Four and a half months after the launch of Meilan 5, Meizu released Meilan 5s. Such an intensive and high-speed product iteration is really the only one. After the price increase of 100 yuan, there are mainly three improvements: the "return" of the metal body, the 3G starting memory, and the only 18W fast charge at this price.
Meilan 5s has not been upgraded much. It used the SoC two years ago, and its cost performance ratio is not high, so many evaluation agencies do not care about its content. But we Love to play computer games (Searching for the public account Aiganji) After all, it is an interesting evaluation organization. This article is probably the only serious evaluation of Meilan 5s. First, compare the parameters:
Machines such as the Meilan 5s are generally noticed when they receive the task of helping elders buy mobile phones, have a small budget, or need a spare tire machine. Whether you are motivated by interest or the above reasons, I hope this article can help you find the answer.
Meilan Note5, Meilan 5, Meilan 5s use MTK Boost
The "surprise" of the early spoilers here is that MTK Boost can be used in non X20/X25 models (many users should have found it early), and the old SoC like MT6753 can also be used (but MT6750 can only open 6 cores); Even though the MT6753 has a low frequency, it is helpless to have many cores. The old 28nm process of MTK will also bring a heating speed close to that of the flagship machine; Incidentally, the bright screen charging can only be about 5V/1.5A PRO 6 Plus; The charging part has a simple inventory and overview of Meizu charging head.

Appearance and workmanship
Meilan 5s packaging box Meilan 5 is almost identical. The inside is simpler and thinner than the Meilan Note series. There are detailed product information on the back. Accessories include card pick-up pin, manual, warranty, data cable, and the most important selling point this time. The model of U0920 MediaTek PE standard fast charging head is also used by Melanie X and Melanie E. It supports 5V/2A and 9V/2A outputs, with a maximum output power of 18W.
The front of the Meilan 5s is the classic shape of Meizu and most domestic mobile phones now. It has 2.5D glass+round waist home button. There is no logo at the top, but the parts are slightly higher.
The back is upgraded to an integrated metal material, with a three-stage structure. The top and bottom are made of plastic. The structure is similar to the MX5 of the year, and the joint has bright metal trimming. The machine we got is the new rose gold version of Meilan series, but the color difference of this color is more difficult to control than silver and black, and the color difference is obvious.
The top part is a 3.5mm headphone connector, and the bottom part has been greatly changed. Viewed from the front, the microphone on the left and the speaker on the right are symmetrically placed, and the opening becomes quite large, with the micro USB connector centered.
The sim card slot on the left side, all Netcom, supports two nano SIM cards, or SIM card+TF card, and the volume and power buttons on the right side, where there is also a bright groove.
The Meilan 5s uses a 5.2 inch screen. Although the frame control is general, the body is small, and the edges are round. With 2.5D glass, the grip will feel good.
In terms of workmanship, the gap and void of keys are small, the pressing feel is hard, and the feedback is clear; The sim card slot is tightly combined, and the card holder is made of metal; The home button will not make a clatter like the old Magic Blue, and the workmanship is better than expected.
Peer comparison
Meilan 5, Meilan 5s and Meilan Note5
It can be seen that these machines with a time difference of less than half a year have begun to show obvious design changes on the back cover, the body edges have become more rigid, and the back cover has begun to show a certain radian.
After upgrading the metal fuselage of the Meilan 5s, the fuselage size is slightly larger than that of the Meilan 5, but the frame thickness is close. Compared with the same door a few months ago, Meilan 5s puts the headphone connector on top, making the top opening completely symmetrical and more beautiful in design.
The side layout is similar, but the key position is slightly different.
screen
SRGB color gamut
Meilan 5s adopts 5.2 inch 720P IPS screen, The measured maximum is 451 nits, and the contrast is 1174:1. The parameters are better than those of the official standard 380 nits and 1000:1. It is also sufficient in daytime sunshine. It's just the screen with GFF fitting process, which reflects light clearly. The color temperature of the default mode is as high as 8789K, which is obviously cold. The screen can reach 97.9% of sRGB color gamut and 65.6% of NTSC color gamut.
The color accuracy test was carried out at a brightness close to 100 nits in daily use. The average deltaE of 104 colors of the machine was 4, and the maximum was 12.9. The final performance belonged to the domestic normal level. The worst color accuracy was the blue-green system, and the maximum deltaE was 12.9. For comparison, iPhone 7 is 1.6, Note5 is 1.8, S6 edge+is 2.6, and S7 edge is 2.9.
Other aspects of this screen are normal, and the drag image is not as exaggerated as other media said. It is within the normal range (Maybe it's because the flyme desktop sliding special effect will give people a serious illusion of shadow dragging?) The biggest problem is that the PPI is only 282, which does not meet the standard of eye moistening screen 300PPI (this is the "baseline" set when the iPhone 4 was released in 2010). The pixel particles can be seen slightly closer, and the fineness is tight.
system
The Meilan 5s test machine is equipped with Flyme 5.2.13 based on Android 6.0, not Flyme 6 as mentioned in the press release, nor the YunOS kernel commonly seen in the Meilan series. It is expected that the system will not be pushed until February 20, when it is launched. In addition, what's more interesting is that the previous Meilan Note5 is also the core of Android 6.0, perhaps YunOS has not updated 6.0? (Showing hands).
