Huawei released the Mate 9 series in November 2016. As the first mass production flagship machine to use the latest ARM Cortex-A73 architecture, the Mate 9 series has taken advantage of time. The mass production machine of Snapdragon 835 will not be seen with us until March to April 2017 at the earliest. During this period, the Mate 9 equipped with Kirin 960 is a worthy Android performance machine. Of course, performance alone is not enough. Especially in the eyes of non game users, they are not particularly concerned about performance. After all, most smart phones are smooth enough.
Specifications
In terms of configuration, Huawei Mate 9 Pro is basically the same as Mate 9 except for the screen. Mate 9 Pro uses a 5.5 inch 2K AMOLED screen, SoC is Kirin 960 (4 * Cortex A73 2.4GHz+4 * Cortex A53 1.8GHz, Mali G71 MP8), 4/6GB RAM+64/128GB ROM, rear camera is 20 million pixels (IMX350)+12 million pixels (IMX286) F2.2 supports optical anti shake, and is equipped with a laser focusing module, front of which is 8 million pixels (F1.9) The battery capacity is 4000mAh, which supports Huawei Super Charge fast charging, is equipped with a front-end fingerprint identification module, is equipped with Huawei EMUI 5.0 (Android 7.0), and supports dual card dual standby+full network communication.
appearance
Mate 9 Pro adopts a double curved surface design with both sides, but unlike Note 7, which is a symmetrical hyperboloid, the curvature of the screen edge of Mate 9 Pro is smaller than that of the back, so Mate 9 Pro is not a hyperboloid symmetrical design. The back of the gold version Mate 9 Pro adopts the metal drawing process that is almost the same as the gold version P9. The metal surface is coated, which has a good texture and grip. The metal partition strip on the back adopts the injection molding process. The partition strip is smoothly connected with the back plate of the metal drawing process, that is, the fingernail is used to rub back and forth between the partition strip and the back plate of the wire drawing process, It will not feel abrupt.
The edges and corners of the metal middle frame of Mate 9 Pro are used for transition cutting, which is different from the CNC cutting process used on many thousand yuan machines. A closer look shows that the cutting edges of Mate 9 Pro are sanded, which does not cut hands and is not easy to scratch.
The Home key of Mate 9 Pro cannot be pressed
The standard charging head of Huawei Mate 9 Pro supports Huawei SuperCharge fast charging, which is not our common QC/PD/PE fast charging. Its output specifications are 5V/2A, 4.5V/5A and 5V/4.5A. In addition to the data cable and charging head, the Mate 9 Pro is also equipped with a Micro USB to Type-C converter.
system
Mate 9 Pro uses EMUI 5.0 (Android 7.0). The system has a secondary menu, and the lock screen wallpaper will automatically switch. The built-in system UI of EMUI 5.0 still maintains Huawei's business oriented style. With the support of Kirin 960, the whole system is also very smooth. In fact, in the generation of EMUI 5.0, the use logic of the system is not very different from that of mobile phones on the market. Even if you used other brands of mobile phones before, you can easily use EMUI 5.0.

performance
From the score data, the Mate 9 Pro with Kirin 960 is really strong. The CPU performance of the single core is only behind that of the iPhone 7 Plus, and the RAR and Pi scores are also very close to the first place S7 edge. In terms of GPU, the Kirin 960 has greatly improved over the previous generation, finally reaching the level of the flagship GPU, and its GFXBench score is close to that of the Snapdragon 820. Its read-write performance is much better than that of other Android flagship (iPhone 7 Plus does not have this scoring software, so it does not add iPhone 7 Plus as a comparison).
Average frames of rapids and crash 3
In terms of actual games, the frame numbers of Mate 9 Pro and Pixel XL are relatively close, and Mate 9 Pro is slightly behind, which is also consistent with the theoretical results of our GFXBench test. We don't know why the S7 edge's performance is so low here. Our S7 edge is tested under the condition of high power and no heat. It may be related to the upgrade of the new system version of the S7 edge. The iPhone 7 Plus is the highest level in both theoretical scores and actual tests.
It is worth mentioning that the Mate 9 Pro, Pixel XL and S7 edge all have a 2K resolution, while the iPhone 7 Plus has a 1080P resolution.

