The strongest night shot contest, Samsung S6 edge/LG G4/Nokia 1020 night shot horizontal review
The strongest night shot contest, Samsung S6 edge/LG G4/Nokia 1020 night shot horizontal review

This is the competition of the strongest night shot. In fact, there are only three participants: S6 edge, LG G4 and the legendary Nokia 1020. The remaining LG G3 Moto X Pro、 Sony Z2 and Xiaomi 4 are only added as reference models. The main contrast is still discrimination/sharpness, followed by noise control, white balance and photometry.

explain

Among the seven models, LG G3、 13 million pixels for Xiaomi 4 and Moto X Pro; S6 edge and LG G4 are 16 million pixels; Sony Z2 is 20.7 million pixels (Z3 is represented by Z2 because of the cost of the lens).

It should be noted that Lumia 1020, although its CMOS is 41 million pixels, actually produces a maximum output of 38 million pixels (7152 * 5360) of the original DNG film. At the same time, it also generates a 5 million pixel JPG photo, and the mapping software cannot process such a large sample. Therefore, the whole image below is compared with a 5 million pixel sample, while the details are compared with a partial magnified screenshot of a 38 million pixel sample.

remind

It is recommended to use "ctrl+mouse wheel" to enlarge the webpage to 170% - 200% (ctrl+0 can restore the original proportion). Although the use experience is still very poor, at least I can barely see the name in the upper left corner of the sample... Click the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of the image to view the "original image".

All proofs are centered, The samples are always the same, from left to right, from top to bottom, G3 S6 edge、 Nokia 1020 LG G4; Three parts below Sony Z2, Xiaomi 4 Moto X Pro。

Metering and white balance

Here we just look at the color (white balance) and brightness of the picture.

Indoor lighting scene. From left to right, from top to bottom, they are G3 S6 edge、 Nokia 1020 LG G4

Sony Z2, Xiaomi 4 Moto X Pro。 In addition to Xiaomi 4, the white balance of the indoor lighting of the other six machines is relatively accurate, and the gap is not large. The G4 is the closest to the actual situation.

Scene 2, outdoor dim light

Scene 3, outdoor lighting

Under the yellow street light, the G3 white balance directly drifted out of the sky, and the Sony Z2 was not much better... The original yellow Xiaomi 4 performed well instead. Other machines have similar white balance under street lights, while the Nokia 1020 is the closest to what the naked eye can see.

Scene 4, ultra weak light

From left to right, from top to bottom, they are G3 S6 edge、 Nokia 1020 LG G4。 The most accurate photometry is S6E, and the sample brightness is the closest to the naked eye; The brightness of G3 and 1020 is slightly lower than that of the naked eye, while the brightness of G4 is slightly higher.

It is worth noting that 1020 is extremely poor in photographing experience, but even in night shooting, its tolerance is also abnormal. The other three films also trigger the night scene mode to have such performance.

Z2, m4 Moto X Pro, In this extreme case, it is cannon fodder, and ISO is almost not enough when fully opened

Discriminative power&noise control

The rest is the discrimination that I care most about, After that, there is no need for the author to make a blind comparison. The gap between models is still very obvious.

Normal light

Scene 1 zooms in at the center. Sharpening LG and moto "lost" the green dot in the red box at the lower right corner

Zoom in below the center of Scene 1. Although the 1020 picture is surprisingly rich in details, the noise of the original DNG film affects the appearance too much. Sony Z2's performance was unexpectedly poor, just a little better than the smudged Xiaomi 4.

Scene 2 zooms in at the center. When the light is weaker, Z2 will wither completely. Xiaomi 4 can kill it, but 1020 is still too strong.

Scene 2 Enlarge to the left in the center

Scene 3 zooms in at the center. LG G3/G4 has demonstrated amazing photo control/smudging ability, with clean and natural pictures, and G4 still retains picture details second only to 1020.

Scene 3 Zoom in at the top of the center

Scene 4 zooms in at the center. The 1020 is still killing all living beings, but in the normal model, only the G4 and S6 edge are playing.

Scene 4 Zoom in below the center

Sony Z2, Xiaomi 4 Moto X Pro

I seldom complain about the glare control of the machine at ordinary times, but the lens performance of Sony Z2 is really complained about. When I shoot the light, I am blinded. Fortunately, when we went to Z3+, Sony finally changed the lens glass of conscience.

Scene 5 zooms in on the right in the center.

