Comparison of photos taken by my roommate Vivo X5 Max and Xshot
Comparison of photos taken by my roommate Vivo X5 Max and Xshot

At the end of the year, vivo released the final work of the year, X5 Max. When X5 Max was released, vivo claimed that this new machine, which is only 4.75mm thick, can match the photo taking ability of its own flagship Xshot. Can X5 Max really challenge the photo taking effect of Xshot? Of course, we have to compare before we know.

In terms of camera hardware configuration, The sensor of X5 Max has reached the current mainstream of 13 million pixels. It is equipped with F/2.0 aperture, single LED fill light and auto focus. It doesn't sound like there are many highlights. Although the main shooting Xshot is also equipped with 13 million pixel sensor, vivo has also added a larger aperture like F/1.8 and an optical anti shake lens to the Xshot. As for the fill light, dual color temperature fill light is used.

So after reading the parameters, I think vivo has set a military order for X5 Max that is heavier than a mountain. Can the photo effect of X5 Max really be comparable to that of Xshot with powerful photo hardware?

Vivo X5 Max photo taking interface.

Vivo Xshot photo taking interface.

In terms of the photographing interface, since both are made by vivo, the photographing interface and functions are similar to each other. The biggest difference between the two is that in the manual mode of Xshot, users are allowed to adjust a wider range of parameters. Take ISO as an example, In the manual mode of Xshot, the user can select an ISO value of up to 3200 and an exposure time of up to 32 seconds, while in the manual mode of X5 Max, the maximum ISO value is only 1600 , the maximum shutter time of manual exposure is only 1 second.

First of all, we compare their samples in a stable environment in the studio. When comparing, they both use 13 million pixels to take 4:3 photos. Due to the white background of the studio, EV needs to be adjusted to+1, while the vivo mobile phone needs to switch to "professional mode" if it needs to adjust EV when taking photos, So the samples in the studio are shot in professional mode, focusing, white balance ISO、 The four parameters of shutter speed are all automatic.

In addition, it should be noted that the X5 Max we have received is an engineering machine, which is not perfect in terms of photographing software, mainly because it is easy to lose focus in the night view mode (in fact, focusing is successful), so some of the following night view photos are taken in professional mode.

Unless otherwise specified, X5 Max is on the top of all samples and Xshot is on the bottom.

Studio proof:

In the first group of brightly lit proofs, Both X5 Max and Xshot perform well, but there are obvious differences in hair color trends between the two: the X5 Max sample is light in color, and the overall color restoration is more accurate, while the Xshot hair color is obviously gorgeous, the doll's "face color" is more ruddy than the sample taken by X5 Max, and the overall color saturation is much higher.

Enlarge the center of the sample sheet and compare the picture details of the two. It can be seen that the picture details of X5 Max and Xshot are equal, Xshot is more eye-catching thanks to its more gorgeous colors and higher contrast, and its sense of hierarchy is more abundant, but there are sharpening marks on the edge of the object, leading to a thin bright edge on the edge of the object. Although X5 Max also sharpens the image, the sharpening method is more natural, the overall picture is softer, and the amount of detail is basically the same.

Moving your eyes to the edge of the picture, it is not difficult to find that X5 Max has noise on the black clothes of the doll, while Xshot has better control over noise, but in terms of detail preservation, Due to the high contrast of the image, the detail of the edge of the Xshot is not as good as that of the X5 Max, and because the Xshot uses the super aperture of F/1.8, there is obvious blurring at the edge of the doll. In contrast, the X5 Max does not have this situation, the edge of the doll is still clear, and the small details at the doll collar are also more fully reserved by the X5 Max.

The second group of studio samples was taken after the first group of samples was shot with half of the ambient light turned off. At this time, the performance of the two samples is similar to that of the first group of samples, The overall tone of the X5 Max sample is still relatively light, the brightness is higher than that of the Xshot sample, and the contrast is lower than that of the Xshot sample. The Xshot continues to retain quite beautiful hair color and high contrast. If we say the color accuracy, the X5 Max is actually slightly better.

Enlarge the center of the proof to see that the situation is similar to that of the previous group of well lit proofs. Both of them are very stable, and the details are excellent. The X5 Max is natural as a whole, and the sharpening marks are less than those of the Xshot. Both of them still have a very good retention and restoration of the texture of the doll base. In terms of noise control, the Xshot is better, but the X5 Max is better for preserving the overall details of the picture. The gap between the two is slight.

Move your eyes to the edge of the picture. The performance of the two is similar to that before. The X5 Max still has more details. The Xshot still has bright hair color and high contrast. However, because of the large aperture of the Xshot, the edge of the object is still weak. The X5 Max with a smaller aperture performs well.

Next, turn off all the lights in the studio. At this time, the photographing environment is already quite dark. At this time, the advantages of Xshot's optical anti shake lens and large aperture are fully revealed. Using optical anti shake means that Xshot can appropriately extend the shutter time and reduce ISO, which can reduce noise, The large aperture of F/1.8 means that the Xshot lens has more light input per unit time. These advantages are overwhelming compared with the X5 Max.

Comparing the two samples, it is not difficult to find that the sample of Xshot is more bright, the overall color of the picture is more accurate, and the stereoscopic and hierarchical sense of the picture is far better than X5 Max.

