Not so simple HTC D820u evaluation
Not so simple HTC D820u evaluation

overview:

At this year's IFA conference, HTC did not offer its latest flagship like Samsung and Sony - after all, HTC's flagship is updated every year after taking the boutique strategy. Although it is not as crazy as some airframe maniac, HTC is still very diligent in updating its Desire series. This time, we got the D820 which is still hot.

The D820 is HTC's first 64 bit Android phone, or the first Android phone released in the industry. This seemingly simple title is far from enough for a phone. If you want to succeed in the current market, 820 needs to do more.

Specifications:

From the perspective of specifications, the D820 is a mid - and low-end mobile phone, but HTC has added an 8 megapixel front camera to it, and it uses the self portrait beauty function as the selling point, and hopes that this self portrait function can be combined with beautiful body colors to attract female consumers.

It should be noted that our D820 is one Engineering test prototype The machines that real consumers have bought may be different in some aspects. At the deadline, the Android version of this engineering machine was 4.4.4, and the software version was 1.0.0.D820u. In the near future, HTC will push Android L systems from its phones, including Desire series, and D820 will get 64 bit computing support.

appearance:

The housing material of the D820 is the same as that of the ONE M8S we evaluated before. There are colored plastic packages around the camera, the frame of the body and the buttons. HTC calls this the Double Shot design, which looks very special.

Although the D820 uses a plastic body, the overall workmanship is very solid and reliable. There is no obvious gap in the body except for the card slot cover plate. Considering the official price of 1999 (the official will also give DOT VIEW protective sleeve during the pre-sale period, but now if you want to buy this protective sleeve, you have to buy the official 2148 yuan package), there is nothing to complain about at this level of workmanship.

This time we got the D820u in blue and white. It uses the nanoSIM card and supports dual cards and dual standby. The card slot 1 supports GSM WCDMA、HSDPA、TD-SCDMA、FDD-LTE、TDD-LTE, In short, it supports all networks on the market except for 2G and 3G of telecommunications; When slot 1 is enabled for 3G/4G, slot 2 only supports GSM. Of course, the user can set slot 2 to support 3G/4G networks, but the 3G/4G network of slot 1 will be disabled.

In addition, it should be noted that although the D820 officially claims to have 16GB of memory, only 9GB of memory can be accessed by users through USB. It is necessary to purchase an SD card to expand storage.

In addition, in addition to the Unicom version of D820u, the D820t mobile version is also available in China. The difference between the two versions is that the mobile version shields WCDMA and FDD-LTE in China and will be automatically enabled during international roaming. Please pay attention when purchasing.

The user available memory of the fashionable version of ONE, which also has 16GB of memory, has reached 10.3GB, but it is much larger than the D820.

The D820 body is 7.74mm thick, very thin.

The most complained about design of the D820 is the design of the camera with a huge back and a little bit of prominence (in fact, very little prominence, as shown in the above figure). Different people have different opinions on whether it looks good or not. However, the prominent camera may cause wear when it is placed on the desktop everyday, and the lens protection glass is not well protected.

The front is still HTC's signature BoomSound dual speakers and three-stage design.

The front camera has reached 8 million pixels and is located above the screen. It supports 1080p video recording. HTC has also developed a series of self timer functions for the D820, such as real-time beauty and face changing. LED notification light and distance sensor have been moved to the front black panel, which is well hidden.

The front left and right frames can take off and land Boeing 747 aircraft.

On the right side of the fuselage are the power button and volume button, both of which are on the upper side. One handed operation is not as easy as expected. Fortunately, the touch of the button is good and the feedback is obvious.

The 5.5 inch D820 is as wide as the 5.7 inch Note 3, but even longer. Of course, the 820 is still thinner.

With regard to the color of the fuselage, all D820s sold on HTC's official website at present only have blue and white color matching (the far right of the above figure) and blue and gray color matching (the far left of the above figure). Other various color styles have not yet been released to the public. I personally think the red and white color matching (the second from the right) is the most beautiful, and I will definitely choose it if I pay for it.

Screen:

The D820 screen is a 5.5 inch 720p IPS screen. The screen is full and transparent, and its brightness and visual angle are also excellent, maintaining the excellent level of HTC. Although the PPI is slightly lower, the D820 is positioned as an entry-level smartphone, and cannot be too demanding.

