Excellent endurance, general appearance, Sony SmartWatch 3 evaluation
Excellent endurance, general appearance, Sony SmartWatch 3 evaluation

Sony was making smart watches long before the launch of Android Wear. At the beginning of the launch of Android Wear, Sony also expressed no interest, but soon Sony's interest came. Now our SmartWatch 3 is the proof that Sony joined the Android Wear battlefield.

Appearance design and hardware:

The appearance of SW3 is very low-key, and to be honest, it is not photogenic at all. However, like many smart watches, the real SW3 is still more beautiful than the photos, and it is not noticeable when worn on the wrist. It is certainly different from the eye-catching gift that MOTO 360 or G Watch R enjoy.

As far as the evaluation machine in my hand is concerned, Sony has matched it with a black silicone watchband, which makes the SW3's low-key appearance more low-key. The appearance is basically similar to most fitness bracelets on the market. So when people see the SW3, they know "Oh, this is a smart watch". As for the watchband, The SW3 does not use a standard watchband. The body of the SW3 can be completely embedded with a silicone watchband. If you want to use other watchbands, you must pay Sony again.

Although such a design seems unreasonable, Sony claims that such a design can make SW3 have a wider range of applications and can be embedded on different devices, rather than just being worn on the wrist. However, Sony has not shown other uses.

In terms of body buttons, There is a small button on the right side of SW3, but this button is hard and has no keyway and no feedback. After pressing it through the silicone strap, I am really hard to determine whether I have pressed it. As for the strap of SW3, most of the time it is very comfortable, so comfortable that I will forget that I still wear SW3. However, the biggest problem of the silicone strap is that it becomes very sticky after sweating, As for the folding watch belt buckle, it is also good to use, but such a buckle can be easily opened after being scratched by something.

SW3 has a higher level of protection than other smart watches on the market. IP68 level of protection means that SW3 can keep water free for 30 minutes under 1.5 meters of water. To put it simply, throw SW3 and Xiao Ming into 1.5 meters of water at the same time, and Xiao Ming drowned 30 minutes later. SW3 is good.

On the back of SW3, there are not many heart rate sensors commonly seen on smart watches. Although the importance of heart rate sensors is not so obvious in actual use, it is still not so pleasant for others to have you. However, SW3 has an additional ambient light sensor than its competitors, which also pulls back the psychological gap.

What is covered by rubber is the MicroUSB interface of SW3, which means that SW3 is the first smart watch device with a charging interface. Yes, 360 has wireless charging, but 360 is very picky about the charging base, and the charging of SW3 is very simple. Even when you go out, you don't need to bring a special charger. Yes, This charging method of pulling the cover and inserting the root cable is not as elegant as wireless charging, but its adaptability makes me willing to give SW3 a big praise.

In terms of other hardware, Sony has added GPS, NFC and even Wi Fi to SW3. Although GPS does not support APP very well at present, NFC can only be used to start Android Wear APP on mobile phones at present. Wi Fi module is a device at present, but it may be useful in the future.

Screen performance:

Unlike today's popular OLED screens, SW3 uses a semi transparent LCD screen. When touching, this screen is the same as an ordinary LCD screen. When the watch sleeps, this screen turns off the backlight, and only displays the current time with a monochrome tone. This means that when users use SW3 outdoors to see the time, this screen will be clearer and more power saving, But if you want to see the time in a dark place, you still have to wake up your watch.

When the backlight is turned on, the LCD screen of SW3 is slightly warm, or even slightly yellow. This problem is easy to find under the white background. Maybe this is the characteristic of this screen. After all, it is worth the loss to gain excellent outdoor visibility.

Personally, I prefer the round dial for nothing else. I just think it is more beautiful and cool, but the square dial can display more information. So the screen or dial of SW3 may not be the best looking, but its practicability is absolutely high. The semi transparent screen is a big highlight.

Battery life:

Before talking about this topic, please allow me to make a remark: today's smart phones almost have to be charged every day, and will our watches have to be charged every day in the future? The motorcycle 360 is really beautiful, but its endurance is only ha ha, so what's the use of being beautiful?

Fortunately, SW3 has killed 360 and most other smart watches in terms of endurance.

However, the battery life is closely related to everyone's use habits. My personal use intensity of these digital products is higher than that of many people. Every day, there is a steady stream of emails, chat messages, weather updates, and frequent installation of applications, It is impossible for SW3 to rest on my wrist safely, but even with such workload, the endurance of SW3 on my hand has reached two days. If it is used lightly, doubling the endurance is not a problem.

The 420 mAh battery built into SW3 certainly contributes a lot. This capacity is one of the largest among Android Wear devices at present. The G Watch R with the same large battery capacity cannot beat SW3 in terms of endurance even with its smaller OLED screen.

Software and performance:

Since Google does not allow manufacturers to customize Android Wear, the dial has become the only place where manufacturers can exert their creativity. Obviously, Sony has not been able to seize this opportunity. With the default dial of the Wear platform, there are only three SW3 dials. The first two are OK, but the third one... Are you kidding me?

Well, this is the virtue of the original dial. Fortunately, the SW3 dial animation effect is good, and the animation is smooth and natural. The Snapdragon 400 is more than enough on this low resolution screen, and the processor also balances the performance and power consumption well. There is no delay when sliding left and right on the interface or twisting the wrist to wake up.

As for the Android Wear platform, it has basically been said that it is bad in the evaluation of other smart watches, and SW3 does not have any other exciting new functions. As for downloading various apps, it is of course no difference. However, thanks to the square screen, SW3 is more convenient than the round screen in actual APP operation.

Buy or not?

The devices on the Android Wear platform have basically been updated for a generation. As far as SW3 is concerned, the most important thing is that there is no heart rate sensor. After all, the target buyers of this kind of smart watch are mostly fake fitness controllers. Without heart rate sensors in SW3, the buyers have a less forced way. In terms of appearance, SW3 is naturally not ugly, but it is also not beautiful. For a tool, it is just right, and the comfortable silicone strap is also a plus.

The advantages and disadvantages of the SW3 screen are very obvious. The super good outdoor visibility of the semi transparent screen and lower power consumption than OLED are too practical for a smart watch. However, this screen is just like an ordinary LCD screen at night. Even if you want to see it for a while, you have to light it up.

SW3 is also the first Android Wear device with a built-in GPS module. However, there are few APP adaptations at present, and the same is true for Wi Fi and NFC. At present, they are both furnishings. However, the built-in modules also mean that SW3 can have a longer life cycle and can stand longer with its internal functions in future generations.

In terms of price, Sony has attached the same price tag of $250 to SW3 as MOTO 360, which is much cheaper than the more high-end G Watch R ($300). Considering the higher level of protection, better endurance and longer life cycle in the future, this price is reasonable.

In my opinion, SW3 is a very good smart watch with enough functionality. If you want to buy a smart watch, SW3 is worth seeing.

advantage:

  • Very good endurance;

  • It's very comfortable to wear;

  • The operation is smooth;

  • Semi reflective screen is very clear and readable in the sun;

  • With light sensor;

  • GPS、NFC、Wi-Fi。

Insufficient:

  • Semi reflective screen has no advantage at night, and the screen is still yellow;

  • The power button feels bad;

  • The silicone strap is simply a vacuum cleaner, and it is not a standard strap;

  • There is no heart rate sensor.
