Detailed evaluation of the endurance monster Motorola Droid Turbo
Detailed evaluation of the endurance monster Motorola Droid Turbo

If you want to count today's Android phones, you may think of Galaxy Note 4, G Flex 2, and Nexus 6. In fact, Motorola has another Droid Turbo besides the Six Prince Nexus 6. Its hardware specifications are quite powerful. This time we bring you a detailed evaluation of this machine:

This time we are evaluating the American version of the Droid Turbo (the international version is called MOTO Maxx), which is a customized machine of Verizon, an American operator. It is a black ballistic nylon cloth version (only 64G Rom).

The above is the parameter comparison between Droid Turbo and Nexus 6.

We won't describe the unpacking process in detail here. Interested friends can see our hands-on video:

appearance

The front of the Droid Turbo has a strong Motorola style. Unlike MOTO X and MOTO G series, the Droid Turbo still retains three touch buttons. Although the Droid Turbo has a small body size, it has a large battery of 3900mAh, so the body weight is up to 176g, and the maximum thickness is 11.2mm (169g for the non nylon back cover version, 10.6mm at the maximum thickness), so the whole machine is relatively heavy, and it is a "heavyweight" player compared with the mobile phone with the same screen size.

There is an exaggerated earpiece on the top. In fact, the earpiece also acts as the external speaker of the mobile phone. There is a central 2.1 megapixel front camera on the top of the fuselage.

The loudspeakers can reach a maximum volume of 95dB or more, which is believed to be sufficient to meet the general ringing demand. Of course, it is not recommended to use it to play square dance music.

There are light sensor and distance sensor on the left side of front camera.

The Droid Turbo still maintains the touch key design, with the return key on the left, the home key in the middle, and the multitask key on the right. In addition, the Droid Turbo is also equipped with two communication microphones, which are quite special.

The Droid Turbo uses the popular 2.5D glass. In other words, it is also a "film killer".

The frame adopts a skin like coating, and the whole machine adopts a streamlined and asymmetrical design.

There is a micro USB interface at the bottom of the fuselage, and the bottom of the fuselage is relatively sharp relative to the top, giving a feeling of "big head and small body".

There is a 3.5mm headphone connector on the top and a circle of electroplated plastic frame on the front panel.

There are power key and volume key on the right side of the phone.

You may think it is a bit strange that the Droid Turbo can not remove the rear cover, and there is no card slot on the body. In fact, its card holder and volume key are integrated, which is a rare design. We can pull out the card holder at the position of the volume key on the back of the phone.

We got the black 64G ballistic nylon version of the Droid Turbo. This is the first time this material is used on a mobile phone, and the texture is very special.

A close-up of ballistic nylon cloth. Although this material looks very personalized, the abrasion resistance of nylon is still worrying. Long term use is likely to "fuzz".

The Droid Turbo uses a rear 21 megapixel camera with two LED fill lights on each side of the camera, but it is not two-color.

The logo of "Droid" is on the bottom, and the capacity of the fuselage is marked on the lower right corner. It looks very exquisite.

The Droid Turbo is Motorola's second 2K mobile phone (the first is the Nexus 6). It has a 5.2 inch 2560 * 1440 QHD AMOLED screen, and the screen panel is made by Samsung. It is worth noting that this screen is different from the one on the Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A. Although the resolution of the two screens is the same, the screen size of the latter is 5.1 inches. Now let's learn some features of this screen.

Due to the sharp increase in resolution, although the Droid Turbo still uses Pentile arranged screens, its screen fineness can meet the needs of most users. Compared with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (5.7-inch 2560 * 1440 Super AMOLED), the color temperature of the Droid Turbo is cooler.

In contrast to the bright color system, the green of the Droid Turbo is obviously more bright. The Galaxy Note 4 with Super AMOLED has a much higher color standard (upper Droid Turbo, lower Note 4).

Original drawing.

Bright color system, we can see that there is a big difference between the two in color temperature.

Original drawing.

In contrast to the red system, the red color of the Droid Turbo is particularly bright, while the color of the Galaxy Note 4 is darker (upper Droid Turbo, lower Note 4).

Original drawing.

The black contrast of the Galaxy Note 4 is much better than that of the Droid Turbo. You can see 3 clearly, but the Droid Turbo is barely able to reach 5.

White contrast, both can reach the level of 253, regardless of the level.

Finally, let's take a look at the soft spot of AMOLED screen - brightness. Under normal circumstances, the Droid Turbo manually adjusts the maximum brightness. The screen brightness is only 230cd/m2, which is very different from other flagship products.

