Reject the DVFS Disabler experience of Samsung mobile phones

Samsung Galaxy series mobile phones have a frequency modulation mechanism called "TouchWiz DVFS", which is a step-down and frequency reduction strategy set to control the power consumption and heating of mobile phones. But when we need high performance, it seems to become a burden. We can turn it off through the DVFS Disabler. What's the actual effect?

The full name of DVFS is Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling. Literally, DVFS is a dynamic voltage and frequency regulation. We can turn off DVFS through an Xposed module DVFS Disabler. DVFS Disabler theoretically supports all Samsung Android phones. Of course, because of Xposed, Android 4.4 phones cannot be used if ART and Android 5.0 are enabled. As for the Xposed framework, I believe that Android users who like tossing will be familiar with it, and I will not introduce it here.

We first install the Xposed framework.

Click Install Framework, and it will take effect after restarting.

Install the DVFS Disabler module, select and restart it in Xposed.

Enter the DVFS Disabler module and click Disable TouchWiz DVFS to take effect.

The blacklist can be set in DVFS Disabler, and DVFS will be automatically closed in these applications.

After successfully closing DVFS, we started a large-scale game to test the frequency reduction. We use the Hong Kong Galaxy Note 4 (SM-N910U), which is equipped with the Samsung Exynos 5433 1.9GHz processor. In daily use, this SoC is very prone to frequency reduction. In large games, the high-frequency 1.9GHz state can only last for two or three minutes. What happens after the frequency reduction strategy is turned off?

We played the game for 10 minutes continuously. The frequency of CPU and GPU was constantly changing. The small core Cortex-A53 fluctuated between 900 MHz and 1300 MHz most of the time, and the CPU utilization was relatively average. The large core Cortex-A57 fluctuates between 1400MHz and 1900MHz most of the time, and only one of the cores has a high CPU utilization. And we were surprised to find that after 10 minutes of games, the frequency of Cortex-A57 can still reach the highest frequency of 1900MHz, which proves that DVFS is effective. The GPU is at 350MHz or 420MHz most of the time. Although it is not ideal, it is better than reducing to 266MHz.

From this test, DVFS Disabler can obviously control the frequency reduction of Samsung mobile phones. However, for Exynos 5433, the GPU frequency during the game is still not high enough. To better cope with large games with 2K resolution, we may have to rely on the third-party kernel.
