Manta is a mobile phone manufacturer that only appeared in the public at the end of January this year. Its newly launched Manta 7x boasts that it is the first keyless mobile phone in the world. It also adds its self-developed smart border and 41pin interface.

The Manta 7x is packaged in a pure white paper box, with a large product name on the front and simple product information on the back.

 

The mechanical structure of the package is very exquisite. The buckle at the bottom is equipped with a magnet, which can be used to pull out the inner box.


 

After taking it out, it also acts as the handle of the cover plate. When the carrier plate is raised, it will tilt and lift the phone, and the whole process will be completed in one go.

 

Manual, warranty, charger, data cable and card taking pin, Manta 7x uses self-developed 41pin interface, so two adapters are attached.

 

 

Compared with the 4200mAh of the machine, the specification of 5V1A charger is obviously insufficient, and the charging time is estimated to exceed 4 hours.

 

One of the adapters can only be used for charging or data transmission. It is connected to the mirco USB cable and is equipped with an anti folding rack.

 

 

The left and right sides of the other connector are 3.5mm headphone connector and mirco USB connector.

 

 

The front of the Manta 7x is a bit like the Nexus 5. The forehead and chin are not short, but the frame is narrow, and the screen size has dropped to 74.96%.

 

The most prominent one on the top is the huge camera, and on the right is the well received light and distance sensor, as well as the short earpiece. There is a round breathing lamp in the middle of the bottom of the completely black screen, and the two sides of the breathing lamp are also touch areas.


The upper and lower edges of the screen and the edge of the camera have been polished with 2.5D, with obvious radians. The screen surface is coated with DLC diamond film whose hardness is close to sapphire glass.

 

The back of the fuselage is a three segment design, and the two lines in the middle are actually the antenna partition layer on the magnesium aluminum alloy fuselage.

 

The left side of the top is a dual color temperature flash and camera, and the lower side is a noise reduction microphone. The layout is different from that of ordinary mobile phones. The speaker is on the lower left corner.

 

The fuselage is a double-layer structure. The plastic frame on the upper layer can reduce the chance of screen shattering, while the lower layer is a metal fuselage with CNC chamfers at the joints. Only sim card slot is placed on the top of the fuselage.



There is only a 41pin customized interface at the bottom of the machine. The official name is Duckbill. It is said that it can improve the data reading speed and has applied for a patent. Next to the connector are two rough screws and two openings for suspected noise reduction microphones.

This design simplifies the interface for Virgo, and brings IP55 waterproof and dustproof grade to the machine, but also brings the side effect of external adapter.

 

 

The smooth area on the two sides is actually a touchpad. Its official name is Smart Border. It is also an important selling point of manta7x, which is used to complete palm sensing and shortcut operations.

In addition, the thickness of the fuselage is only 9.8mm, which is at the same level as many domestic flagship ships. However, due to the addition of smart frames on both sides, the machine does not perform the common arc trimming, making it look thicker.


It is true that there is no button on the surface of the machine body, but there is a power button under the touch panel in the upper right corner for restarting and starting. This design is relatively novel.


The machine screen is 5.5 inches, and the edges are rounded. However, the machine has a large 4200 mAh battery and weighs up to 200 g, so it is still very powerful.



Systems and special operations

The machine is equipped with a customized Android system called "MO7 OS", which is different from native Android in use experience, and is also one of the important selling points of the machine.


Manta 7x is equipped with MO7 OS, which is deeply customized based on Android 4.4. Android can hardly be seen on the surface of the system. The most "Android flavor" reserved is the setting menu, which only has more control items for the smart border and control center than the regular ones.


Smart border and touchkey

The biggest difference between the manta 7x and normal mobile phones is that there are no buttons on the body, and a large touch area is added on the two sides and the bottom of the front. However, there is a power button hidden under the touch panel at the upper right corner of the fuselage for switching on and restarting.


The smart frame is a touch version. When touched by a finger, it will emit fluorescence at the corresponding screen edge. When the finger moves up, the fluorescence will turn orange. After a pause, wait for the halo to become larger, and then release it to execute the return operation.


Move your finger down and it will turn green. After a pause, the fluorescence will be enlarged. At this time, click to call up the sidebar.


Sliding the border up and down can switch in the application of the sidebar. Click to enter, and double-click to return. In addition to conventional phone, SMS, camera, settings and other shortcuts, the most conscientious thing here is that third-party applications can be "included" and automatically sorted according to the frequency of use.