Like Samsung's Super AMOLED phones, the Droid Turbo will turn on the "plug-in" when using the automatic brightness mode under strong light, and the screen brightness will soar to 340cd/㎡. Although such brightness will not be "blind" outdoors, it is not enough to meet our requirements. Samsung's 2K Super AMOLED can reach a maximum of about 320 cd/㎡ in manual mode, while it can reach a maximum of about 440 cd/㎡ in automatic mode.

From the above simple comparisons, the quality of the Droid Turbo's screen is still much weaker than that of Samsung's products in the same period. However, it is understandable that Samsung has used excellent screen panels in its own products. Compared with "Lei Feng Xia" Sony, Samsung's approach is more selfish... Motorola in MOTO X The Droid Turbo and Nexus 6 all use AMOLED screens, but there is still a big gap between screen quality and mainstream flagship phones.

System and UI

Before the deadline, the latest Droid Turbo system was still in Android 4.4.4, but according to MOTO's "good tradition", it will soon be upgraded to the latest Android 5.0. Motorola's system does not have much in-depth customization. It can basically be considered that it uses a native Android solution, so we will not introduce it in detail here.

On the lock screen interface, slide the unlock button at the bottom to unlock.

The system launcher retains the secondary menu. The only change compared with native Android is the addition of a dynamic weather plug-in, which can provide temperature, time and percentage of power.

The secondary menu of the system adopts a layout of 24 palaces.

Since the Droid Turbo is a customized machine for operators, it is inevitable that many customized applications are pre installed, which have no effect on domestic users, and cannot be uninstalled without root.

For example, Verizon Messages is the SMS application of the operator, which is seriously duplicated with the SMS function of the system itself

The folder under the launcher is displayed. Because Droid Turbo still uses Android 4.4.4, the folder is not displayed in full screen.

Pull down the shortcut switch of 9 grids.

Multi task management. You can close tasks by sliding left and right. There is no one click button to clear tasks.

The system setting menu is no different from native Android, but some Motorola customized setting options have been added.

The system uses Android 4.4.4, the system kernel version 3.10.40, and the Droid Turbo uses Qualcomm MDM9625 baseband. This baseband is quite powerful. In theory, it supports CDMA2000 (1X Adv/EV-DO Rev. A/B), GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS (WCDMA/TD-SCDMA), LTE (LTE-FDD/LTE-TDD) and other network systems. It supports the highest LTE Cat. 4. Of course, this is just a theory. Just look at it

For domestic users, Droid Turbo supports Unicom's 4G and 3G networks, as well as CDMA and GSM networks. Telecom users need to crack to use 4G networks.

The Droid Turbo supports the NFC function, which is almost a standard feature for current flagship computers.

The Droid Turbo also supports 802.11ac WiFi, which is often referred to as "5GHz WiFi". This is now the standard feature of high-end mobile phones.

There is an option named "MOTO" in the settings. Click it to set some body feeling and auxiliary functions of the Droid Turbo.

Open "Operation", you can select the function of Moto display. When you approach the phone in the locked screen state, you can view the time and notice (for specific demonstration, you can click the video at the beginning of the article).

Open "Display" to make more settings for lock screen notification.

When there is a notification from the system, we can display the time and system notification by holding our hand close to the phone in the locked screen state.

Droid Zap is also one of Motorola's customized applications. It allows users using Droid to transmit shared content to each other. For domestic users, this function is of little significance.

Motorola connect is an application that allows mobile phones and PCs to send and receive messages synchronously. However, the biggest problem is that it relies on Google services. For many domestic users, it is also a rather poor function... Maybe WeChat PC client will be more suitable for us.

For the Droid Turbo, its system can basically be understood as native Android, because its changes are too few. Of course, the function of MOTO's lock screen close to automatic wake-up is worth our affirmation.

performance

The powerful feature of Droid Turbo's configuration is that it uses 2K screen, Snapdragon 805, 3G Ram, 21 million pixels and other configurations. It is also one of the few mobile phones that use Snapdragon 805 (the other are Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A, G3 Cat. 6, Galaxy Note 4 and Nexus 6). We also test its performance.

The Droid Turbo uses the Snapdragon 805 (APQ8084) quad core processor, with the main frequency up to 2649MHz. The CPU core is Krait 450 developed by Qualcomm itself, manufactured by 28nm process, and the GPU is Adreno 420 of Qualcomm, with the frequency of 600MHz.