Enlarge the center of the sample, Xshot The samples of the X5 Max show great advantages in color restoration, detail performance, and noise control. The picture is still relatively clean, noise control and detail retention have achieved a very good balance, while the samples of the X5 Max show a lot of noise, and the color restoration is obviously red, the picture brightness is also relatively low, and the overall detail performance is far inferior to that of the Xshot.

At the edge of the picture, the sample of Xshot still has an overwhelming advantage, but the picture quality has dropped significantly compared with the central picture quality. The quality of the edge of the X5 Max picture is better, but even so, I still think the sample shot by Xshot is better.

Summarizing the three groups of samples in the studio, it is not difficult to find that the X5 Max does have a very excellent photo taking effect in an environment with sufficient light, which is really comparable to the samples in the same environment as Xshot, and the edge quality of the X5 Max sample is even higher than that of Xshot. Compared with the colorful hair style of Xshot, the overall performance of the X5 Max sample is more natural, and the sharpening method is more mature, which shows that vivo has really put a lot of effort into taking pictures of X5 Max.

However, in the dark environment, Vivo's efforts on the X5 Max are ultimately no match for the Xshot, which is also his own and has a strong hardware configuration. Large aperture+optical anti shake is like a big killer in the dark environment. The Xshot's excellent noise control, fine node retention and color performance are excellent even in the all Android camp.

Exterior:

Unless otherwise specified, X5 Max is on the top of all samples and Xshot is on the bottom.

These two The weather in Shenzhen is very annoying. It has been raining for several days, and the blue sky is completely invisible. The air permeability is also very poor, which is unfavorable for the two mobile phones to exert their full strength.

When taking photos outdoors, there is a big difference between the two mobile phones in terms of color restoration, X5 Max attaches great importance to the overall green rendering of the picture. The restored green saturation is very high. I can't believe that this is a picture taken in cloudy days. The samples taken in most scenes are very beautiful and pleasant. However, in some scenes, the excessive saturation of green makes the picture less realistic, The sample at this time is not as good as the sample shot by Xshot.

The samples of Xshot are obviously warm. In the macro photos of purple petals, the green restoration of Xshot is much more natural than that of X5 Max, but in the samples of Xshot, the edges of buildings and the gray ground will appear reddening to a certain extent, and X5 Max does better in this area.

In terms of detail retention, both have rich details in the center of the picture, but at the edge of the picture, The detail performance of X5 Max is much better than that of Xshot. For example, in the macro sample of purple flowers, the detail performance of the edge of X5 Max's picture is much better than that of Xshot. In the sample of the lawn, the edge of the sample picture of Xshot has already appeared a clear sense of oil painting, and X5 Max still retains some details.

In terms of exposure and focusing, X5 Max and Xshot are both quite accurate, focusing speed is fast enough, and their exposure is also very accurate.

Night view:

Unless otherwise specified, X5 Max is on the top of all samples and Xshot is on the bottom.

At the beginning of the article, it has been explained that the software of our X5 Max engineering machine is not perfect enough. When taking photos in vivo's default night scene mode, there will be a loss of focus. To ensure the film yield, we use manual mode to shoot in the night scene, and set ISO, shutter speed and white balance to automatic, Manually adjust EV compensation and select focusing light measuring point.

When comparing the two samples, the conclusion in the studio is still valid. On the premise that the overall brightness of the X5 Max picture is equivalent to that of the Xshot, it is not difficult to find that the Xshot does a better job of preserving the overall details of the picture when zooming in on the two samples. Color restoration, noise control and fine pitch retention are better than X5 Max, and it seems that the optical anti shake lens and larger aperture are indeed advantageous.

However, the quality of the X5 Max's samples is also commendable. For a mobile phone that only relies on software algorithms to optimize the image quality, the X5 Max's night photos have a very good color restoration, and the overall picture details are also at an acceptable level. Although the picture has obvious smear marks, it still looks natural on the whole. However, the Xshot is too strong in the night scene, so it is expected that the X5 Max is not as strong as the Xshot.

Summary:

It is hard to believe that the X5 Max is a smart phone that focuses on music. Even in a cloudy day, which is not ideal, the X5 Max can still take pictures with bright colors and rich details. What is more valuable is that the edge of the X5 Max sample is free of obvious picture quality degradation that is common on many other smart phones. The disadvantage of X5 Max is that the restoration of green is too gorgeous in the green dominated scene, which leads to the overall unnatural picture.

Compared with Xshot, the X5 Max does a better job of preserving the overall details of the image when the light is sufficient, especially the details of the image edges. Compared with Xshot, it is a qualitative leap, and color restoration is more accurate in most cases. Xshot is mainly eye-catching at night, and it is far better than X5 Max in terms of noise control and detail retention, The optical anti shake lens allows the Xshot to extend the shutter time appropriately, thus improving the picture brightness. The strength of the hardware makes the Xshot take the lead in night imaging.

So has vivo overstated the photo effect of the X5 Max? This question is a bit difficult to answer, because in the above photo comparison, the X5 Max outperforms the X5 Max in the daytime and the Xshot outperforms the X5 Max at night. If the round system is used for scoring, it is really flat. But for those buyers who value the effect of taking photos at night, the Xshot is still the strongest camera phone under vivo.
