[91 Disassembly] Mystery of 3D Touch iPhone 6s screen disassembly

When the iPhone 6s were disassembled last time, because Apple added 3D Touch to the screen of the iPhone 6s, and because there was no special tool, it was difficult to disassemble the screen, so the screen was not further disassembled. Before disassembling, understand the changes and characteristics of the iPhone 6s screen:

  • Add a layer of 3D Touch capacitive touch layer

  • Soft glass made by double ion exchange

  • 4.7 inch 1334 × 750 pixel (326 PPI) Retina screen

  • Integrated touch digital converter



Slightly cut the plastic frame fixing the front panel along the edge seam of the screen with a blade

When removing the plastic frame, it is worth noting that there are adhesive pads beside the plastic frame. These pads improve the water resistance of the iPhone 6s to a certain extent, which also explains one of the reasons why the waterproof ability of the iPhone 6s has improved compared with previous generations.

Take a look at the 3D Touch capacitive touch layer. Each gold rectangular grid on the touch panel is represented as each board of the parallel plate capacitor. There is a dark channel between each grid. These channels are used to run to the control chip to ensure that the capacitor of the control chip is powered on and detect the change of its current.


1. Corning, which cooperates with Apple, specially develops a relatively soft glass for the iPhone 6s;
2. After the user presses down on the glass, the contact point between the finger and the glass will be slightly bent, shortening the distance between the finger and the 3D Touch capacitive touch layer, and then a "push" signal will be formed instead of "touch";
3. In the parallel capacitor, the capacitance is inversely proportional to the distance, that is, the shorter the distance, the greater the capacitance. Therefore, the integrated circuit detects the current in the sensor board;
4. It is similar to the touch screen, but the touch screen cannot accurately sense the pressure of the fingertip. The digital converter still needs to accurately track the pressure, but these panels only need to detect whether the glass is bent.

We have just disassembled the second half of the screen. Now we separate the LCD panel from the surface glass.


We use A-plate separation to disassemble LCD panel and surface glass. This machine uses vacuum to fix the surface glass to the machine, and then heat the machine to soften the optical glue between the glass and the LCD panel. After the glue is softened, we use a molybdenum wire with a diameter of 0.08mm to separate the LCD panel.

While separating the LCD panel from the glass, the polarizing film is also damaged. Fortunately, the polarizing film is an easy to buy accessory. We use this LCD screen glue remover to remove the polarizing film and glue.

The backlight is emitted through a thin liquid crystal layer. When the light passes through the liquid crystal layer, it will be refracted. Different angles of refraction will lead to different colors on the polarizing film. In order to produce colorful color effects, each pixel is divided into red, green and blue colors to control, and thousands of pixels are combined to form different colors.



Finally, let's take a look at the side light LED backlight, which is also the most common backlight mode of LCD screen used in modern smart phones. We slowly pry off the reflective layer with a pick along the edge of the polyester film. The polyester film layer has the function of reflecting light and belongs to a part of the backlight module. On the iPhone 6s, this film has a new function - covering the hidden 3D Touch touch layer.


Light metering LED backlight, as the name implies, means that LED lights are distributed around the edges of the screen, equipped with light guide plates and reflective layers. When LED lights up, the light emitted by LED is evenly transmitted to all areas of the screen to achieve backlighting of the LCD screen.



So far, we have finished the disassembly of the iPhone 6S screen, and finally we have a family photo. In addition, we need to emphasize that unlike our previous disassembly, screen disassembly is violent and irreparable, and it is not recommended that you try to disassemble without professional tools.