The Verizon customized Droid Turbo model is XT1254. We tested the 64G Rom version, with a usable capacity of 52.3G.

The Droid Turbo supports OpenGL ES3.0 under Android 4.4.4, and the GPU driver version is V84.

An Rabbit's score evaluation... This test doesn't make much sense to people. Let's run it as an example of entertainment. The Droid Turbo has exceeded 50000 points, playing well. It will be difficult for Samsung and LG to use the Snapdragon 805 mobile phone to reach 50000 points, of which the 3D drawing score exceeds 17000 points.

Pi of 10 million bits is mainly aimed at the CPU single core performance. The Droid Turbo achieved 24.8 seconds with an ultra-high main frequency of up to 2649MHz, and performed well.

The above is the comparison between the Droid Turbo and some popular mobile phones in Pi.

In the GFXBench OpenGL test, the performance of the Droid Turbo is also in line with the standard of Snapdragon 805. Of course, there is no big surprise.

Compared with mainstream mobile phones, we can see that the graphics performance of the Droid Turbo is among the best in mobile phones, but there is still a big gap for the monster Tegra K1.

In the A1 SD Bench flash memory performance test, the Droid Turbo used the eMMC 5.0 flash memory, so it also achieved excellent performance in the test.

With a high-frequency quad core processor and terrorist bandwidth support of up to 25.6GB/s, how about the smoothness of the Droid Turbo at 2K resolution? We use the "GPU rendering mode analysis" included in the developer options to test it (the ART mode is enabled during the test). In Sina Weibo, when sliding, you can see that the yellow line and red line are significantly lower than the green baseline (lower than the green line means more than 60 frames).

Baidu Post Bar is not so stable compared with Weibo, but its fluency is still high.

We continue to increase the difficulty, using the famous smooth "cancer test" Taobao client, Droid Turbo continues to use its super strength to hold the treasure list of Taobao, and its performance is amazing, you know, this is 2K high resolution.

In terms of running points, the Droid Turbo performs better than Samsung and LG mobile phones that also use Snapdragon 805. Will it have serious GPU frequency reduction problems in actual games? Let's take a look at the actual measurement:

At the beginning of the game, the CPU is basically stable at the highest frequency of 2.65GHz, and the GPU is also at the highest frequency of 600MHz.

One minute after the game, the CPU began to experience some frequency reduction, while the GPU remained high frequency.

When we played the game for another five minutes, the CPU had already dropped to the level of "cannot bear to look directly", and the GPU had also dropped to the lowest level of 300MHz.

Let's take a look at the GPU frequency change of the Droid Turbo in a few minutes of game testing. It can be seen that at the beginning of the game, the GPU frequency can basically remain at 600MHz, and the middle frequency fluctuates greatly. At the end of the game, it has even dropped to 300MHz for some time.

We also conducted the test of Wild Speed Racing 7. In this game, just entering the game, only 300MHz GPU frequency remains

From the perspective of the game, it is still difficult to "hold" the 2K level screen of the mobile phone using Snapdragon 805. Although the theoretical performance is very strong, the performance in the game is not ideal in the face of a large GPU frequency reduction, and the number of game frames is not high. Therefore, for users who like playing games very much, they may choose the 1080P+Snapdragon 801 mobile phone instead. Snapdragon 805 is strong, but it is not suitable for playing games.

photograph

Droid Turbo uses a 21 megapixel camera with aperture F2.0, and does not add optical anti shake. In view of the poor photo taking effect of Motorola's Android phones in the past, we are still looking forward to the photo taking effect of the Droid Turbo with this hardware specification upgrade.

The Droid Turbo's camera interface does not use the native Android camera, and the arc shaped setting menu on the left side of the screen is added, but the functions are still not much.

The Droid Turbo can focus and take photos with one click. We can also enable the point measurement linkage function, select the focus and metering points by dragging, and then click the screen to take photos.

For comparison of photographic and imaging effects, we used the recognized powerful iPhone 6 Plus as the contrast object.

From the comparison of the first group of samples, the Droid Turbo's analytical power is better than that of the iPhone 6 Plus, and the color is more bright and flattering. In contrast, the iPhone 6 Plus picture has a slight greenish phenomenon, and the color is relatively dim.

In the second group of samples, under the condition of insufficient light, the analytical power of the Droid Turbo can only be said to be average. Compared with the 8 million pixel iPhone 6 Plus, it does not take advantage.