The screen of D820 is full of color and natural in transition. The restoration of color is slightly cold, but it is also relatively accurate. The appearance is very comfortable and well received.

The D820 screen is very bright green, slightly different from the actual picture.

When displaying a pure black picture, the D820 screen shows excellent quality. The backlight is even, and there is no light leakage around. The screen brightness in the above figure has been adjusted to 100%, which is not easy.

in general The screen of the D820 is full of colors, featuring high brightness and high contrast, and the actual appearance is very excellent. Although it is slightly cold for the actual picture, the display effect is a flattering type, which is better than the screen of other large brands of low-end models.

photograph:

The D820 removes ZOE support, and the rear camera has a relatively general function.

The camera's viewfinder interface is still in the style of HTC, which is very simple. Of course, there will be many special effects with very detailed settings. This is the same as the previous HTC models, so there is no need to repeat it here.

D820 also provides the M file, in which the user can use a very intuitive interface to adjust the photographing parameters.

Night view sample:

The night shot image of the D820 is fairly good. At least, it can afford its price in 1999. After the D820 opens the night scene mode, it will use the multi frame synthesis method to process the photos. The details are not bad, but when facing the light source, there will be very obvious glare, such as the light spots around the road lights in the sample, which will have a significant impact on the picture.

HDR proof sheet:

If the HDR function (as shown in the second picture) is turned on when the D820 engineering machine in hand takes a big contrast picture, the picture will be seriously overexposed. This is not an accident. I hope HTC can solve this problem on the retail version of the machine, otherwise this function will be basically useless.

Daytime sample:

The white balance of the HTC D820 often deviates when taking photos in the daytime. After the white balance deviates, the overall picture becomes warmer and redder, and the color restoration ability is also average. Only in macro, the D820 performs better, the picture is sharp, and the color is more accurate.

After the D820 turns on the camera to start shooting, the four low frequency cores will be closed, and the four high frequency cores will maintain a relatively high frequency for processing, which also causes the D820 to have obvious heat when taking photos. However, due to this software setting, the D820's imaging speed is very fast, and the photos can be saved soon after pressing the shutter.

Sample of front lens:

The front lens of the D820 supports HDR and real-time beauty functions when taking photos. The latter allows users to adjust the degree of skin abrasion through the slider on the top of the screen before taking photos.

The effect of the front lens of the D820 is really cool. At least the white balance is more accurate than the rear lens. But the sharpness and detail retention of the picture are not as good as 8 million pixels. But maybe it is better to take a self portrait less clearly?

The front camera has 1080p video recording function, and you can choose whether to turn on skin beautification before taking photos. However, in HDR mode and self portrait mode, it is not possible to turn on skin beautification before taking photos.

After taking a picture, D820 will automatically recognize the face in the picture, and can carry out a series of processing for the face, including skin polishing, brightening, eye enlargement, etc. However, the most incomprehensible thing about D820 is that after editing the picture, I can't undo the action I performed in the previous step, so I want to shrink the eyes again after accidentally making myself into a bull's eye, Sorry, the previous processing was in vain. Could HTC please add the cancellation function?

HTC is really working hard on the front lens. As a result, the front 8 megapixel lens is basically superior to the rear 13 megapixel lens in terms of image details and auto focus, especially the white balance performance. Maybe it will be more reliable to take photos directly with the front lens when the ambient light is bright? (laughing)

System:

The D820 runs Sense 6.0 user interface based on Android 4.4.4 system, and has no obvious difference from many other HTC phones in terms of system. However, the D820 removes the rest screen gesture function on the M8 and M8S, and can only wake up the handset with the power button after the handset enters the sleep state. In addition, the D820's power button position design is relatively high, Therefore, it is unrealistic to want to perform fast operations after daily one handed unlocking. I wanted to complain about this, but this has something to do with the 820's positioning.

It continues to be Sense 6's signature Blinkfeed interface. The D820u of the Bank of China version can log in to Sina Weibo account, and then use this to view Weibo. When you click to open Weibo, you will automatically jump to the official client to open it, and then you can see the classic 4-tier chin again.

