Really "imperfect", Meizu PRO 5 product analysis and launch review
Charles Fang 2016-09-24 15:49

On the second day after Xiaomi 4c was released, Meizu released a new high-end flagship series "PRO" at the same place, and the first of the series was PRO 5. The officials are confident to promote it as "imperfect", but unfortunately, this is just our view of it.

Meizu

As for Meizu itself, the opening point was to replace the brand logo with a more rounded font, and announced that Meizu's sales volume in August was 2.89 million. In contrast, Meizu sold 8.9 million units in the first half of this year (an increase of 540%); Xiaomi's sales volume in the first half of this year was 34.7 million (up 33%); Huawei is 50 million (including 25 million in the domestic market, an increase of 40%).

Although Meizu has a good reputation, its sales volume is far smaller than expected. Since the MX4 last year, Meizu has almost kept the frequency of one press conference every month. The Jihai strategy has brought high attention, but also brought significant sales growth. However, compared with the domestic brands with the largest sales volume (Xiaomi, Huawei), there is a gap of nearly twice the size.

In addition, strangely, the press conference also claimed that flyme users had exceeded 25 million, but the sales volume in the first half of the year and August had not yet reached 12 million, even though the sales volume in July was 2.89 million, which means Meizu had more than 10 million users before 2015? The number of 25 million users has more content, so you can have a look. (Flyme is rarely transplanted to third parties, and it almost only runs on Meizu mobile phones. Meizu has also launched models running ubuntu and Alibaba YunOS.).

PRO 5

Meizu PRO5 uses a 5.7 inch 1080P Super AMOLED screen, and the chip part is highly coincident with Samsung S6: Exynos 7420+UFS2.0 storage+Samsung Shannon 333 baseband+3050mAh battery, front 500+rear 21 million pixel camera (IMX230), Type-C interface supporting mCharge fast charge and upgraded Hifi circuit, mobile Unicom dual card dual standby dual 4G, 3G+32G version price 2799 yuan, 4G+64G price 3099 yuan. The reservation starts on the same day, and it will be officially launched on October 12.

Before the release of the iPhone 6s, Meizu released the appearance rendering of PRO 5 in advance to prevent the appearance design from crashing. After seeing the real machine, I finally understood why Meizu wanted to release its appearance in advance. The corners of the new machine are more rounded, the side radian is reduced and 2.5D glass is added. I have to say that Meizu's machine is more and more like the iPhone 6.

The screen is a big hole

The largest slot point of PRO 5 is the 5.7 inch 1080P Super AMOLED screen. Its parameters are the same as those of Note3 two years ago. Note that it was two years ago. And even two years ago, the performance of this screen was not good. However, the key point is not the resolution, but the Pentile sub-pixel arrangement of screen A.

Subpixel arrangement of Note3

The diamond pixel arrangement mentioned in the press conference is actually a Pentile arrangement. The latter is the arrangement of shared sub pixels between adjacent pixels, which will have a certain impact on the display fineness. When displaying black and white text, you will see a more obvious sense of sawtooth. Therefore, the A-screen with row P requires higher resolution to achieve the same precision as the IPS screen. But now we can't find the A screen arranged in RGB (once used on note2), which is also the reason why "no 2K, no A screen" is said.

MX4 Pro claims that screen power consumption is only 5% higher than MX4

Maybe kerosene will say that the 2K screen consumes electricity, and only the wheel eye can see the difference. But here we can clearly tell that even for myopia, even for the MX5 with higher PPI, this low resolution P-row A screen will also see obvious "big fruit" pixels at a close distance.

When the screen size rises to 5.7 inches, even 1080P resolution is only 387 PPI. But if the PRO 5 is willing to use the IPS screen as well as the One Plus 2 and iPhone 6Plus, even the 1080P will not get many complaints. But since 1080P screen is used, why should it be the A screen of row P?

In addition, unlike Sony, Samsung has never sold its top products to others. The performance of the A screen not used by Samsung itself has been poor (there are countless guns lying here in moto). It is estimated that the PRO 5 screen may encounter the same yellow and solid color display problems as the MX5. In addition, the Flyme system has no screen color temperature adjustment function, so people have to worry about its color accuracy.