What we got is the high configuration Meilan 5s with 3G memory+32G storage, the actual capacity is about 29G, and the factory usable capacity is about 24G. In this version of the system, the test machine can normally be used smoothly, but the scanning before application installation is slow, and the installation and startup of applications and other parts that need performance will be difficult due to performance constraints.
For the system functions of Flyme, please refer to the evaluation before we like playing computer games Introduction to Flyme Features of How to Play with Domestic Customization System We won't go into details here.
performance
CPU computing performance
GPU performance
Flash memory read/write performance
Overview: Meilan 5s carries MediaTek MT6753, which is the one carried by Meilan Note2 released on June 2, 2015 (Coincidentally, Meilan Note2 sold for 799 yuan that year). 28nm process, the CPU part is 8-core A53, the maximum dominant frequency is 1.3G, and the CPU is T720MP3@700MHz , 3G memory of the whole system+16/32G memory.
The performance of this SoC was enough two years ago, but it is a bit tight today. In fact, especially the old 28nm process, it is impossible to control the frequency of only 1.3G 8-core 53, and daily only 4-6 A53 can reach 1.3G full frequency, or run in the form of eight core 1.1G. The actual performance is not even up to everyone's expectations for the number and frequency of this core.
Its actual CPU performance is even worse than that of the MT6750's Magic Blue 3s (4 * 1.0G+4 * 1.5G A53) The magic blue X and X20's red rice Note4, the gap is very, very large. Even if we put old models such as Hongmi 3 (Snapdragon 616), Meilan (MT6732, 4-core 1.5G A53) and Xiaomi 2s (Snapdragon 600, 4-core 1.7G) together, the CPU performance of Meilan 5s is not outstanding.
If you can't help it, it is recommended that the player user force the maximum frequency of 8 cores to be fully opened after root, or manually handle it through MTK Boost (reset every time the screen is locked).
photograph
Meilan 5s is equipped with a front 5 million+13 million pixel rear camera. The rear camera supports phase focusing. The aperture is f/2.2. The lens has an anti fingerprint optical coating. The sensor model is unknown, but it is likely to be an OV work. In terms of photo experience, because the system is not Flyme6 as mentioned in the press conference, the experience and imaging part is only for reference. However, considering that Xiaomi and Meizu didn't attach much importance to the photos taken by the 1000 yuan machine first, the performance of the mass production version is not expected to be much better than that of the test machine
The interface of Meilan 5s camera is the same as that of its own Meizu Flyme 5 machine. There is no automatic HDR and no slider that can quickly adjust the exposure. The daytime focusing speed and focusing rate are normal, which is slightly faster than the flagship without phase focusing a few years ago. The pre focusing is not very active, and it is one shot slower than the flagship in service. The overall imaging and HDR speed performance is close to the MB 5 of the MT6750, slightly less than MB Note 5, and the imaging speed is in line. However, there was no delay in the viewfinder after the light became weak, and there was no problem of black. But after all, there is no optical anti shake, ISP performance is tight, and it is easy to paste films manually, Low film rate, Slow multi frame synthesis and noise reduction smearing 。
Left automatic mode, right HDR (there are obvious exposure changes and ghosts, especially the cars in the lower right corner of the sample)
Left automatic mode, right HDR
Meilan 5s is equipped with Meizu's classic large wide-angle lens. The field of vision is one circle larger than that of normal mobile phones. In addition, the "tolerance" of large wide-angle camera to jitter is also higher, but as a price, the discrimination will be sacrificed (similarly, the number of pixels shared by the scene has decreased). The lens quality and glare control are OK, but the optical axis of the engineering machine we got is not right, and there is a fixed virtual focus area on the left side of the picture. The last one with similar problems is Red Rice 2 at the beginning of 2015. I hope there will be no similar problems in the mass production machine. The following analysis is carried out in the part without virtual focus.
Meilan 5s metering tends to be slightly darker, and manual metering has a high probability of being brighter. Therefore, it is not recommended to manually click the screen for metering in normal use. The actual imaging quality, consistent with the price, belongs to the lowest end of the active service: the tolerance performance is normal, HDR availability is not high, and there is a tendency of high probability of overexposure. However, on the 1000 yuan computer, HDR's purpose is not to restore reality, but to show bright and dark details as much as possible, which is a very reasonable choice; The color saturation is normal, and even in weak light, there is no obvious problem of saturation reduction.
Its main problems are discrimination and noise control. Even in the daytime, there will be a certain amount of basic noise. When the light weakens, it will automatically trigger noise reduction, which can wipe the noise clean, but the edge of the object is also erased, giving people the illusion of not focusing. If the overall appearance of daytime imaging on a normal 1080P display is good, the edges of objects can be seen to be blurred even without magnification under light and weak light.
