Rumor dispelling: Microsoft has shut down Nokia factories in mainland China, but the number of layoffs has not reached 9000

According to some media reports, Microsoft plans to shut down its Dongguan and Beijing Nokia factories, which will cut a total of 9000 jobs. The production equipment of these two factories will be transported to the factory in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The closure of domestic Nokia factories is almost certain, but the number of layoffs may be exaggerated. Looking back at the data, Microsoft announced its plan to cut 18000 employees worldwide in July 2014. Because Microsoft took over Nokia, the closure news of Nokia factories in China came out at the end of December 2014.

Interestingly, however, according to public reports, Nokia's manufacturing plant in Beijing has only about 3000 employees, while its manufacturing plant in Dongguan has only about 600 employees. In August 2014, about 1500 research and development employees of Nokia in Beijing left. Therefore, the so-called 9000 layoffs in some media should be exaggerated (including the upstream and downstream supply chain personnel?)

In addition, by the way, Microsoft's global layoff plan is expected to be completed before June 30, 2015.
