Dell XPS13 2015 is the best designed notebook computer today. Its ultra narrow border design has the most amazing appearance today. Dell has a 13 inch screen in its 11 inch fuselage. If you want to know how Dell designed such an amazing XPS13 2015, please follow our disassembly pictures and texts to see exactly. (The following pictures are from iFixit)
Let's take a look at the parameters of Dell XPS 13
Because of the ultra narrow border, the camera is designed at the lower left corner of the display screen.
Dell made the XPS13 only the size of an ordinary 11 inch notebook through the ultra narrow border design.
Let's take the Macbook Air 13 as an example. It is also 13.3 inches. The XPS13 is a whole circle smaller than the MBA.
There is no warning indication or model information at the bottom of XPS13 But what about the logo of XPS?
Open this. The XPS13 signboard hides FCC, model information and service identification.
We will start from the back and use T5 screwdriver to remove all the screws. There are nine T5 screws.
Then slowly pry the snap along the edge of the gap with a paddle, and we open the back cover.
The shell is made of aluminum alloy. The huge battery occupies most of the space in the fuselage. The cooling system of XPS13 consists of heat pipe and a fan. The interior design is very similar to the Macbook Air.
It is not easy to pry the battery cable from the socket. You need to use tweezers carefully to pry the cable from the socket.
The speaker wire is stuck on the side of the battery, which prevents us from removing the battery. We can take out the battery only after removing the wire. It seems that there are some problems with the design of XPS.
As for the screws, the labels clearly remind us which screws need to be removed. There are four screws on the battery.
Dell XPS 13 uses a four cell, 7.4V, 52Wh battery, which can officially run for up to 11 hours. (2014 Macbook Air is equipped with 54Wh battery)
After the battery is removed, the speaker can be easily removed, and the speaker can be removed by unplugging the flat cable.
The left and right speakers are connected by wires.
Remove the screws on the SSD, and we can remove the SSD hard disk. The XPS13 uses a 128 GB PM851 SSD hard disk with Samsung M.2 interface.
Red: 2 × Samsung 431 K9CHGY8S5M-CCK0 64 GBTLC NAND flash memory chip
Orange: Samsung 428 K4P2G324ED - FGC2 512 MB DRAM LPDDR2 cache
Yellow: Samsung S4LN045X01-8030 MDX controller
Use tweezers to remove the grounding bracket that secures the wireless network card.
Dell uses Broadcom DW1560 wireless network card, including Wi Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 functions
Red: Broadcom BCM4352KML 5G WiFi 802.11ac transceiver
Orange: Broadcom BCM20702 Bluetooth 4.0 module
Yellow: Skyworks SE5516 dual band 802.11a/b/g/n/ac WLAN module
XPS13 adopts the heat dissipation design of single fan and single copper tube. It looks like the 2014 MacBook Air.
In the past two years, Intel has reduced the heat output of processors. We can see that the heat sink is becoming smaller. The thermal design power consumption of the i5-5200U used in the XPS 13 is only 15 watts.
Tear off the tape, and the flat cable connecting the DC power interface and the motherboard is hidden below. Unplug the flat cable.
Unplug the button battery on the motherboard.
Remove the screen cable. Dell has reserved a handle on the screen cable for removal.
Unplug the flat cable of the SD card reader and touch control board, and unplug the connection cable of the fan.
Now we can finally remove the motherboard.
After taking out the motherboard, let's take a look at the chip on it:
Red: the fifth generation Intel Core i5-5200U processor (Remax can reach 2.70 GHz)&Intel HD5500 graphics card
Orange: Huabang 25Q64FVS10 64 M-bit serial flash memory
Yellow: Microchip MCP23017 16 bit I/O port expander
Green: Texas Instruments CSD97374Q4M high frequency synchronous buck NexFET power stage
Sky blue: Texas Instruments CSD87330Q3D synchronous buck NexFET power module
Dark blue: Texas Instruments TPS51624 4.5 V to 28V, 1/2-phase step down driverless controller
Purple: ANPEC APW8813/A DDR2&DDR3 power solution 1.5 A LDO synchronous step-down controller
The reverse side of the motherboard is:
Red: Elpida/Meguiar J8416E6MB-GNL-F 8 GB (eight 1 GB) DDR3L-RS 1600 MHz dual channel memory (note: the memory chip is soldered on the motherboard and cannot be replaced)
Orange: Ruiyu ALC3263 audio codec
Yellow: SMSC MEC5085 low-power embedded flash memory
Green: Texas Instruments SN74CBT3257C 4-bit 1-of-2 FET multiplexer/demultiplexer, 5 V bus switch
Blue: ON Semiconductor NCP4545 controlledload switch
Now you can take down the fan, which is a 5V 0.5A ultra silent centrifugal cooling fan.
Dell screwed the fixing tape of the screen cable onto the screw that secures the SD card reader module.
After some disassembly, we finally removed the SD card reader module and the circuit board.
Yellow: Paradie PS8713B single port USB 3.0 transponder/docking drive
Remove the connecting board between the keyboard and the motherboard. The XPS may be connected to the motherboard through some small connecting boards and flat cables because the motherboard is too small and many components are not integrated on the motherboard.
Now start removing the screen. Unscrew the screw on the rotating shaft, and we can remove the whole screen.
Remove the shaft baffle. The new XPS13 and Macbook Pro adopt the same design. The antenna is hidden here.
We heated around the screen to soften the glue for disassembly.
Use a pick to pry the screen slowly along the gaps around the screen.
Slowly detach the screen. The glue is very firm. If it is difficult to disassemble, please heat the screen edge again.
Continue to slowly separate the screen from the metal panel below. The screen glass is very thin. Please be careful not to use too much force. The screen is easy to break.
After removing the screen, we can finally see the camera. Because of the design of the ultra narrow frame, the camera cannot be accommodated in other positions of the frame, so Dell installed it in the lower left corner of the screen. The location is slightly inconvenient in actual use, and Dell is expected to improve the design in the next generation.
After removing the display screen, we found that it was a display provided by Sharp. The screen touch control chip is located in the center of the screen, the display circuit is located at the bottom of the screen, and the circuit board is covered by aluminum foil.
Tear off the aluminum foil, and we can see the display control circuit. The model is Novatek NT71394MB8 displaydriver IC.
Well, our disassembly is finally completed, and finally we have a family photo. The iFixit gave the XPS13 7 points for maintenance, which is very excellent. As a leading portable notebook, this score is very difficult. The iFixit gave the 2015 Macbook Pro only 1 point. The XPS13 is extremely thin and light with an ultra narrow frame. It also gives consideration to the performance. It is indeed a business notebook with excellent design.
