Fully automatic and fully manual? Which do we need more?
Fully automatic and fully manual? Which do we need more?

The camera function on the mobile phone has grown from scratch, from decoration to practicality. Until now, mobile phones on Android, Apple and WP platforms have been constantly improving their ability to take photos. While photography has become better and richer, in the final analysis, what kind of photography functions do we need more?

Fully automated?

Speaking of full-automatic fool shooting, Apple's iPhone is the best (the latest one is better, of course). No matter the focusing speed, white balance, noise suppression, shutter, electronic anti shake, HDR, etc., it is the best optimized and the most worry free. Even if you don't know anything about photography, as long as you know how to focus on the screen before taking a picture and then press the shutter, in most cases, your picture can be seen and the focus is clear. Moreover, even if you want to adjust the parameters, the camera parameters of iPhone are not adjustable. At most, you can open HDR, flash and other options freely.

In this respect, I have to say that many flagship Android phones are inferior to the iPhone, especially in terms of focusing speed and white balance. The WP platform is now basically owned by Nokia, and the automatic shooting effect is also relatively general. The white balance deviation is the most prominent problem of Nokia WP phones.

Manual function addition?

Can't fully automatic mode of Android phone be achieved? Then we have to move to the manual direction. The common adjustable parameters on Android computers are ISO and white balance. Of course, some Android phones cannot even adjust ISO, such as OPPO Find 7. In order to further extend the distance, more complete manual functions have been gradually added to the mobile phone, such as shutter speed, manual focusing, separation of light metering and focusing, retention of digital negatives (RAW), and even electronic simulation of the effect of gray mirrors. These things may be difficult to understand and will never be used by some ordinary consumers who do not know about photography, but in the eyes of some enthusiasts who know a little about photography, this is an important step for mobile phones to gradually move towards the professional line and leave the fool file.

In terms of manual adjustment, the iPhone's native camera is not adjustable. Android and WP systems are currently in the ascendant. The Lumia series of high-end mobile phones led by Nokia already have the application of Nokia professional photography. Manual focusing, shutter speed, white balance and ISO can be easily adjusted under professional applications. Some high-end Android models have gradually begun to support more manual functions, such as the Nubia X6 with B-door mode, gray mirror in electronic simulation, and metering focusing separation. Now it also has the high-end flagship Xplay3S and Xshot of vivo in professional mode. OPPO series models with a maximum exposure of 32 seconds (however, because they cannot adjust ISO, this long exposure is of little significance), etc. However, it is interesting to note that these manual functions are only available on domestic mobile phones at present, while foreign mobile phones such as Samsung, LG and other mobile phone brands do not have these functions. Domestic mobile phones focus on the development of manual mode, in fact, on the other hand, they also want to take this opportunity to bring closer the photographic effect of foreign high-end Android phones and highlight their innovative significance.

What exactly do we need?

In fact, in the final analysis, the automatic mode is definitely the most commonly used mode in daily life for the small editors themselves. Auto ISO, auto focus, auto white balance. Even if the ISO is slightly higher when shooting dark scenes, the slow shutter will not be used because it is handheld in daily life, and the shutter speed slower than 1/15 second is difficult to control. Generally speaking, most Android cameras now focus slowly in dark environments, but it is not said that they can't focus properly. If they can't focus properly, they can focus more times. The white balance, even for the iPhone, is not necessarily very accurate. As long as it is not too outrageous, it will not be adjusted manually.

Does this mean that there is no need for manual mode? No, definitely not. In some special shooting environments, manual mode is absolutely necessary. For example, in taking long exposure photos, manual operation is very important.

For example, in this picture, Xiaobian takes Lumia 1020 back to his hometown to shoot fireworks during the Spring Festival. This sample shows the importance of the manual function. Since fireworks burn high in the sky, the manual focus can be adjusted to the farthest distance without considering the problem of focusing far and near. To reduce noise, ISO is limited to 100. In order to get a normal exposure sample, adjust the shutter to 2.5 seconds, and extend the shutter time to fully capture the entire fireworks burst trajectory. So, when everything is ready, you just need to wait for the opportunity to press the shutter, wait for the fireworks to bloom and fall, wait for the time to stop and coagulate, and this sample will come out. In the process from pressing the shutter to the completion of the sample shooting, because the focus is fixed, you don't need to worry about the camera focusing error when shooting. Since ISO is fixed, you don't have to be afraid that too much noise will completely destroy the picture. Due to the extended exposure time, you don't need to worry about whether the camera will not be able to capture the colorful fireworks because the shutter is too fast.

Another example is this one, which uses Lumia 920 to look out from the top of a tall building and use a 4 second long exposure to shoot a night scene. Maybe from the naked eye, this scene is a bit boring. The proof shot through long exposure gives a completely different feeling. The scenery and light captured in this sample picture are far beyond what the naked eye can see. Low ISO can also restore a relatively pure night sky and retain better imaging details.

In addition, there are also long exposure graffiti and so on.

For long exposure proofs, you can go to《 Long exposure charm The strongest night view of Nokia Lumia920 》、《 Super Pixel Nokia Lumia 1020 capture review 》Look inside.

Here is a long exposure photo taken by the OBA microenterprise. It was taken on the top of a 34 story building. It was just taken at random at that time. With only 13 seconds of exposure, the stars in the sky can be seen more clearly with long exposure. It's not that Xiao Bian played tricks. It's clear that the mobile phone suddenly turned to the camera. At that time, the longest exposure on Xiao Bian's hands was 4 seconds of Lumia 1020. If the mobile phone could have a longer exposure time, it would be possible to shoot stars, even star orbits.

These manual functions are difficult to achieve with an automatic camera like iPhone.

Manual photography naturally has its infinite charm, but for people's daily use, including the small editor himself, the most commonly used mode is always the automatic shooting mode. So the editor also very much agrees with the words in the iPhone slogan:

It is more reasonable to teach iPhone how to take wonderful photos than to teach people to become professional photographers. In fact, if your mobile phone camera white balance is accurate enough, focusing speed is fast and accurate enough, ISO and shutter speed can have a good balance point, and noise reduction effect is good, do you still need to use manual mode in daily use?

If we want to answer the question of the title, considering more usage situations, we need an excellent full-automatic mode. Yes, full-automatic mode is just needed, but it must be excellent. If possible, it is best to add some manual modes, ISO、 The shutter and manual focusing functions are very practical. Although manual mode is a rare case, it will definitely happen. With manual mode, you can handle various scenarios more calmly. As for adjustable aperture and optical zoom... I can't be too demanding, because it will further increase the size of the camera. I believe no one wants a large and prominent lens on the back of the phone?

Of course, the above words are all personal opinions and do not represent the views of the public, so what do you think?
