Myth of Windows 10 Mobile: When can mobile phones be PC based?

It is estimated that more than 80% of computer operators have fantasized about it, If The performance of the mobile phone is strong enough to replace the computer host. When working, it can connect to the data line or even connect to the monitor and keyboard and mouse wirelessly. It is estimated that the psychological experience of turning a complete PC into a pocket is much higher than that of "putting the music library into a pocket" of the iPod in those years, and the meaning of productivity is also much higher.

Recently, foreign developers found 4, 6, 8, 12, 16GB of memory and up to 2, 4, 6GB of video memory in the new API of Windows 10 Mobile. Many flagship Snapdragon 820+6GB memory+128GB storage configurations have exceeded many Ultrabooks in terms of value, and the crazy configuration support provided by Windows 10 Mobile this time has directly exceeded 70% of desktops.

Maybe it's wrong

However, this new API update is related to the news that "Windows 10 Mobile will provide a 64 bit version" a week ago. Although many media have speculated that Microsoft is going to complete the great cause of mobile phone PC, it is estimated that Microsoft's original intention is to "set" the 64 bit version of Windows 10 Mobile's hardware peak support. For example, 64 bit Win7 can support up to 192GB of memory (because addressing is not exhausted, the value is far less than the 64th power of 2), but until now, everyone's PCs are only 4-16GB of memory, and support does not necessarily have to be stacked.

N Schemes for Opening Brain Holes

ME860 and expansion dock

Using mobile phones as computers is a long cherished wish of the IT industry many years ago. The earliest and most famous scheme of "modern times" originates from moto, the ME860 and other models of moto support the expansion dock, and the machine is equipped with both Ubuntu and Android systems. After accessing the expansion dock, you can run Ubuntu and let Android run in the window. After Ubuntu had its own mobile phone system, it also had a similar mobile phone PC solution.

Then comes the "Continuum" function of Windows 10 Mobile, which also supports external keyboard, mouse and display through the docking station, and also provides PC based interface adaptation. At the beginning of this year, Intel also gave its own demonstration machine, the prototype of SoFIA platform, which uses Atom x3 processor+2GB memory+16GB storage. After connecting the keyboard and mouse, it can run Linux system. The craziest thing is that a foreign manufacturer put the real X86 Win10 into a mobile phone.

Recently, there is also a different scheme in the crowdfunding platform, which allows mobile phones and tablets to expand their screens in the form of external devices. For details, see the article《 800 yuan cross platform PC solution designed against the sky 》。

But unfortunately, even in the generation of Lumia950/950XL, even the already powerful SoC like Snapdragon 810, when running the PC desktop, there is still a noticeable jam, and the use experience is indeed very different from the current PC.

In addition, the biggest factor preventing mobile phone from being PC based is software. Although the kernel of Windows 10 Mobile is the same as that of the desktop version of Windows 10, the most frequently used and most productive exe programs cannot be run on mobile phones. The problem of program compatibility is enough to kill any future system. The Surface RT and Windows 8 RT supporting ARM processors disappeared for this reason.

There are only two ways

The mobile phone is either a PC system or a PC stuffed into the mobile phone: the idea of the former is to build a new desktop system on the ARM processor, Ubuntu and Lunix are the fastest system options, while Android and Windows 10 Mobile are both PC based, hoping to provide productivity apps that adapt to large screen and mouse operation. In the final analysis, their bottleneck lies in software.

The solution of the latter is to wait for the mobile SoC to provide strong performance and power control so that the complete X86 and even X64 win10 systems can run directly. Unfortunately, even the PC processor core M with the highest energy consumption ratio now has a power consumption of 4.5W, which is a huge power consumption that mobile devices like mobile phones cannot support.

The fastest and most ferocious way is definitely the latter, but after all, it is now the 14nm era, and the 7nm process may not be able to provide much higher efficiency ratio. Unless there is a major technological breakthrough in the near future, the possibility of mobile phones running desktop Windows in four years is not high. Of course, Intel, which recently began to fall out of Moore's Law, may be more reliable than software manufacturers and developers