Mate 9 series smart phones are Huawei's flagship models launched at the end of 2016, equipped with a new generation of Kirin 960SoC, 12 million pixels (IMX286)+20 million pixels (IMX350) dual camera configuration, and also equipped with optical anti shake, which can be said to be a national flagship with considerable attention. Mate 9 series adopts a dual camera scheme different from the previous generation P9. Although the main camera is still an IMX286 with 12 million pixels, the black and white camera has been upgraded to 20 million pixels. Through 20 million pixels of black and white camera stroke+12 million pixels of color filling, a 2x algorithm zoom close to the optical zoom effect has been achieved. Mobile phones are limited by their size and cannot use the same high specification CMOS as high-end cards and micro phones. Fortunately, smart phones have strong processing chips, and manufacturers can also improve the imaging quality through continuous improvement of algorithms. That is why smart phones are now small and big, and some high-end flagship phones have been able to own such cards Even the imaging level of high-end card machines.
The entire Mate 9 series, including Mate 9, Mate 9 Pro, and Mate 9 Porsche designs, all use the same camera specifications. We use Mate 9 Pro in this evaluation, compared with the flagship Galaxy S7 edge iPhone 7 Plus、Pixel XL。 It can be seen that these four photography flagship ships all adopt the same 12 million main cameras, but they are all sensors of different models. Although the Pixel XL has the largest pixel size, it is optically anti shake. Although the Mate 9 Pro does not have an advantage in unit pixel size and aperture, the only one uses dual cameras.

I believe that many people who pay attention to Mate 9 Pro are as curious as we are about its double algorithm zoom, but there is no harm without comparison. Therefore, we will certainly add the iPhone 7 Plus, which uses a telephoto lens to realize optical double zoom, to compare with it. In the first group of samples, we can see that the resolution of Huawei Mate 9 Pro's double zoom is much better than the straight out effect of 20 million pixels. In addition, under the condition of double zoom, the analytical power of Mate 9 Pro is not as good as the telephoto effect of iPhone 7 Plus. It can be seen that the background noise of the telephoto lens of iPhone 7 Plus is more than that of Mate 9 Pro.

However, in the case of low light at night, the telephoto effect of the iPhone 7 Plus and the double zoom effect of the Mate 9 Pro are not as friendly as in the daytime, and the two do not have a big gap with the proof of the main camera.
Mate 9 Pro The dual focus zoom scheme of black and white+color is adopted. Regardless of the light intensity, the analytical power of the 2x zoom is better than that of the 20 million pixels. Although excessive sharpening will lead to white edges on the font edges, except for the strong light scenes, which cannot be compared with the iPhone telephoto lens, the analytical power of most scenes after zooming is higher than that of the iPhone telephoto lens, with high availability.

In terms of daytime photography, there is not much difference between the four mobile phones. The main difference between them is still in some sharpening and smearing. For example, in this group of daytime proofs, when we zoom to 500%, we can see that the background of Pixel XL is not pure enough, and Mate 9 Pro is the most serious one among the four mobile phones that has lost font details. On the contrary, Mate 9 Pro has the most pure background.

In this group of samples, we can see that after 300% of the exhibition, the font details of Mate 9 Pro are lost. Although Pixel XL has the best interpretation, the background is not pure enough.

In the daytime, if it is not magnified many times, the effect of four mobile phones is actually not different. It can only be said that after HDR+is turned on, Pixel XL has a high degree of saturation, tolerance and color, but the light measurement is darker, so even in the same daytime scene, Pixel XL's samples will be darker. Pixel XL's samples pay more attention to sharpening and strong resolution, but they do have more noise than the other three; Mate 9 Pro focuses on smudging, with less noise than the other three, but it weakens the resolution; The performance of iPhone 7 Plus and S7 edge is relatively balanced.