Scene 7 zooms in at the center. At low light, 1020 was caught by G4/S6, and the sharpness of G4 was quite fierce.

Scene 9 Central zoom in

Scene 9 Zoom in above the center

Scene 10 zooms in at the center. It's G4's turn to destroy all living beings under ultra weak light. Even G3 has a very good performance. The 1020 of Nuoji is just a loser here. The following investigation group was blasted to the ground.

Scene 10 Zoom in below the center

Scene 11 Central zoom in

Scene 12 zooms in at the center. With this luminosity and distance, only G4 and 1020 can be photographed with more than 10 floors of cabinet details, even S6 is a little reluctant.

The strongest fight: S6 edge VS G4

Considering that 1020 has been withdrawn from the market and the poor photo taking experience, the strongest night camera can only be used in S6 edge and G4 are selected.

Metering, white balance and contrast

S6 edge on the left and G4 on the right

S6 edge is a strictly realistic reductive system. The photometry/picture brightness is almost the same as that seen by the naked eye, while G4 photometry is inclined to be slightly brighter.

The white balance of the two machines is very accurate, but there is a slight difference in color preference. S6 edge is slightly red and green, while G4 is slightly yellow and green.

In terms of pleasing the eyeball, the S6 edge sample with richer color and higher saturation is obviously more pleasing. When compared together, G4 proofs appear to lack contrast, as if covered with a layer of gray.

Discriminative power&noise control

Normal light

Automatic mode

Manual mode

The focus of the image above is this tree. The automatic night view mode of G4 is very sensitive. When the ISO of S6 edge on the left is only 640, it has triggered the night view mode, and the exif information is lost.

In the automatic mode, the details in the center of the G4 picture are better, and the noise is wiped clean, which is quite violent.

However, the performance of G4 in the lower left corner, which is slightly away from the center, is reversed by S6. It is estimated that because the shutter is too slow, the machine performs anti shake compensation, sacrificing the clarity near the focus.

Manual mode, zoom in at the lower left corner. S6 manual mode can only reach 100 ISO at least, and G4 can be pressed to 50. In addition, G4's optical anti shake can still keep the 1/2s shutter proof in a certain degree of clarity even when it is held in hand, which is amazing.

G4 is still racing ISO here. When S6 on the left is only 320, it is already 1100. This directly leads to the fact that the discrimination and details in this sample sheet are not as good as S6. But in terms of noise control, S6 is still badly abused.

Zoom in at the bottom right of the center

Sample central magnification

When the ISO of both sides are close, the discrimination of G4 is strong. Although the contrast is not high at first glance, the details are excellent.

Weak light and ultra weak light

The noise reduction algorithm of G4 is incredibly strong. You should know that when compared with the iPhone 6 Plus, the noise reduction ability of S6 also beats the iPhone 6 Plus

But in fact, in terms of picture details, they are still inseparable. But the first impression of G4 is really better after being magnified.

summary

Compared with the night scene of the two computers, S6 edge is better at metering, white balance and higher saturation, and it is better at a distance (mainly the contrast); While G4 wins in the performance of violent noise reduction algorithm and sharpness, and performs better at zooming in details.

  • Before directly comparing S6 edge with LG G4, the author was also moved by G4's amazing noise reduction and anti shake ability. its Sharpness, which can directly compete with 1020 in many scenes, can capture dark details far beyond the naked eye in extremely weak light.

  • The metering and white balance of S6 edge are closer to the naked eye, but the dark details may be lost. Compared with other models, its noise reduction ability is quite good, but it is still some distance from the G4. Its picture details are similar to those of G4, but the magnified appearance and sharpness are quite different.

The other protagonist, Nuoji 1020, is still abusing the G4 and S6 edge, as long as it is not in the ultra weak light even without street lights. However, its photography experience is extremely poor. The weak light shutter is always 1/4s, and the imaging takes 4 or 5s. The DNG original film is huge and needs to be adjusted by itself, and it is also the WP system @ # ¥% #% ¥ #@# ¥……

The ranking of the remaining night shots is: LG G3>Moto X Pro>Sony Z2>Xiaomi 4

In the strongest competition, the score crowd said: for ordinary users, S6 edge has a better first impression, fast focusing and imaging, and better experience, but the details are poor; For this kind of magnified Maoist party, the G4 is undoubtedly the most powerful flagship machine to take photos now, whether it is day or night (related to interests: the author is moved by sharpness again).
