, USB 3.0 interface.

This type c is not only a charging interface, but also a data interface. It supports PD2.0 charging and can input up to 12V voltage. At the same time, this type c interface can also output audio and video, as long as you buy the corresponding type c to HDM&VGA adapter. If you buy a USB hub converter that supports PD2.0, it not only supports the USB otg function, but also supports video and audio output while charging.

There is a heat dissipation air inlet above the front of the GPD pocket. The opening of the air inlet is ingeniously arranged behind the screen shaft, so that the rotation of the shaft is not affected, and the air inlet is not afraid of being blocked to affect heat dissipation.

The back of the GPD pocket is an integral aluminum alloy backplane with four rubber anti slip pads. A row of speaker holes are opened at the lower left, and GPD logo and some 3C certification marks are printed at the lower right.

GPD pocket's screen spindle is a popular sinking spindle. The sinking shaft has only two advantages: 1. It can make the screen thinner; 2. Some of the lower border of the screen can not be seen when the notebook is opened, which visually achieves the effect of narrow border. 3. The screen rotating shaft adopts the sinking design, which makes the transition between the main body and the screen smooth and natural; The wide shaft enhances the damping of opening the upper cover, avoids screen shaking, reduces the probability of shaft damage, and reduces the risk of fracture. In addition, I think the sinking shaft is really more beautiful than the overall connection.

  Use four rubber pads to raise the back of the machine. This is the maximum angle of screen opening when the A-side frame of the screen is close to the desktop.

If you continue to open the screen angle, the A-side aluminum alloy frame of the screen will flip to the bottom of the body, leaving the front two rubber pads off the table. Although we seldom use this angle, we should also pay attention to it. At this time, the A-side frame will be worn, and it will also cause greater pressure on the shaft. Long time typing is easy to damage the shaft.

The design of the sinking shaft itself is a mixed blessing. The disadvantage is that the back will be blocked due to the screen turning, so there is no way to design various interfaces, squeezing the interfaces to both sides of the body.

3、 Size comparison with GPD Win and BenQ netbooks.

I have a BenQ netbook and a crowdfunding GPD win. Just take it out and put it together for size comparison.

GPD pocket is larger than GPD win, because the screen of GPD win is 5.5 inch 1280 * 700 resolution, and the screen of GPD pocket is 7 inch 1920 * 1200 resolution. The full-size keyboard of the Gpd pocket has a very good feel. While gpd win is suitable for playing games, the keyboard is only an aid and is not suitable for typing for long office hours.

Compared with BenQ netbook, the advantages of gpd pocket are reflected. The speed is faster than BenQ netbook, and the screen resolution is also higher than BenQ netbook. Benq's resolution is 1024 * 600.

BenQ netbook is much larger than GPD pocket.

Only the right side of the gpd socket has an interface.

None of the three notebooks has any interface at the lower front.

The back of the BenQ is a removable battery, and the back of the gpd win contains all the interfaces and L1, L2, R1, R2 keys. There is no interface on the back of the Gpd pocket.

Three machines are arranged together. It is obvious that the gpd socket is the thinnest.

4、 Charging test.

Since the USB power meter on my hand only supports the access of USB type A interface, the type c interface of the original charger cannot be measured. I can only use the Aureco 5A type c charging line to measure.

My ORACO 4A4U plug can charge the gpd win when it is turned off. The maximum current can reach 2.7A. Now shut down and charge the gpd socket. The voltage is 5.34V, and the maximum current is 1.96A. It seems that the gpd socket limits the power off charging current. The maximum charging current is 2A at 5v.

The charging current is still 5.33V, 1.92A when the machine is turned on. The maximum power of conventional USB charger is 10W.  

The 24W power charging of PD2.0 can only be activated by using the original charger and the double head TYPE C charging cable.

In actual use, the gpd socket can achieve 10 hours of standby time and 7 hours of light use time. It takes less than 3 hours to charge with the original charging line. Gpd Pocket can completely go out with full power in the morning, work in the daytime, and persist in getting home at night. When I got home, I plugged in the charger, and finished the dinner at night. After finishing the dinner, the gpd socket was full of blood again.

5、 Use GPD POCKET.

After the Gpd socket is powered on, the system needs to be activated. Wait a little while. After finishing the process, you will enter the system.

After entering the system, the familiar desktop comes out. The first step is to activate the system. Input the CD KEY on the package into the system to complete the activation.

When I open my computer, the default system only has a C disk with a capacity of 128G. Due to the conversion between thousands and 1024, the actual display capacity of 128G is only 115G. Anyone who has a little knowledge of computer technology will understand why there is only 115G usable capacity. I won't repeat it here.

Right click on my computer to see the properties. The system version of GPD pocket is Windows 10 Home Edition, 64 bit operating system, the CPU is Atom x7-z8750, 8G memory, and the touch screen supports 10 touch. After entering cd key to activate, the system displays activated.

Open the disk manager. The original gpd pocket disk has three partitions: the 100 megabyte EFI system partition, the logical partition C in the middle, and the 800 megabyte recovery partition. For those of us who always work on computers, it is inconvenient to work with only one partition of C disk. So we need to partition.

Since disk C itself has been occupied by the system, we can only choose to compress the volume. 30G is enough for disk C. Compressed out 88.357G.

The compressed partition becomes gray and unassigned. At this time, logical drives can be divided. There is a 60G D disk and a 27G E disk.

Open my computer and have a look. The three partitions C, D and E are enough for everything.

6、 Simple disassembly of GPD POCKET

Why is it called simple disassembly? Because I don't completely disassemble all the components, I just open the back cover to check the workmanship of the GPD pocket.

The back cover of GPD POCKET has six cross screws, which can be unscrewed with a screwdriver.

After opening, you can clearly see the fan, cooling copper plate, circuit board and battery.

The CPU is covered with thick copper heat dissipation plate. The circuit board is neatly made, and the solder joints of each component are firm.

The heat dissipation copper plate on the CPU is led to the fan outlet.

Below the battery are keyboard, pointing stick and other data cable interfaces.

The battery capacity is 7200 mAh lithium battery.