At present, the weak light photography is still the weak light photography of smart phones. We have previously conducted several photo evaluations on the iPhone 7 Plus, S7 edge, and Pixel XL. This time, we added Mate 9 Pro to compare with the three international flagship phones. From the perspective of effect, Pixel XL is quite different from the four flagship models. Even if we turn on HDR+in the whole process, it still has many weak light and noise points, and the picture is not pure enough, but its tolerance and analytical power are unquestionable. We are glad to see that the flagship of Huawei has finally made great progress in photographing. In the case of ultra weak light, its noise control and image purity are not significantly different from those of several international flagship. The main problem is that the light measurement is slightly bright, the image contrast is lower than other machines, and the noise reduction and painting efforts are heavy, which will erase some details.
In terms of functionality, Mate 9 Pro not only has 2x algorithm zoom and dual camera virtualization, but also its black and white mode, super night view, Leica filter, etc. are very interesting. At this stage, mobile phone photography is indeed approaching the bottleneck, and manufacturers are trying to attract users' attention by increasing the playing methods and diversity of photography. Huawei's practice of "algorithmic lossless" zoom with dual photography is commendable, but unfortunately its performance in weak light will be weaker.
Last year, Mate 8 failed to catch up with Leica's dual camera due to its untimely life. This year, Mate 9 fully integrates the dual camera virtualization and "lossless zoom" functions. At the same time, its main camera's own photographic quality can also achieve basically satisfactory results. Previously, we said that algorithm is an easily ignored factor in mobile phone photography. There are some mobile phones with the same CMOS sensor on the market, but their imaging effects can be very different, which is caused by the algorithm. We can clearly see that although Huawei's efforts in photography algorithms are still not perfect, they are indeed significant progress compared with the previous ones. The Mate 9 series is a photographic breakthrough in Huawei's mobile phone history.
Charging&endurance
In terms of charging, although the battery capacity of Huawei Mate 9 Pro is the largest among the four mobile phones (4000mAh), from the actual test data, Before the battery reaches 90%, the fastest charging speed is Huawei Mate 9 Pro. Its trickle charging is very slow, so the Mate 9 Pro is also the slowest phone to fully charge 100% battery. Since the iPhone 7 Plus supports up to 10W iPad fast charging head, we use the iPad fast charging head here to charge the 7 Plus. The performance of the iPhone 7 Plus is surprising. It can charge 41% in 30 minutes with 10W fast charging plus. It is worth mentioning that the charging power of the 7 Plus can also reach the level of 7~8W if the QC2.0 fast charging head+original data cable is used. Pixel XL performs well, The charging speed of the S7 edge is even lower than that of the 7 Plus when the battery is low, but it is the fastest one among the four mobile phones to charge the battery to 100%.
In terms of endurance, these four flagship mobile phones just formed two echelons. The endurance level of the S7 edge (8890) and Huawei Mate 9 Pro is close, and both are about 9% ahead of the iPhone 7 Plus and Pixel XL. Since we use a medium to high intensity endurance test, the phone still has a lot of power left after a round of test. However, if the battery is 0 during the cycle test, the gap between them will be larger.
summary
Huawei Mate 9 Pro is indeed an Android king with balanced performance in all aspects. It makes up for the shortcomings of the previous generation Mate 8 in terms of appearance, screen and performance. Compared with Mate 8, Mate 9 Pro is hard to find fault with. The Mate 9 series (including Pro) has made remarkable progress in photographing this time, further narrowing the gap with the international flagship, which is worthy of recognition. With the blessing of Kirin 960, the Mate 9 series can easily control the 2K screen, and its endurance performance is also one of the highlights. If you want to talk about the shortcomings of Mate 9 Pro, it probably lacks the Hi Fi of independent DAC, the curved screen is not curved enough, and its relatively high price.