The overall imaging level is close to that of domestic flagship brands such as Xiaomi 2 4 years ago, and the analytical power is even weaker, but focusing and color saturation are dominant. Scanning the QR code will be faster than the machine in those days (after all, it has phase focusing), so it is a bit difficult to record life. Of course, after all, it is the lowest positioning machine of Meizu, and we can't ask too much.
Endurance
Meilan 5s is equipped with 3000mAh batteries. After 30 minutes of large-scale games (NBA 2K15), 30 minutes of wifi and 4G Internet access, 1 hour of music playing and 30 minutes of local video playing, after a total of 3 hours of endurance testing, the remaining power is 69%.
There is a clear gap between the battery capacity of Meilan 5s and that of modern 1000 yuan machines with 4000mAh batteries. In addition, it may be that the engineering machine system has not been optimized well. Even if there is only three and a half hours of medium and high intensity testing, Meilan 5s has a power gap of up to 9% with the previous Meilan and Meilan Note series products, which is a huge difference. If the test intensity continues to increase, the gap will be even greater.
charge
Charging is the main selling point of Meilan 5s. As of February 19, it is unknown whether the basic version of 799 yuan is equipped with the 5V/2A charging head as described by the network. The high configuration version with a price of 999 yuan is equipped with an 18W fast charging head. The model UP0920 is the same as Meilan X and Meilan E. It supports the PE fast charging standard of MediaTek, with a maximum output of 9V/2A, but is not compatible with Qualcomm QC standards. Incompatible models can only be charged with a maximum output of 5V/2A. However, the measured one plus three, Xiaomi Note and Samsung Note 5 can only output 5V/1.5A.
Here is the statistics of Meizu's charging head. Although Meizu's charging has always been "violent", the 24W fast charging is just like "ordinary food".
Meizu charging head in recent years
However, for reasons such as "hostility with Qualcomm" and cost saving, the UP1220 charging head of the PRO5 and MX6 has not changed its model, but has castrated its support for Qualcomm QC standards. Recently, the PRO 6 Plus was also castrated from UP0830 to UP0830S. The castration also supports the Qualcomm QC standard, but this time the model name was changed. After that, Meizu will probably not launch a charging head that supports the QC standard. It's a pity to think about it.
At 8% power, the power is about 13.5W
At 77% power, the power is still about 13.5W
In the actual charging test, even if Meilan 5s has only 8% of electricity, the charging power is only 9.4V/1.4A (13.5W).
The potential of the 18W fast charging head has not been fully realized, but the charging speed has been significantly improved. Charging from 5% to 100%: Charge to 25% in 15 minutes Charge to 48% in 30 minutes Charge to 70% in 45 minutes Charge to 84% in one hour, Charging to 90% takes 1 hour and 10 minutes. What's more special is that the charging is slower from about 80%, and the trickle charging after that is longer. It takes 1 hour and 50 minutes to fully charge. The charging speed at low battery level is satisfactory, which is close to the mainstream flagship of non Meizu/LeEco/Moto series.
summary
However, the actual performance of Meilan 5s was basically in line with expectations. In addition to the fact that the CPU performance did not increase but decreased, compared with the beginning, there were three major improvements after the price increase of 100 yuan:
Different people have different opinions on the appearance of the metal body, but the durability will certainly be improved;
The memory at the beginning of 3G is obviously more abundant than that of previous models, and it is not difficult to switch with large games hanging in the background;
The core selling point of 18W fast charging, even though it does not reach the nominal power, its charging speed is far away from competitors of the same level. However, the endurance is still hampered by the smaller battery and the old SoC.
In the field of 1000 yuan machines, the law of "one penny for one thing" will become more and more obvious. Because of the control of costs, their parts will be the latest batch to be upgraded, and their performances are basically similar to those of flagship models several years ago. Conventional "screen, performance, system, photography, endurance, charging and heating" projects. According to the development degree of the supply chain, the most unlikely thing to go wrong with a thousand yuan machine is the screen and endurance, because the SoC itself is not high in performance, and heating is rarely a problem. The most concessions must be the performance and photography that require the most cost.
The current Meilan and Hongmi have both reached the starting price of 799 yuan, which makes their positioning very awkward (especially the high-end version). After an increase of 200 yuan, 999 yuan would have been able to buy Meilan Note5 and Hongmi Note4, whose performance and photography have been greatly improved.
Of course, the reference logic of the machines at this price is totally different. They are only used to replace Nokia's original ones. Their main purpose is to talk on the phone and receive messages. WeChat is not too hard. If the budget is stuck here, and you don't want to buy/can't easily buy Korean version of American version of "foreign garbage" and outdated flagship (such as Xiaomi 4c), what about the choice of Meilan 5s and Hongmi 4? The author's answer will be: go to any movie you like.