Android 4.4.4 of the D820 retains the support of the ART mode, which can be enabled in exchange for better intra application fluency. However, for some industry cancer level applications, the compatibility of the ART mode is not 100% perfect at present. If the requirements are not particularly high, it will be good to use Dalvik. After all, the daily fluency of the D820 is not critical.

HTC's own software store does not shy away from this four jaw problem, and is also drunk.

The multi task interface of Sense 6 still can only display 9, and is still closed by upscaling. After closing, users are allowed to upscaling and close the next one only after the animation effect has gone through. Fortunately, there is a one click clear button.

The D820 has removed the NFC function, which I am personally dissatisfied with. After all, NFC is still a very useful function. After taking a selfie with a friend, you can easily and quickly share photos, check your bus card balance at any time and anywhere, and many Bluetooth devices now also have NFC function, which can be connected with a touch, You can also use the NFC tag to easily and quickly change the ringing tone settings of your phone.

The D820 on hand is an engineering machine, and the power-saving mode cannot be enabled.

Performance:

Of course, the biggest stunt of the D820 is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 64 bit processor, which has eight Cortex-A53 cores. Four of the eight cores have the highest frequency of 1.5GHz, and the other four have the highest frequency of 1.0GHz. The Adreno 405 GPU, Barabara's, is matched with it.

An Rabbit Run has a score of 29388 points. Its performance is relatively ordinary, but it is stronger than Samsung, Sony, LG mobile phones at the same price or even some higher prices (provided, of course, that the price of the D820 is maintained on the basis of 1999 yuan).

Unfortunately, the D820 is currently only equipped with the Android 4.4.4 system, and does not support 64 bit computing for the time being. We need to wait for HTC to update Android L for it to be able to play the full performance of this processor. But to be honest, we don't need to have too much expectation on the performance of this processor. After all, the use of the Cortex-A53 architecture shows that this CPU is mainly economical.

CHROME Daily spider score is 1008 milliseconds, average level.

All eight cores of the Snapdragon 615 can be turned on at the same time. HTC has also built a "high-performance mode" into the D820. Although this feels like adding a sports mode button to the Toyota Corolla, after turning on the D820 CPU, it will immediately raise the frequency to the upper limit of 1.5GHz+1.0GHz when necessary. However, after running a large game for a period of time, The frequency will become a combination of 1.5GHz+800MHz and can be basically stabilized at this frequency. In addition to certain performance improvement, of course, there will be huge heat output and power consumption. No wonder HTC will hide this setting in the developer menu.

In fact, the fever of Snapdragon 615 has something to do with the adoption of Cortex-A53 architecture, A53 is a castrated version of the high-level architecture A57, which is based on the A15 architecture. In this way, the hot and moving A53 can be explained.

The performance of the D820 is definitely not born for fever, nor does it have the capital to tell others that "not satisfied with running a minute". The 64 bit CPU brings more gimmicks, but fortunately, HTC's optimization of the entire UI makes the system UI of the D820 as smooth as the flagship model in the market, which is very comfortable for daily use.

Games and AV:

The heat of the D820 is mainly concentrated on the upper part of the fuselage. When holding the horizontal screen to play the game, it has a great impact on the feeling of holding the left hand. People who are more sensitive to temperature may even feel uncomfortable.

The D820 can run the real racing car 3, but Adreno 405 is obviously very hard for such a large game. Under the default special effect level, the average frame number is obviously insufficient, and there is a obvious "stuck" phenomenon. The average frame number is 23FPS after two minutes of testing, However, it should be noted that the default image quality of the game is high (the rear-view mirror of the interior view will be updated with the image, and the lighting effect will be more abundant). You can download external software to adjust the image to low image quality mode in exchange for fluency.

The D820 performs well when running the Ninja Turtle: Running on the Roof with much lower performance requirements. The average score is 45FPS. There is no stuck phenomenon during the game operation. The only problem is that the game does not support the Android 4.4 immersion mode, and it often encounters the virtual key bar by mistake when operating.

The BoomSound dual speakers on the front of the D820 have a loud voice and excellent sound quality. The HTC BoomSound is also famous in the industry. You don't need to worry about the external amplification effect. Even when the volume is turned to the maximum, the sound quality is still very good, and there is no broken sound.