But even if we set aside the parameters and product performance itself, it is unreasonable to use a screen that even the MX5 is inferior to the flagship series. Besides, Meizu also has an MX4 Pro with a 2K screen. Why didn't you say that the 2K screen was hot last year? What is more striking is that the screen performance of the MX5 is even better than that of the MX4 with negative LCD technology. Now the screen fineness of the PRO 5 is not as good as that of the MX5. However, the screen fineness of the MX5 with A screen is not as good as that of Meilan note

On the whole, Meizu's flagship screen performance is worse every year, and the more expensive it is, the worse it is... In my opinion, this screen simply does not deserve the name of "PRO", and the official propaganda is "imperfect", which is exactly this screen.

Performance part: copy S6, Android performance peak

From the Exynos 4210 of the original MX, Meizu flagship has always used Samsung processors. Samsung always gives priority to its own flagship, while the Samsung S series flagship is released in March to April, and Meizu flagship is released in September to October, so Meizu always gets the same processor as the S series six months ago.

This time, Samsung did not equip the Note 5 with a new processor, so Meizu also "incidentally" used the most powerful Android processor, Exynos 7420. The latter is based on the 14nm process. It is a 4 * 1.5GHz A53+4 * 2.1GHz A57 architecture. The GPU is a 772 MHz Mali-T760 MP8 with a 32-bit dual channel 1552MHz DDR4 memory. Even if it is only a low configuration version of 3G memory, its bandwidth has reached a distraught 24.88Gb/s. It is one of the few CPUs that can drag 2K screens perfectly.

The UFS2.0 storage, which is much faster than eMMC 5.0 in read-write speed, and Samsung's Shannon 333 baseband and other peripheral configurations are the same as Samsung's S6/S6 edge/Note5. Samsung has a conscience towards Meizu, an old teammate. Even though Samsung only gives Meizu 7420 with poor physique (although it may be so), with the shrunken 1080P screen, the performance of PRO 5 is unique in Android platform.

Instructions for PRO 5 card slot

In terms of network system, Samsung's Shannon 333 baseband supports dual card dual standby dual 4G of China Mobile and China Unicom, as well as CAT6 and 4G+of China Unicom. However, it does not support the CDMA system, and once again it has no chance with the telecom users.

In addition, the current and/or card slots share the same location as the TF card and the sim card 2. TF card expansion cannot be performed when using dual cards (the card holder that can support both dual cards and TF cards is only available on Moto X Style for the time being). Users who need dual cards and memory expansion should pay special attention.

The camera has been slightly improved, and the optical anti shake is still absent

The 5 megapixel front camera of the PRO 5 is completely the same as the MX5, but the rear camera has been upgraded from the ancestral IMX220 to the IMX230 that supports PDAF phase focusing. The available pixels have also been slightly improved (from 20.7 million to 21 million), and the protective glass has been upgraded from the third generation gorilla to sapphire. The other upgrade comes from the 7420 ISP. PRO 5 supports 24 consecutive shots per second.

Comparison of three generation Meizu flagship camera parameters

It is estimated that the design of MX5 is still used for the lens set, both 6P lens and f2.2 aperture, so there is still no optical anti shake. New small aperture+high pixel+no optical anti shake, doomed the weak light imaging of MX5 and PRO5 will not be too good. However, judging from the performance of the MX5, it is not a problem that the PRO 5's comprehensive imaging performance should rank above the middle level of domestic machines.

Compared with the improvement of imaging, IMX230 brings more improvement of photography experience. In addition to the PDAF phase focusing, its imaging speed will certainly be faster than the MX5. After all, even the HiSilicon processor+IMX230 Glory 7 has a good imaging speed, and S6 PRO 5, No matter how poor the performance is, there is a spectrum.

