Before X, the late Xperia Z5 Premium gave a detailed review

Sony's latest Xperia X series will be launched in June this year. Fans who are waiting for the new series may want to read this late Z series review to kill their spare time. Before stepping into the new distance of Xperia, look back at the previous footprints.

Appearance&Packaging

Appearance and packaging“ Faith blessing, cherry blossom powder Sony Z5 Premium picture appreciation ”As already described in, interested oils can be viewed by jumping over. Here we mainly mention the problem worth complaining about in actual use: the position of the volume key. The volume key on the Z series has always been sandwiched between the power key and the photo key. But this time, the Z5 Premium power key has integrated fingerprint recognition. In order to facilitate users to unlock its position in the middle and lower, the volume key at the lower part will affect daily use. It will be more appropriate to place it above the power key. In addition, the touch of the power key is different from that of the previous Z-series high-grade clock design because of the fingerprint recognition, which is a small defect of Z5 Premium. But beauty is the first productivity. What is a volume key. (laughing)

Screen quality

As the world's first smartphone equipped with a 4K screen, its screen performance is certainly curious. From the development of the previous 720P, 1080P and 2K screens, this 4K screen is likely to encounter power consumption and brightness problems. Please refer to the detailed test data for details.

The 4K screen does not have X-Reality or super realistic mode enabled. The white balance is the default, and the color temperature is as high as 9996K. The number close to 10000 proves that this is a large cold screen. The test results are also consistent with the actual appearance. When you switch to the iPhone suddenly after using Z5 Premium for a period of time, you will instantly feel that the iPhone screen is slightly warm.

If the above configuration is used for testing (because of the test software, it cannot be adjusted to the same color temperature as Z5 Premium, and D75 standard is used for testing), the average Δ E is 6.7, and the maximum Δ E even goes to 12. However, considering the large gap between the test standard and the actual situation, this result is expected.

So enter the white balance to set the color temperature to the standard 6500K and then test (the test standard is also changed to D65). The average Δ E drops to 5.2, and the maximum Δ E is 8.2. The data is much better than the default, but it is relatively poor in horizontal comparison. It can also be seen that the screen has made many compromises in other aspects for the 4K resolution.

After adjusting the white balance, the brightness is also affected. If no adjustment is made, the maximum brightness can reach more than 500 nits. But once the white balance is adjusted, the maximum brightness will fall to more than 300 nits. It is unclear why Sony designed this way.

In contrast, if different settings are used, their values will also change. The white balance has been adjusted, but X-Reality or Super Realistic mode has not been turned on, only 825; By default, the white balance will go to 964 if X-Reality or Super Realistic mode is not enabled; When the contrast is the highest, it is the default of white balance. When the super realistic mode is turned on, it can reach 1259.

For this 4K screen, the author's suggestion is to turn on the automatic brightness adjustment, set the white balance to the color temperature you feel most comfortable with, and choose to turn on or off according to your personal needs in X-Reality or ultra realism mode, and then use it naturally. After all, no matter how much you focus on parameters such as brightness and contrast, small changes will change, unless you can use it against a large cold screen of nearly 10000.

Performance and system

The sakura pink Z5 Premium tested this time comes with Android 6.0 system and has been updated to the latest Hong Kong firmware version. In terms of performance, the configuration of Snapdragon 810+3G memory was the flagship standard last year, and the results after running a full set of performance tests were similar to the Nexus 6P. In the RAR single thread test, only the single core A53 was enabled due to scheduling problem 810, so the score was anxious; In terms of Pi, there are many cores, so it is ahead of 820.

In the GPU test, Snapdragon 810's performance was quite good. In the Sling Shot Test 2 of 3DMark, it even slightly exceeded the latest Exynos 8890. What's a bit jerry built is the flash memory. The reading speed is OK, but the writing speed is lagging behind. More detailed data can go to Running points library Self query in.

In terms of the system, the interface is still the familiar Xperia UI: UXP, Close to the original layout, with Sony's own characteristics. It is worth mentioning that after upgrading to Android 6.0, the smoothness of the whole system has reached a higher level, without the sluggish feeling you would feel when operating before. Because it is a Hong Kong version of the system, the Google framework and services are built into it, and Google Now can also be started normally. However, due to the special situation in China, the localization of UXP is insufficient, and there is no support from Google services. Users who are accustomed to MIUI, Flyme and other domestic ROMs may not be accustomed to it, and there are also slight defects in functions. It should be OK for users who are accustomed to the native system to switch, but the system with large and comprehensive preferences may be disappointed.

Unfortunately, after Sony pushed Android 6.0, the original popular STAMINA power saving mode was replaced by the original Battery Saver. Although marshmallow still has the help of Doze mode, the effect can only be said to be a drop in the bucket. Doze is basically useless when domestic rogue apps constantly wake up to each other. The good news is that Sony has promised that the STAMINA function will return in future system updates.

