Smaller and cheaper son: Nexus 5X experience evaluation
Smaller and cheaper son: Nexus 5X experience evaluation

With the big update of Android 6.0 (Marshmallow), Google has added two new players to its pro son series: Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Compared with the aura above the 6P, the 5X is unknown. However, as an upgraded version of the LG Nexus 5, it can't help but make people look forward to it. Can Google make it the main midrange model, which can bring excellent performance? Come and have a look Love to play computer games Translate and sort out the first-hand experience of addictive technology. Follow the Nexus 6P by clicking

Appearance and configuration

The Nexus 5X is not a high-end model. Compared with the all metal design of the 6P, the polycarbonate material and lightweight body are not so eye-catching. Low profile doesn't mean there is no design. The comfortable back, smooth corners, and smooth and excessive arc make 5X very comfortable to hold. The cream white back cover (also available in robin blue and carbon black) and black front panel make this common combination easy for more people to accept.

Compared with its predecessor Nexus 5, 5X is very similar in size, with a three dimension of 147x72.6x7.9 mm. When smart phones are developing towards a larger trend (6P is a good example), "small screen" phones like 5X are more suitable for single hand operation and easy to be stuffed into pockets, which can meet the needs of some people, even though they are relatively small, 5X is still crammed into a 5.2 inch screen by Google.

It is not different from other mobile phones. The 5X has the volume key and power key on the right, the SIM card slot on the left, and a 5 million front camera and light sensor on the top of the front. At the bottom are the headphone interface and USB Type-C interface. However, 5X is not equipped with two data cables like the 6P, only one Type-C to Type-C, and none Type-C to Type-A. Google is a bit unkind. The main camera with 12.3 million pixels is on the back, with dual color temperature flash light and infrared laser focusing mode set. Below the camera is a fingerprint sensor called "Nexus Imprint" by Google.

As a $400 machine, the 5X is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 1.8GHz processor, Adreno 418 GPU and 2GB LDPPR3 memory. Unfortunately, it does not support SD card expansion. You should select the 16GB or 32GB version in advance. Google has also equipped an "Android Sensor Hub" for 5X to realize intelligent operation and extend the endurance. By the way, 5X supports Google's latest Fi carrier service, which is just a blessing for China.

Screen and sound quality

5X is a midrange model. Of course, it can't be expected to be equipped with WQHD AMOLED screen like 6P, but 5X is a 1080P screen that performs well. The ppi value of 423 is enough for daily use. The display is sharp and colorful. All white and all black have good effects. The readability in the sun is very good. The third-generation gorilla glass has an oil drainage layer to avoid oil stains and fingerprints.

If the sound quality is good, the 5X with only one front speaker does not need any stereo effect. The sound quality is very average. There is no bass or mid-range sound. It is better than the volume. It is more than enough for a conference call.

Marshmallow system

Since it is the Nexus series of my own son, the biggest charm of course is the latest system Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The first thing I can feel is the new UI of Google Now Launcher. The program list is changed to scroll up and down instead of sliding left and right. At the top are four commonly used programs. In the experience of the author (editor of addictive technology), it is still quite intelligent, and can basically predict the apps that need to be opened (most of the time only open Gmail, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram), and can also directly enter the name of the app to search.

But the most prominent feature in Marshmallow is definitely the new Now on Tap. Simply press and hold the Home key, the system will automatically recognize the information on the current screen, and automatically search for relevant results feedback, including videos, images, maps, phones, etc., which is more intelligent to meet the needs of users. It's just that for Chinese users, the system uses Google search. App permission management has also changed; Auto Backup can also automatically backup and restore applications, so it is no longer troublesome to switch devices; The new Doze mode can identify the status of the phone, enhance the experience and extend the use time, which are all in the 6P It is mentioned in. Those who are interested can go to read it.

camera

Although 5X is not the flagship, the camera module with 12.3 million, f/2.0 aperture and 1.55 μ m unit pixel area, which is the same as the 6P, has been used for several days, and the imaging is amazing. It is a qualitative leap compared with the previous Nexus series.

Progress must be acknowledged, but it does not represent excellence: color reproduction is not ideal, and indoor photo samples will appear dim; On cloudy days, when shooting the sky, the clouds appear more than real. In general, the image quality is good, the picture is clear, the details are rich, and the effect is better when the light is sufficient. Turn on HDR to obtain better white balance, which requires an additional two seconds of processing time and is not suitable for capturing.

(Nexus 5X Night View Sample)

In the low light environment, 5X's performance is unexpected: the highlight area is not too bright, and the shadow part is not too dark, just right. As for the extreme low light, 5X has nothing to do with it: the shutter speed slows down with the increase of noise, and the object will be blurred if it moves carelessly during shooting. Turning on the dual color flash lamp can indeed alleviate these problems to some extent, but occasionally it will be overexposed.

The photographing interface is almost the same as before. It also has the functions of timing photographing, HDR mode, flash setting, and 4K video recording. In addition, the 360 degree panorama of Photo Sphere is still reserved. After taking photos, there is also a built-in editing tool that can do some processing on photos. Prepositive The performance of the 5 million camera is OK, and it is enough to send it to Instagram.

Performance and endurance

In terms of performance, 5X's Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 64 bit SoC, LG G4 and Moto X Prue also use this chip, which is still competitive at the same price. In daily use, there is no lag in switching between various programs. Occasionally, there is a slight delay when opening the app or video for the first time, but it is still acceptable. In the performance test in the above figure, the 5X and 6P encountered the same problem when compared with the models of the same level: the results were terrible. 5X lags far behind its competitors in almost every test (except SunSpider), and CF Bench has less than 40000 points. Running points sometimes doesn't reflect the real situation of the machine.

In terms of endurance, the 5X battery is 2700mAh, which is smaller than the G4 and Moto X Prue. In fact, it is not as durable as these two models. In the standard endurance test (the brightness is set at 50% to play HD video), 5X persisted for 8 hours and 45 minutes. After a full day of normal use (taking and uploading a large number of pictures, emails, Twitter and Facebook), the power dropped to 10% 14 hours later. Even if the battery life is not excellent, thanks to the Type-C USB interface supporting fast charging, the power can be from 0% to 25% in 10 minutes, which is very convenient for daily use.

Short comments

The 16GB version costs $379, and the 32GB version costs $429. Perhaps the Nexus 5X is not as cost-effective as the predecessor Nexus 5. Compared with the one plus two and Moto X Prue, it also suffers a lot in terms of hardware. At this price, you can get a mobile phone with excellent screen, fingerprint identification, smooth system, and good camera. You don't need to spend a lot of money to get 6Ps to experience pure Android. The Nexus 5X is for users with these needs. As for the Chinese people, the new Marshmallow system features have almost been virtually "emasculated", which requires a lot of trouble in use. If you are not a Nexus fan, you'd better not cut your hands.