Defeat Flyme OS

Flyme OS is an important competitiveness of Meizu mobile phones, but what I never expected was that Flyme5.0 would be pushed back. Another slot is that the latest flagship PRO 5 can't be upgraded until November 15. Of course, the latter may be a good thing

Setting and multitasking interface

The style of Flyme5.0 has changed greatly, incorporating a large number of Android native designs, and canceling the bottom navigation bar and multi task interface that are convenient for one hand control. The slide operation that people used to like is also inevitable. The aesthetic retrogression is most obvious in the settings page. It is clear that this product is just a minor change of the original Android 5.0

The functions of active defense, application whitewashing (permission control), remote positioning, silent photography, automatic alarm, etc. in the press conference are also the original functions of Flyme and other manufacturers, and there is nothing special about them. The most noteworthy is the memory compression technology, which claims that it can significantly reduce the memory occupation and uses MIUI to hang on. However, the official did not provide actual data. Whether it is useful or not needs further evaluation to confirm.

However, in general, the new system has not changed much in function, but there has been a relatively obvious setback in aesthetics. Many of the acclaimed features of flyme have been canceled, which has to be regretted. Therefore, we do not recommend you to upgrade before confirming whether you can downgrade. After all, Flyme itself has many bugs. This major UI change may bring more bugs, and early versions may be more sad to use.

Overblown Hifi and endurance

PRO 5 adopts Type-C interface supporting mCharge fast charging, and upgrades Hifi circuit. For Type-C, although it is destined to be the mainstream in the future, it is still just a fashion setting. For the time being, no manufacturer has introduced a Type-C interface that supports both fast charging and USB 3.0 speed output. Basically, it can only be compatible with one of them.

The PRO 5 naturally chooses fast charging, which the author agrees with very much. However, from the experience of LeEco and One Plus Two, it is better to provide a Type-C cable or interface than to distinguish between the positive and negative traditional mirco USB interfaces.

The mCharge fast charge performance on the MX5 is quite good. In addition to the OPPO abnormal VOOC flash charge and S6 and other models with smaller battery capacity, the charging speed can also rank top, and the PRO 5 should also perform well.

Endurance performance in PPT

But don't believe the PPT on this page of the press conference. It simply blows the life of the 3050mAh battery out of the sky. A discount of 60% or 70% in everyone's mind should be similar to the actual performance.

In fact, the so-called Hifi 2.0 at the press conference only adds independent circuits and NXP transistors, which will improve the sound quality, but it is estimated that it will not be too big. It is a bit excessive to call Hifi 2.0.

In order to highlight the dignity of PRO, its system can automatically identify PRO users, provide a dedicated 7 * 24 customer service team, provide remote technical support services mSupport, and free on-site maintenance, which sounds more conscientious.

"Weibao" spherical robot

Meizu routing mini

Together with the launch of a "Webao" spherical robot, which cooperates with Tencent, and Meizu router, which has been exposed many times. The former is still just a toy, which can be remotely controlled by mobile phone and waterproof, but the price of 649 yuan is obviously on the high side; The latter is a mini router that supports up to 433Mbps and can be directly plugged into the socket. The 2.4G version costs 99 yuan, the 5Gwifi version costs 169 yuan, and the Meizu mobile phones cost 69 yuan and 119 yuan respectively.

Soho II NC Active Noise Reduction Headset Set

Manhattan sound package

Finally, the price is announced. The 3GB memory+32GB storage version is 2799 yuan, and the 4GB memory+64GB storage version is 3099 yuan. The rest of the Manhattan sound package is 3798/4098 yuan, and the Soho II NC active noise reduction headset package is 3398/3698 yuan. In other words, that set of audio sold for 1000 yuan, and noise reduction earphones sold for 600 yuan. Faced with this price, the author can only hehe.

To sum up, PRO5 is a powerful CPU with screens that perform far below average. In addition to infrared remote control, NFC、 Fast charging, fingerprint recognition and other flagship configurations are available.

Compared with the flagship version of Xiaomi Note, the 2799 yuan price of the machine itself has certain advantages. But compared with the 2000 yuan Xiaomi Note MX5、 For products such as Glory 7, the improvement is not obvious, and the screen retrogression is obvious. In addition, when the S6 of BOC Telecom is close to the 3000 yuan mark, it is hard to figure out why to go to PRO 5
