Paradoxical, Xperia X Performance evaluation
Paradoxical, Xperia X Performance evaluation

For Sony, its smartphones have ushered in a new generation. This year, the focus has shifted from the former flagship representative Xperia Z to the new Xperia X series. Sony said that its smart phone has a new vision, and it has reviewed some design details to bring new vitality to the brand. So has Sony made the right choice, and is Xperia X Performance attractive enough?

appearance

In today's situation that everyone has the same appearance, Sony's smart phones are still so unique. The square shape and simple lines, for example, are like Volvo in smart phones. Unlike Xperia Z5, which relies on glass materials, this time Xperia X Performance tries new materials and uses a very beautiful aluminum alloy brushed backplane. It looks very good, satisfying the visual enjoyment, but actually feels a little undervalued. This metal backplane is a little thin, not as thick as expected.

The glass with the smooth edge of Xperia X Performance and a ring of unbroken metal like plastic middle frame are very close to a beautiful and flawless mobile phone. Of course, openings like earphones can't be removed. As a flagship configuration, Xperia X Performance supports IP68 waterproof, which is not missed. It is worth pointing out that Xperia X Performance sold in the United States lacks fingerprint recognition. The power button on the side is just a power button, and there is no fingerprint recognition on the international version. As a flagship mobile phone in 2016, it does not provide fingerprint recognition, which is a joke.

screen

When you look closely at the detailed parameters of Xperia X Performance, you will surely notice its 5-inch 1920x1080 screen. Yes, this screen is smaller than the 5.2 inch screen of Xperia Z5, and it is the smallest compared with the flagship models of other manufacturers in 2016.

This time, Sony's Triluminos technology has made great contributions, improving the sharpness and saturation just like the image enhancement mode. Compared with the iPhone 6s, the brightness of this screen is also good, but the color is not accurate in normal mode. To be honest, this screen is well behaved. It is neither super high resolution nor accurate in color restoration. The remaining advantages are high brightness and occasionally amazing.

User interface and functions

Sony customized Android is still the same, quite close to native, of course, we are not using Nexus, so some modified icons, as well as Sony's media, health, PlayStation and other home applications are attached to the system. In addition to the colorful new icons in the system settings, everything is as you are familiar with - there is no need to waste time to re learn the layout of Android. In order to highlight the quick start of the camera, Sony users can use the camera button to activate or quickly double-click the power button (Android native support). Ironically, the latter method is more convenient in actual use. Although it sounds that the functions are a little weak, in fact, all the functions are hidden and can be opened when necessary. With a bunch of customized themes in Xperia, users who want to make trouble always have a place to release their energy.

performance

Like other Android periods in 2016, Xperia X Performance is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, which changes the shortcomings of last year's Snapdragon 810. It can be said that Sony's choice is politically correct. However, in terms of the most intense RAM, other products are basically 4GB based, and Sony only provides 3GB, so there is no need to explain so much, which makes people feel that they are cutting corners.

As for the performance test, it is a normal performance of Snapdragon 820. Some results are slightly better, but there is no surprise. In actual operation, the smoothness of this configuration is guaranteed, but occasionally sliding lags, which is somewhat frustrating. The real problem is that the mobile phone is overheated. After only one minute of standard 1080P video and one minute of 60fps 1080P video are shot, some advanced features of the camera are turned off due to overheating, which inevitably makes people worry about its performance.

camera

In theory, the photographic performance of Xperia X Performance should be good. The 23 million 1/2.3 inch Exmor RS CMOS provides powerful hardware. However, like Xperia Z5, we are disappointed with the performance of its camera.

The "Advanced Automatic" mode should be the most widely used mode by users. It can quickly start recording moments. Although there is no large number of option settings, the main functions are not missing, such as providing automatic tracking of shooting subjects. The manual mode has better flexibility. It supports setting white balance, exposure, ISO, etc., but you need to set them to 8 million pixels. You can't use 23 million pixels.

(Some live photos and night scenes are unfortunately missing)

Xperia X Performance has high pixels. Yes, that's all. Automatic mode strives to maintain that exposure looks accurate, and even in very bright environments they can present bold, colorful proofs. When it is magnified to 100%, the noise is obvious and the image seems to be painted, which disappoints us. The focusing speed of Xperia X Performance is good, but Sony's adjustment this time is more focused on focusing, which is a bit too radical. Instead, it makes the sample appear out of focus.

P.S. More photos can be viewed at phonearena.

Endurance

Sony claims that the endurance of Xperia X series is a selling point other than cameras. It claims that it has intelligent battery management and adaptive charging technology, which can achieve the level of charging every two days. The battery of Xperia X Performance is 2700mAh, a little smaller than that of Samsung Galaxy S7. In the actual test, it has just exceeded 6 hours of screen lighting time. With this performance, do users need to be very conservative in using it for two days of life? It really needs a long life. Sony has two power-saving modes: Stamina and Ultra Stamina.

Perhaps the most regrettable thing is its non replaceable battery. Although it has fast charging, the actual charging time is nearly 50% longer than that of the Samsung Galaxy S7, and the performance of the smaller Xperia X Performance is really bad.

summary

With a list price of $700, it proves that the Xperia X Performance is a new flagship model in Sony's mind, but it does not meet our expectations. If the price is $550 or $600, we may look at it differently. We can forgive its lack of 4K video and only 3GB RAM. After all, it provides a cheaper model to replace the Samsung Galaxy S7. In fact, their prices are similar, but their levels are not at the same level.

Compared with Xperia Z5 (referring to the United States), which was launched at the beginning of the year, the improvement of Xperia X Performance is only in a few parts, and at the same price, the Xperia X Performance purchased by American consumers also lacks the function of fingerprint recognition, which is unavoidably painful and unacceptable. Sony has many ways to solve the market problem of this machine, but in view of the actual performance of Xperia X Performance, it does not belong to the flagship model this year.