Photo upgrade

In terms of photography, the Z5 series has really improved. Not only has the hardware been upgraded to 23 million G-lens+IMX300, but also the interface has been upgraded. Manual mode, automatic mode, video recording and various camera apps can be directly switched by sliding, which is more convenient. However, the display mode of camera apps is not appropriate. It may be better to use lists or small icons to display.

It is gratifying to finally be able to use 23 million and 20 million pixels in the automatic mode (the so-called golden camera), instead of having to endure the previous limit of locking up to 8 million pixels. In contrast, the manual mode provides options such as scene switching, adjusting exposure compensation and white balance. However, if it is set to 20 or 23 million pixels, ISO and scene cannot be adjusted manually. In this regard, there is still a gap with other manufacturers. I hope Sony can add more options for adjustment in later updates.

Considering the usage habits, the daytime sample Z5 Premium uses the automatic mode, which is locked at 23 million pixels. In contrast, the Samsung Note 5, an Android photography benchmark, is in the full automatic mode. The above is shot with Note 5, and the following is the Z5 Premium sample. You can see that the Z5 Premium wide-angle lens can shoot more content, and the words "Science Park" on the top floor next door can also be shot in the upper right corner. Both of them perform well in terms of white balance. Note 5 is more accurate, and Z5 Premium has low color saturation.

Zoom in to 100% in the center, and you can see that the sample of Note 5 is more clear and sharp, while Z5 Premium loses many details due to too much smearing, and the advantage of high pixels is not reflected. The Z5 Premium wide-angle lens also brings another disadvantage: sharp decrease in the edge image quality, which Sony cannot avoid, so we can see that the gap between the edge and the Note 5 is larger.

Outdoor scene 1

Outdoor Scene 2

In terms of white balance, Z5 Premium is more accurate in the restoration of green plants in outdoor scene 1. However, no matter in which scene, excessive smearing does not give play to the strength of 23 million pixels, and its analytical power is not as good as the 16 million pixels of Note 5.

In this group of samples, although Z5 Premium is still hard to paint, thanks to the compensation of high pixels, the details can barely compete with Note 5. The wide-angle lens also captured the words on the crane and the higher floors opposite.

Of all the samples, only this group of Z5 Premium has a better white balance than Note 5. But when faced with a large area of green, Z5 Premium does not know why it occasionally makes mistakes. The following samples are taken. It seems that Sony's algorithm still has a lot to improve.

In terms of night view, as Z5 Premium can trigger up to 12800 ISO only when it is set to 8 million pixels+automatic mode, this mode is added for comparison. The combination of Z5 Premium automatic mode and 23 million yuan is the best way to restore the scene light source. Note 5 sample has the best details. The words of Tencent Building in the distance still have a contour, and Z5 Premium is completely useless. In addition, Z5 Premium smears too much, so even if it is 8 million pixels, the actual difference between its discrimination and 23 million pixels is not very obvious.

In these two groups of comparison samples, Note 5 is completely defeated by Z5 Premium in terms of details. Compared with the predecessors of the previous Z series, Z5 Premium has a lot of better glare control. No single light source can produce "perfect X glare" in the past. In addition, the scene where the side of the building is illuminated by green light in the sample picture has only been restored from the high pixel 2300 Universal, but the purity of the picture is really not as good as the 8 million automatic mode.

Compared with the negative optimization of Sony, the performance of Z5 Premium is much better this time. The automatic mode has added high pixel support, which is no longer as bad as before, but the manual mode is a little worse. Although the actual sample is still some distance from the Android benchmark, this time we can see the sincerity of Sony Mobile and hope that such powerful hardware can be further improved in future updates.

Endurance&fever

In terms of endurance, the battery capacity of the 5.5 inch Z5 Premium machine is 3430mAh. In our 3-hour endurance test, 66% of the power is left. A careful observation of each sub project shows that the Z5 Premium has a total power loss of 9% in the half hour video test, which is the largest among all models. It seems that the power consumption of this 4K screen is indeed high.

As for the Snapdragon 810, nicknamed "Fire Dragon", Sony has ever stumbled on Z3+(Z4), so this time, the Z5 series directly connected two heat pipes to "kill the dragon". The temperature is measured 30 minutes after the big game (NBA 2K15). The highest temperature is 42.5 ℃ on the front and 45.2 ℃ on the back. Of course, the location is where 810 is. This kind of temperature contrast has made great progress, but because of the Z5 Premium double-sided glass and metal middle frame design, the temperature of the middle frame is high when you hold it. If you can't accept it, go to "water cooling".

tail

As the flagship of last year, Z5 Premium is hard to compete with the current new machine in all aspects. Previously, the only IP68 waterproof and dust-proof Samsung was also realized on the S7/S7 edge. If you need to buy it, in my opinion, only the belief in the Sony logo and the colorful and beautiful body colors are left. After all, not every manufacturer can make Fags The industrial design of sakura powder and Z5 Premium is worth 5K in my mind. (laughing)