The D820 screen is very good for watching videos. Combined with the stereo effect of the BoomSound dual speakers, it is the best among Android phones at the same price.

D820 can also install an online video client such as bilibili to watch online video. Of course, the effect and clarity can only depend on the quality of the film source.

The D820 has good video playing ability and can play common video formats. The Android system can also install third-party players, so you can rest assured. See the table below for detailed video playing tests.

Hard solution to play 1080p video:

Full frame, nothing to say.

Video soft solution playback capability (advanced):

The video is 1440p 30FPS ref=3, and the FPS is only about 15, so it can not be full frame, and can be seen basically.

2160p 24fps ref=3, this is basically kneeling, and can't be seen.

2304p 24fps ref=1, kneeling, nothing to say.

In a word, due to the limitation of the performance of the Snapdragon 615 SoC, not all videos can be played smoothly. In general, the maximum 720p video is enough. After all, the screen resolution of the D820 is 720p, and the higher definition video cannot bring about the improvement of the definition in essence.

In addition, although software such as MX PLAYER and BS PLAYER can be used to force soft solutions to enable the D820 to play some videos with relatively high bit rates, the result is severe heating and rapid power consumption. A few minutes of video playback will consume about 5% of the battery power, which is really not worth the loss.

Endurance and charging:

The D820 has a good endurance performance. Every day, it spends half an hour on 3G Internet, half an hour on WI-FI Internet, half an hour on playing music and half an hour on watching video. The screen brightness is automatically adjusted. The use intensity of about 5 calls a day is commendable.

However, the charging speed of the D820 is not so ideal. After charging for one and a half hours from 9% of the alarm power, the power only reaches 77%, while the ONE fashion version can be fully charged from 20% under the same charging conditions. The reason is unknown.

Summary:

HTC is a company that makes great efforts to produce products, and will dare to try in various directions. Its mobile phones have always had very special designs, but whether the appearance design can be accepted by consumers is another matter. At least from the D820 and the M8S I evaluated earlier, HTC must have something unspeakable but really worthy of my respect.

Back to the D820 itself, in recent years, middle - and low-end mobile phones like to plug themselves with a camera with a high pixel, and then do a lot of beauty and other functions to focus on the selfie function. Sony's C3 even has a front fill light. Samsung will also try to build a series A, although the series A has not yet been officially released, but combined with so many rumors, The new Galaxy A series will focus on the self timer function (if not face slapping), and Lenovo VIBE Z2, which I evaluated earlier, also has a good self timer function (even can recognize the age). Compared with them, the biggest advantage of the D820 is to take the first bus of 64 bit Android. But to be honest, I think the biggest advantage of the D820 is its UI. The overall smoothness of Sense is above TouchWiz, UXP, VIBE UI, Emotion UI, etc., and the touch screen response of the D820 is very good. The quick response can first leave a good impression on users. In addition, Sense 6 is simpler and more beautiful than the domestic UI, and has better fluency and functionality than TouchWiz and UXP. The localization of domestic goods is also better. Combining all these together is the real advantage of the D820. Unfortunately, these advantages can only be realized after personal contact.

  Let's be objective.

fabulous:

  • The machine body is well made, with bold appearance design and beautiful color matching;

  • The sound effect of dual speakers is excellent;

  • The screen display effect is very good;

  • Simple and generous UI, smooth operation;

  • Good call quality;

  • Dual card dual standby and support dual 4G network;

  • Photographing and imaging speed is fast;

  • The price is very generous.

Bounce:

  • High heat when taking photos and playing games;

  • No double click screen wake-up function;

  • The fuselage frame is too wide, and the pressure of single hand operation is high;

  • No NFC function;

  • The rear lens has an average photographic effect.

Yes, the D820 is indeed inferior to the 1999 and 1799 in performance, and the overall photographic effect is relatively ordinary, and there is no elaborate metal frame. However, after all, the HTC brand is not on the same level as the 1999 brand, D820 is suitable for those who want a large screen selfie phone, pursue good speaker effect, and have certain requirements for screen quality, workmanship and brand.

I hope HTC can continue to go forward with full personality.
