ASUS PadFone X mini evaluation
RC 2015-11-27 15:57

The PadFone series of ASUS mobile phones has always been a very strange existence. After inserting a "coat", this series of mobile phones will become a tablet. The previous PadFone X, with its high specification and dual mode operation, made everyone look bright. ASUS naturally struck the iron while the iron was hot, and launched the low-end MINI version of X, which can be called the deformation of the mobile phone industry.

Appearance design:

First of all, PadFone X Mini is positioned as a low-end thing, so Asustek has no special design for the appearance of this phone/tablet, and we are not surprised that PadFone X Mini uses a plastic shell design. The low-key design is no different from the mobile phones running on the market.

However, we are very satisfied with the body size of the Mini. After all, a 4-inch mobile phone is quite small today. After it has changed into a tablet mode (in fact, it is just a phone case with a screen and battery and connected to the phone through the MicroUSB interface), The PadFone X Mini has turned into a 7-inch tablet computer. The data processing still relies on the CPU and RAM of the phone, while the battery attached to the jacket is responsible for supplying the power required by the entire system.

After changing to tablet mode, the "jacket" still has independent power button, volume button and USB interface.

We are satisfied with the appearance of the PadFone X Mini. Although it is not a very tall equipment, it is important to match its own positioning, and the overall design is simple and grand.

Screen performance:

PadFone X Mini screen -- I'm talking about the 4-inch screen on the mobile phone and the 7-inch screen on the tablet mode. I can finish my basic tasks fairly well, but if you want to talk about excellent quality, well, there is nothing left.

So let's focus on the following shortcomings: ppi is a hard wound at first, and the brightness of 385 nits is really average, the overall hair color is cold, and the visual angle is also urgent. When we view this screen vertically, its color performance and contrast are OK. However, as we constantly change the viewing angle, this screen presents different changes like a kaleidoscope, and the color and contrast are greatly reduced.

However, for the 7-inch screen in tablet mode, if it is regarded as a low-end 7-inch tablet computer, this resolution is practical.

System and UI:

The system of PadFone X Mini is a ZenUI customized by ASUS based on Android 4.4.2. The design of the entire UI is the same as that of the Big Brother PadFone X. ASUS uses a relatively bright color matching, which makes the entire UI look fresh but not too gaudy.

When the phone is inserted into the "jacket", the built-in dynamic screen display function of Mini will be automatically enabled, and the entire UI will be enlarged to adapt to the operation and resolution of the tablet. In general, this method is very effective in most cases, but for a few incompatible apps, the phone will pop up a prompt.

For users, it is really cool that the mobile phone becomes a tablet in a second, but this can make Google Play difficult, because the Play Store is tangled about whether the Mini belongs to a tablet or a mobile phone, which also makes errors reported when downloading some applications.

From the perspective of the entire UI experience, there is no doubt that PadFone X Mini is very practical, and it is very comfortable to use the tablet mode to access the Internet and read. However, we are most concerned about when ASUS can push the update of 5.0 system to Mini. At present, ASUS has not made any statement, and PadFone X Mini is not a flagship mobile phone, which may make us wait for a long time, Or is it not related to lollipop at all?

Performance:

At present, Intel's processors are far from mainstream, while PadFone X Mini's Intel dual core Z2560 processor has no problems in dealing with daily operations, but sometimes there will be delays and other things. For large games, the performance is also a bit stretched, but after all, it is related to the positioning of the whole machine, For a mobile phone or tablet computer with this location, it is only necessary to smooth daily life, and PadFone X Mini does a good job in this regard.

As for 8GB memory, we also accept its support for SD card expansion and the positioning of the phone itself.

Photo effect:

We are very satisfied that ASUS has not castrated its photographing function because PadFone X Mini is positioned at the low-end. The camera has very rich functions, and it also has the functions of axis shifting photography and depth of field. In general, it has very good playability, which must be praised.

In terms of photographic effect, PadFone X Mini only uses entry-level hardware, so we have low expectations for it. After seeing the actual imaging samples, to be honest, The photo taking effect of PadFone X Mini is really not good, and the biggest problem is the out of focus phenomenon. It is not difficult to find the blurring phenomenon of many samples after magnification, which leads to poor overall detail performance, overexposure, and inaccurate color restoration. In the case of poor light, the samples also have a lot of noise, making the picture ugly.

Charging and endurance:

The battery life of the PadFone X Mini is not good, and it can barely be used for one day. In the battery life test, its performance is only 5 hours, but at least when inserting the tablet case and using the tablet, it can slightly extend the use time.

Summary:

The PadFone X Mini is certainly not a dream model for most people. Its appearance is low-key, its screen is rough, its photo taking effect is poor, and its battery life is also poor. But after taking into account its non contract price of $199, we are relieved that it is only an entry-level mobile phone.

And most importantly, this mobile phone will give users a feeling of "buy one, get one free". Imagine that when you go home from work and insert your mobile phone into your coat, this mobile phone will immediately become a tablet computer. You should know that the price of another 7-inch tablet computer is almost the same, so this point is very attractive to us, but in addition, When the PadFone X Mini is only a mobile phone, there are still too many shortcomings.

advantage:

cheap;

Buying mobile phones and giving away tablets is very interesting and practical;

Compact body size.

Disadvantages:

Poor photo taking effect;

The screen is rough and the viewing angle is not good;

The endurance performance is not ideal.