 

On both sides of the breathing light at the bottom of the machine is a touch area called touchkey, which carries many advanced shortcut functions:

  • Double click to call up the volume adjustment button directly;

  • Rowing on the breath lamp can perform the return action, which is a bit similar to Meizu's flyme;

  • If the breathing lamp slides right, the screen will turn off;

  • When the screen is off, you can wake up the screen by sliding left and right on both sides of the breathing lamp. You don't need the power key at all in daily life.

The desktop is a rare dual main interface design. The left side is made into a contact interface, and the right side is the application home page.

 

The contact interface supports icon and list display, and displays the user's operation records. Drag down to call up dialing, adding contacts, changing sorting and other function buttons, and pull down again to call up the search toolbar.


Dialing and contact applications have their own levitation effect, which can drag the position and change the size at will, and track and move the user's thumb position with the smart border.

In addition, when users exchange left and right hands, the frame can judge the user's hand posture, so that the dial can automatically move to the position of the user's thumb, greatly improving the machine's one handed control. When the number is entered, the contact recommendation results will be displayed in real time on the right side.

The application interface is vertically sliding, and now it seems that only HTC is left in the large factory adopting the same scheme. Pull down to directly enter the half screen mode. It is convenient to click the program at the top. Pull down again to call up the search box.


Continue to slide left and right on both sides of the desktop to call up the desktop sidebar. You can change the sorting method and view the weather and friend notifications.


At the top of the notice bar is a shortcut switch that can be slid left and right, and below it is the volume adjustment slider. There is a QR code shortcut key in the shortcut button. Long press the button to pop up a detailed setting page below, which can directly control the brightness and wifi connection. It is convenient to use.


The task interface is card style, which supports sliding up and down to close tasks and one click cleaning, but it is used to add task locking and white list functions. Another detail is that the virtual button at the bottom can be hidden directly by sliding to the right, which is very considerate.

Have to say, Although the operation logic is not complex The full touch operation without keys does require some learning costs, and In order to prevent misoperation, the system needs to wait for the halo amplification prompt when calling out the sidebar, which affects the operation speed.

However, considering that the original intention of the sidebar is only to deal with those scenes where only one hand is free, the focus is more on whether it can be operated than on efficiency and speed. In this view, this solution is actually good.

The touchkeys on both sides of the lower breathing light are estimated to be two independent keys, and the action is triggered by touching the keys in the gap, so if you slow down, you may not be able to respond. However, after getting used to it, you can quickly operate it instead of locking/opening the screen with the physical power key. There is no sense of fracture between the physical key switching to the touch screen control. In fact, the use experience is better than the physical key.

After getting familiar with it, the overall experience of the system is quite comfortable. The author still supports the innovation and maturity of manufacturers. However, in the current version, users are required to go to the "Help" application to check the use method in person, and there is no operation prompt or explanation during the use process, which may cause inconvenience to many users.

The manta 7x is equipped with Sharp's 5.5 inch 1920x1080 screen. Officially, it is equipped with a technology called hi colour to expand the traditional LED backlight from blue yellow to red green blue, which can make the screen have better color reproduction ability.

In principle, IPS screen controls the gray level through the liquid crystal layer, filters light through the color polarizer, and enhances the color gamut of the backlight module (i.e. the light source), which can directly improve the color performance of the screen.

In the actual comparison, Samsung S5, Xiaomi 4 and Meizu MX4 Pro are used for comparison, among which Samsung S5 is equipped with something famous for its bright colors (oversaturation) Super AMOLED screen, while MX4 Pro uses a color gamut and contrast enhancement Nega negative liquid crystal technology, while Xiaomi 4 is equipped with NTSC gamut up to 84% JDI screen. It can be said that these three products are at the top of their respective positions, and it is excellent to catch up with their performance alone.



First is the brightness test. The 100% brightness shows white. The Samsung S5 is 299 nits, the Xiaomi 4 is 494 nits, and the Meizu MX4 Pro's 2K screen is up to 541 nits, while the manta 7x's screen is also up to 506 nits.

 

From left to right, and from top to bottom, there are Samsung S5, Xiaomi 4, Meizu MX4 Pro and manta 7x. The unified 100% brightness displays white. The Samsung S5 and manta 7x screens are slightly red, the Xiaomi 4 is slightly blue and cold, and the MX4 Pro is slightly yellow.


100% brightness shows black. Screen A of S5 is really pure black. Xiaomi4 and manta 7x both have slight light leakage and are slightly red. The MX4 Pro with a negative LCD screen is more pure black, but still has slight light leakage.



In terms of three primary colors, the manta 7x in the lower right corner is very eye-catching in terms of blue performance, which is close to Samsung S5, red , green Is sandwiched between the Mi4 and MX4 Pro.


