Microsoft For a long time, our smart phones have not appeared in front of us. The last high-end Windows phone was launched almost two years ago. At that time, there was also the Nokia logo, and the system was Windows Phone 8. Now the company has finally launched two new mobile phones to change the current situation. They are Lumia 950 And his eldest brother Lumia 950XL ——Microsoft's weapon against Android and iOS is equipped with new processors, high-resolution screens, good cameras and more functions. This is also the first model Windows 10 Microsoft believes that Windows 10 is not only a desktop platform, but also a mobile operating system.
Windows 10 is Microsoft's great effort for mobile platform. It hopes to attract developers to this platform and realize some functions that Apple or Google cannot provide. The sales volume of the new Lumia will not be too high, but it will serve as a benchmark for Windows mobile phones. If Microsoft can't let people know why it needs to buy Windows phones, its mobile phone business will be in jeopardy. So, can Microsoft bring something unique with Windows?
The focus of Lumia 950 is obviously not on hardware, but after all, it is a machine that is often used in hand. Let's talk about it briefly. It is not a kind of equipment with bright spots on the appearance - plain, plastic stacked and tacky, lacking in design sense, it feels like a machine using a public mold. What's worse, you can't distinguish it from low-end Windows devices introduced in the past few years. To put it mildly, it is a benchmark design; To put it crudely, it looks cheap. But the 950 is a $600 machine, which is more expensive than Google's Nexus 6P or Apple's iPhne 6s. Compared with them, the 950 is embarrassing.
The 950 is much better in configuration: it has a mainstream processor (Qualcomm Snapdragon 808), a large memory (3GB), enough storage space (32GB), and supports SD card, a large replaceable battery (3000mAh). It also supports fast charging and wireless charging. The 5.2 inch display with 2K resolution is sharp, which is a little faded. All things work well together, and there are no serious performance problems encountered in daily use.
The 20 megapixel camera on the back works well, although it is not surprising, it is no problem. For most people, they will be very satisfied with the quality of 950's photos. It's just that the speed of taking photos is a little slow. This shortcoming has made people crazy more than once. But the 950's camera does not have the same breakthrough technology or functions as its predecessors before, making it comparable to Apple or Samsung. The front 5 million yuan is only used to meet the occasional demand for selfie. There is nothing special about it.
So the hardware is very boring. Microsoft's success depends on the software. Windows 10 is a powerful tool for Microsoft to unify smart phones, tablets and computers. It enables mobile phones to run the same underlying code as the Surface Book, which costs $1500.
Although Windows 10 has the same underlying code as tablets or computers on the 950, the mobile interface is not very different from WP 8.1. There are only a few adjustments in details. The main interface is still the magnet. The program list is sorted alphabetically, and the monotonous animation effect remains unchanged. If you don't like the design of WP 8.1, you won't like Windows 10 either.
Like the desktop version of Windows 10, the mobile version of Windows 10 seems to be a semi-finished product, which is still an immature mobile operating system due to the lack of various aspects. Don't misunderstand. It works normally, but it seems to collapse at any time during use. Of course, the favorite features of the desktop version of Windows 10 have also been added: Cortana, a fun and easy-to-use virtual assistant, the new Edge browser, and the mobile version of Windows 10 mail and calendar (strangely, it is called Outlook on the mobile phone, which is actually the same application), meeting the demand for the mobile version and desktop version of Windows to have the same experience. Lumia 950 even has the new Hello function of Windows 10, which can be unlocked as long as you look at the phone, without PIN code or password. This function is cool, and the recognition rate is high. It is a little slow and needs to look at the phone foolishly. Using the PIN code will usually unlock faster than using Hello (it will be faster if the 950 is equipped with fingerprint).
The function that really distinguishes Lumia 950 and Windows 10 from Android or iPhone is Continuum, which allows you to turn a small phone into a complete computer. To achieve this function, you need to prepare Microsoft 99 Blade Display Dock (or a Miracast converter), mouse and keyboard (Bluetooth or USB) and external display. Connect the phone to the Dock, and then connect various peripherals to the Dock, and the content on the phone will appear on the display. Continuum will recognize the size and resolution of the display and display the complete desktop, including the start menu and the control center. It looks almost the same as the desktop version of Windows 10. Without a mouse, it can also be directly used as a mobile phone, and can also separate the content of the mobile phone from the display - let children watch movies in front of the display while processing email information on the mobile phone.
Open an app in Continuum mode, such as Outlook Mail or Edge browser, and it will automatically fit to a larger display screen. Although there is no window, users can also use the shortcut key Alt+Tab to switch to complete multitasking. I really enjoy using Continuum to view my inbox, write Word documents or browse lightweight web pages. Most of the time, my performance is very good, but when I use the browser, I expose limitations: the browser always tries to load a complete desktop web page, including advertisements and multimedia resources, instead of loading pages optimized for mobile devices. After opening a few more pages, you will experience the same stuck, unsmooth sliding, slow loading speed and so on as the old computer.
But the bigger problem with Continuum is that only a few apps can support it, most of which are Microsoft's own applications. Even though it is convenient to reply to an email in Outlook or write a document in Word, I cannot use Slack on the display, which will seriously reduce my work efficiency, and the commonly used Netflix cannot support it. Microsoft promised on Windows 10 that there would be "Universal App" (general program) that can run on mobile phones and computers, but the reality is cruel. Continuum's desire to replace computers is still far away.
I don't believe that using Continuum with a bunch of accessories is more convenient than using a small notebook directly, and the latter is more powerful and guaranteed. Perhaps some enterprises think that this is a perfect "thin client" solution. Users only need to take a mobile phone with them. Unfortunately, the targeted users are not most of us.
Continuum highlights the shortcomings of Windows 10, which has been a problem for Microsoft for many years: it does not surprise people, and the platform does not have rich and attractive applications like Android and iOS. When using the 950, I can't use Gmail or inbox to manage email, view my friend's Snapchat account, adapt my smart watch, or even pay for lunch with my mobile phone. What's more regrettable is that even for the same applications, the functions are not as good as those on Android or iOS platforms (that is, you - Instagram and Twitter). Maybe there is no problem for users who buy 150 smartphones, but as the best flagship model Microsoft can provide, 950 will be a big stumbling block for those who consider high-end phones.
On mobile devices, Microsoft lags behind Google and Apple, and there is an insurmountable gap between them. If you want to leap over, you must achieve visual impact on mobile phones, and make up for the gap with other platforms through vigorous innovation. Unfortunately, these were not found on Lumia 950. Microsoft did add some interesting features to it, but they were not enough to impress consumers or even Windows fans to buy. The best email, calendar and Cortana on Windows 10 will also be available on Android and iOS, so there are fewer reasons to choose Windows 10.
Under the leadership of Satya Nadella, Microsoft pays more attention to whether you use their home services than to which mobile platform you use. Usually, you will get the best experience of Microsoft Home Services on other platforms. If you are hopeful about Microsoft's new mobile phone, you will be disappointed in Lumia 950 (also applicable to 950XL). Most of us are happy to use Outlook to manage our email on iPhone.