In the third group of samples, the color performance of the Droid Turbo still gives us a good impression, and the illusion effect is better than that of the iPhone 6 Plus. The shortcoming is still the analytical power. The color performance of the iPhone 6 Plus surprised us. Notice that Iron Man's gold armor has a clear tendency to turn green, lacking the luster that gold should have.

Sample of iPhone 6 Plus (click to view a larger picture).

At night, the iPhone 6 Plus finally pulled back and was better than the Droid Turbo in terms of picture details and glare control. With optical anti shake, the ISO of the iPhone 6 Plus is pressed at 80, and the shutter speed is up to 1/4 second. However, the handheld still keeps the picture not "blurred". The Droid Turbo has a higher picture brightness, which is due to its ISO is set to 1000 and the shutter speed is 1/15 second. There is a big difference between the two in the adjustment of night scenes.

Droid Turbo sample (click to view the large picture).

Sample of iPhone 6 Plus (click to view a larger picture).

The other group of night scene samples is similar to the previous group, and the gap is even larger. The iPhone 6 Plus relies on optical anti shake and excellent optimization, and the picture is purer, and the resolution is significantly higher. In this scene, the ISO of the Droid Turbo is unexpectedly raised to 1600, so the image is noisy, while the ISO of the iPhone 6 Plus is only 200. It can be seen that the iPhone 6 Plus will try to lower the ISO in the night scene in order to get a higher picture purity. Even if the exposure time is longer, the use of optical anti shake will not cause "paste".

From the above comparison, the photo performance of the Droid Turbo is basically satisfactory under sufficient light. It has excellent color performance and good analytical power, but the film rate needs to be improved, and the experience of photo application is not very friendly. In terms of night view, the Droid Turbo is still struggling with insufficient light due to the lack of optical anti shake. In general, the Droid Turbo has made great progress in photography compared with Motorola Android phones in the past, and it is enough to deal with daily photography scenes.

Endurance

Motorola has installed a 3900 extra large battery for the Droid Turbo. For phones with 5.2 inch screens, this is definitely a monster level combination. Even compared with many phones with 6 inch screens, this battery capacity does not give way too much. We also used the past methods to test its endurance. The specific test methods are as follows:

Screen brightness: 180cd/㎡

Volume: 75~80dB

Game: NBA2K14 automatically runs for half an hour

WiFi access: microblog Chrome、 Baidu Post Bar Half an hour

Music playing: close the screen to play music in FLAC format, turn on HiFi mode, turn off the sound effect, and play music for one hour

4G Internet access: microblog Chrome、 Baidu Post Bar Half an hour

GSM call: half an hour with the handset off

Hard solution video: built-in video player, playing mp4 video for half an hour

Comparison diagram of endurance test (click to view the large picture).

From our three-and-a-half hour test, we can see that the Droid Turbo's endurance is really strong. Among the high-end mobile phones we have tested, the Ascend Mate 7 is second only to the 4100mAh battery. After all, it also has a 3900mAh battery. The Droid Turbo itself has some automatic wake-up functions of Motorola's lock screen, so many of its sensors are still on when the lock screen is locked. If these functions are manually turned off, I believe the endurance will be better. The Droid Turbo controls the power consumption of music playing, GSM calls and hard video very well. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the Droid Turbo supports Qualcomm's Quick Charge 2.0 technology, supports 9V voltage charging, and only takes 130 minutes to fully charge from 0% with the original charger.

summary

Perhaps due to the customized machine, the Droid Turbo is really low-key compared with other Android phones, but it is also a unique landscape in the powerful high-end mobile phone market with its unique back cover material, high-end hardware configuration and excellent endurance performance. For domestic users, the price of the Droid Turbo bare metal machine is more than 4000 yuan (there are different prices according to different back covers and capacities), which is higher than the price of G3 Cat. 6 and Galaxy S5 Broadband LTE-A with the same level of configuration. The main problems of the Droid Turbo are that the screen color is too bright, the brightness is too low, and the body is too heavy and thick. In addition, because the Bootloader is locked, its playability is relatively low for Android users who like tossing about. The advantages of the Droid Turbo are also obvious, such as super endurance, high smoothness, and special functions such as voice wake-up and automatic screen lock wake-up, which we can't see in other flagship phones. If you have very high requirements for the battery life of your mobile phone, need a mobile phone with large storage capacity, or are a loyal MOTO fan, then I believe that the 64G version of the Droid Turbo will be your best choice.