The hair color trend of manta 7x is the closest to the high color gamut screen of Xiaomi 4, and the screen hair color is slightly yellow.

In the big corner, the screen of MX4 Pro has a more obvious brightness attenuation with the increase of angle; Although the brightness of manta 7x has little change, it also appears reddish phenomenon; However, Xiaomi 4 showed obvious brightness fluctuation on the death diagonal.

In general, although the screen of manta 7x is slightly yellow and red at a large angle, its overall performance is close to that of flagship brands such as Mi4 and MX4Pro, and there are also mutual wins and losses in terms of color saturation and visual angle. Its hi colour technology does have a more obvious role in improving the color gamut.

The manta 7x is the mobile phone with the most balanced front and rear camera parameters, except for the Meitu mobile phone and OPPO N3, which are characterized by self portraits. When there is sufficient light in the daytime and indoor lighting, the IMX214 of manta 7x shows good discrimination, and has good tolerance even in the backlight. When the center is magnified to 100%, the branches of distant trees and details on the keyboard can still be seen.


room In the interior and outdoor weak light, the default algorithm of the machine maintains low sensitivity and low shutter speed by default to ensure the brightness purity of the image, resulting in a lower brightness than the naked eye, but the details are still rich.


What was more unexpected in the test was the macro performance of the machine. The actual macro distance was about 5cm, and the large aperture of f2.0 could make a good background illusion effect, which could be so close. For the reading and writing speed test, the scores will affect the loading speed of large files and software.


It is a GPU test, and its performance will affect the performance of the game and screen fluency.

The CPU performance is weaker than that of the Orion 5422 of the Samsung S5, but the GPU performance is stronger. Beating the high price and low configuration Mate7 is more pressure free.


In actual use, after turning on the GPU to present curves, the smoothness performance of the manta 7x is still good, but the yellow line has been maintained at a high position. The situation is very similar to that of the previously evaluated motoX, but their curves rarely break through the green 60 frame warning line, and the actual experience does not feel stuck at all.


The Adreno 330 GPU of Snapdragon 801 drives 1080P to be very happy, and games such as Top Speed 17 can still run full frames with all special effects turned on. Moreover, the compatibility of the classic configuration is good, and you can play the mainstream large-scale games without Yali.


Endurance&Heat&Release

The power of manta 7x is up to 4200mAh, while the screen is "only" 5.5 inches. In terms of endurance, it should be able to compete with Huawei mate7. But the power consumption of Snapdragon 801 with full power is not a fuel saving light. After playing five rounds of top flight cars in a row, the power consumption has gone from 9% to 30% per hour. Playing games in a row can last more than three hours at most, which is far worse than expected.



The reading power consumption (30% brightness wifi connection) is 5.5% - 6% per hour, which can last for 17-18 hours.


When Wifi is turned on in flight mode, the standby power consumption is about 0.38% per hour. The pure standby can last for 11 days. The performance is good, and it is close to the tablet.


In terms of charging speed, it takes more than 4 hours to fully charge with the original 5V1A charger, while with the fast charging charger (supporting 9V1.6A), the maximum charging speed can reach 42% per hour, but the speed cannot be maintained for a long time. Finally, it takes 3 hours to fully charge. It can only be said that the 4100mah large capacity battery has indeed extended the charging time.


After 10 minutes of continuous operation of a large game, the highest temperature on the front of the machine can exceed 40.7 degrees, while the metal temperature on the back is also 37.8 degrees. However, the heat transfer on the back of the metal fuselage is fast, and the fuselage is obviously hot at 37.8 degrees. Fortunately, however, the heat is concentrated on the top of the fuselage, which would not be felt unless playing games.


In addition, the heat dissipation of the machine is extremely fast, and the front temperature has dropped to 37.8 degrees in less than one minute after exiting the game.


The 87.6 decibels external volume of the machine is enough to ensure no missed calls in downtown areas, while the sound quality is standard, the sound is cold and sharp, and the metal taste is strong, suitable for rock, hiphop and other music.

Thanks to today's mature mobile phone industry chain, even the first work, the performance of the manta 7x is completely true and flagship in terms of screen, performance and endurance. Although it has not yet been debugged, the performance of the dual optical anti shake IMX214 camera is not bad.

In terms of system, the smart borders on both sides and the bottom touchkey With new functions such as thumb dial on the thumb desk, the usability and freshness are worth praising, but the appearance design of the fuselage is commercial and weighs 200g, which may not meet the aesthetic standards of many users.
