[91 Disassembly] Nexus 5X, the reborn son of Nirvana

LG OEM Nexus 5, as Google's most popular "pro son" in history, was widely praised by Android enthusiasts. With excellent design, low price, and the support of Google's native system, it became the benchmark of Android phones for a while. The Nexus 5 also became one of the highest selling Android models in 2013/2014. The pro son's popularity in that year was unlimited.

Google initially launched the Nexus series in order to provide Android developers with a development test machine with top configuration but low price, so the sales of the pro son series have been tepid until LG OEM Nexus 4, the pro son wore a beautiful shell for the first time, and its highly technical "shiny" glass back cover was loved by users.

Only in the sun can you appreciate the charm of the Nexus 4, a shiny glass back cover.

Although the Nexus 5 does not continue the fourth son's glass back cover, its shape still retains the style of the Nexus series, coupled with the highly cost-effective and fluent Google native system, so it is reasonable to be loved by Android fans. It is not too much to rate Nexus 5 as the most popular "son in person".

Since then, Nexus 6, his son, has turned to Moto OEM, which was acquired by Google. However, Nexus 6 is huge and its price is high. The brightness of its AMOLED screen is too low, and its sales volume is much lower than Nexus 5. After experiencing the disappointment of Nexus 6, many Android users hope that Google can re launch the 5-inch Nexus phone. In 2015, Google changed its route to adopt the dual N exus of large size and small size. The Nexus 6P was manufactured by Huawei, and the beloved 5-inch son returned to LG again. The new appearance, new configuration, and new name let's see how the Nexus 5X was reborn.

Before moving the "butcher's knife", let's take a look at the configuration of the Nexus 5X:

At the bottom of the 5X, there are only USB Type-C connectors, microphone jacks and headphone jacks.

The LED light is hidden in the speaker net cover below.

5X has a huge and bulging camera on the back, double LED fill light, and a laser rangefinder beside it to help the camera focus quickly. The ring below the camera is a brand new Nexus Imprint fingerprint identifier.

We start disassembly from the rear cover, and slowly pry the rear cover with a paddle along the gap between the rear cover and the middle frame.

Different from the design of many mobile phones today, there is no adhesive between the back cover and the middle frame of the Nexus 5X.

After removing the back cover, we can carefully observe the middle frame, battery and other accessories of the Nexus 5X.

There are NFC antenna, MIMO, WiFi antenna and GPS antenna on the rear cover. The rear cover also contains information such as the body code.

5X uses a 2700mAh battery. Unfortunately, this battery is connected to the motherboard through a flat cable and cannot be replaced.

We can remove the plastic cover plate on the middle frame by unscrewing the screws on the middle frame. There are 10 screws on the middle frame.

Remove the plastic cover plate on the secondary plate, and we can see the secondary plate.

Remove the plastic cover on the system board.

We use a crowbar to remove the fingerprint identifier. This is the new Nexus Imprint fingerprint identifier.

Take a close look at this Nexus Imprint fingerprint reader. It is connected to the mainboard through contacts.

The battery can be removed with a crowbar after unplugging the flat cable. There is some adhesive bonding below.

This is a 3.8V 2700mAh lithium-ion battery produced by LG.

The camera can be removed after unplugging the flat cable. We are very interested in this 12.3 million 1.55 μ m camera.

After removing the camera, we found that this camera is a camera module composed of IMX377 sensor and F2.0 lens provided by Sony. The IMX377 sensor has 12.3 million pixels and a large unit pixel area of 1.55 μ m. However, this camera is not equipped with optical anti shake. Google believes that the sensor has such a large unit pixel area that it does not need to be equipped with optical anti shake.

The front camera can be removed by unplugging the flat cable.

We thought the Nexus 5X was a common three-stage design, but in fact, the Nexus 5X is not divided into main board and sub board, but a circuit board with integrated design.

After unplugging all cables, we can remove the motherboard. The lower part of the motherboard only has USB Type-C interface, call microphone and other components. Like LG G4, the USB Type-C interface of the Nexus 5X is welded on the motherboard. As such a vulnerable part, welding on the motherboard increases the difficulty of maintenance.

Unlike the USB Type-C jack, the headset jack of the Nexus 5X uses a contact design. This modular design is easy to repair if damaged.

This LED is the indicator hidden in the speaker net cover.

This is the end of our disassembly of the Nexus 5X. The old rule is to have a family photo. The iFixit gave the Nexus 5X 7 points for maintenance (10 points is the easiest to repair), which is a very good score. Many parts are designed in a modular way, and can be replaced directly in case of damage. Unlike Apple's products, which like to use special Torx screws, the Nexus 5X uses standard cross screws, which do not require special tools for maintenance. The top configuration, excellent appearance, obvious progress in photography compared with the past, and the first time to enjoy Google's native system. If you are also a Nexus fan, then hurry up.
