According to foreign media, Google is now in talks with some chip manufacturers to produce chips designed by Google. Just as Apple uses its own Samsung OEM A-series chips on the iPhone, Google intends to do similar things on Android, aiming to build a better Android ecosystem and compete with Apple in the high-end market. For this reason, Google tries to persuade chip companies like Qualcomm to contract design chips for them, although these chip companies may lose some competitiveness.
Google wants to design its own chips because the "enterprise class connectivity device" planned to be built this fall needs to rely entirely on internal technology, thus starting to discuss the feasibility of designing its own chips. The Pixel C hybrid tablet released in September may be one of them. Google's strategy allows some new features, such as augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR), to be updated to future Android, better integrating hardware and software.
However, now various OEM manufacturers are using chips from different manufacturers according to their own needs. Qualcomm, Samsung, MediaTek, etc. in the Android camp have certain market shares, and Google's self-designed chips are unlikely to be adopted. In addition, within Google, there are not enough technicians for chip design, so it is difficult to carry out research and development on their own, and it depends on whether the other party is willing to cooperate with chip manufacturers in research and development. If you only cooperate with general chip manufacturers, you may not be able to produce high-end chips to meet the requirements. Of course, Google's own son Nexus series may be the first experimental field.
