Evaluation of Nokia Lumia 930
Evaluation of Nokia Lumia 930

Nokia, which was acquired by Microsoft, redefined the flagship of Windows Phone with Lumia 930 equipped with WP 8.1. With a newly designed border, 930 was as dazzling as its original name icon at the beginning of its debut. After the introduction of the powerful Snapdragon 800, 930 finally has the qualification to compete with other system flagship. Maybe Lumia 930 is an opportunity for Windows Phone to transform, It is also a starting point for new life.

Specifications:

In terms of other hardware configurations, 930 is equipped with 32G non expandable memory, 20 megapixel ZEISS certified camera, Qi wireless charging NFC、 Wireless AC, Bluetooth 4.0 LE and currently Lumia's exclusive HAAC microphone (High range audio recording microphone, with greater dynamic range and anti-interference capability) , showing the flagship style. The addition of HAAC microphone also improved the 930's audio recording ability from stereo to Dolby 5.1 channels.

appearance:

The appearance of the Lumia 930 is still the classic Lumia style: the polycarbonate integrated body and the curved glass screen, while the 930 borrows from others in appearance, combining the design of 925 and 928, giving consideration to lightweight (only 139g) and durability, and the metal frame can also be used as the antenna of the mobile phone.

Like the 925, the 930 uses a metal frame, but the shape of the frame is obviously more similar to the 928. The straight lines shape a strong body. The curved polycarbonate back echoes with the curved gorilla glass screen on the front of the body, making the 930 look very beautiful and exquisite. Nokia also provides four body colors for the 930: black, white Green, orange. The evaluation machine we got is orange, which looks very bright and moving.

Other exterior designs include the 3.5mm headphone jack at the top and the USB 2.0 interface at the bottom, surrounded by insulating strips in different colors from the frame, the nanoSIM card slot that can be opened with a fingernail, the volume button, the power button, and the two-part camera button on the right side, the 20 megapixel ZEISS certified lens, dual LED fill lights, and speakers on the back. In addition, 930 also supports double click wake-up.

Unlike HTC 8X and MOTO X phones with curved back design, the 930 is not as comfortable to hold as the above two phones. The main reason is that the larger screen size and the strong lines of the frame, and the anti slip performance of the metal frame is relatively ordinary. Although it is not a fatal defect, it is also not negligible.

The biggest regret of the 930 is that Nokia Glance screen support is removed. This function can display time, notifications and device information on the screen when the device is in standby. According to the evaluation of wpcentral.com, since 930 removes the screen cache used to minimize the power consumption of screen self refresh, this function may not be added in subsequent software upgrades. This approach would not be a problem if it was put on the low-end 630, but it seems unforgivable for the flagship 930.

In general, the 930 is made of superior materials and workmanship. Compared with the general sense of grip, the lack of Nokia Glance function is the most disappointing thing. After all, it is one of the best features on the Nokia WP model.

Performance:

The 930 is Nokia's second device equipped with Snapdragon 800 chipset (the first is 1520). The maximum main frequency of the Krait 400 architecture CPU has reached 2.2GHz. In addition, there are Adreno 330 GPU and 2G LPDDR3 RAM. This performance combination can be regarded as a call for the WP camp to counter attack the hardware performance, and the strong hardware performance has also brought significant improvements to daily operation - 930 is a clear slap for those who argue that the WP system does not need strong hardware configuration. The speed of APP loading and APP background re wake-up has been significantly improved, especially the latter. You should know that the slow re wake-up speed of applications like Skype in the WP system has been complained about numerous times before, but Snapdragon 800 finally makes WP no longer disabled in this respect.

We ran several times and the results are as follows:

In the Japanese Spider War, 930 integrated the tradition of Internet Explorer, which is crazy and cool, and only lost to the iPhone 5S. In terms of more complex JavaScript, The difference between IE11 and other browsers is remarkable: 930 lost to the Nexus 5 with the same processor, which is a bit behind the mobile phone with Snapdragon 801. However, compared with the predecessor 1020930, the performance of IE11 has nearly doubled, which means that the waves of the Yangtze River have pushed the waves of the past.

The same situation happened again in the Google Octane test. Although 930 lost to Nexus 5, it lost last year's Lumia device without pressure. The WebXPRT test did not happen unexpectedly.

As an independent application, BaseMark gets rid of the limitations of the browser's JavaScript engine at runtime, so the 930 performs very well. It has achieved similar results to the iPhone 5S and nearly doubled its performance compared with the 1020. From these scores, it can be seen clearly how much the 930 has improved compared with the WP device equipped with the MSM8960.

Because our commonly used BaseMark X 1.1 has bugs on 1520 and 930, the test cannot be completed, so we used GFXBench for performance test to see how effective the 930 is.

The graphics performance of the 930 is a leap compared with the previous generation of products. Although there is still a gap between the scores of Android and iOS devices, at least the 930 has entered the first echelon today.

Performance summary:

Compared with the Android devices of the same generation, the SoC of WP devices often lags behind, and there is an important gap in performance. With the debut of 930, Nokia finally caught up in the SoC, which is gratifying for the WP camp. Recently, HTC also released the Windows version of ONE (M8), marking that WP phones and Android flagship have finally used the same SoC.

Although the WP system has a good performance in low-end hardware configuration (at least the system itself and excessive animation are very smooth), the experience gap is very obvious when running the APP. The release of 930 is like a spring rain of hardware watering the dry land of WP. Perhaps the performance of 930 is a new starting point for WP.

Screen:

The 930 is equipped with a 5-inch 1080p AMOLED screen, and the sub-pixel arrangement is RGBG. In the past, there were many problems in the color restoration of AMOLED screens. The recently released Samsung S5 and S5 LTE-A show that the color restoration of AMOLED can also be very accurate. However, we have doubts whether the 930 screen can achieve the same level. After all, the screen is most commonly used on a smart phone Component.

The latest Lumia device provides more screen setting options after updating the Cyan firmware, including fully adjustable brightness, color temperature, hue and saturation adjustment functions. This is a great progress. I hope the 930 screen can perform well.

The following figure shows the effect of the rear screen when the sun is turned on.

Like the 630 we have evaluated before, the 930 has joined the support of Nokia Joy Screen Technology, which enables the screen to have better visibility and deeper black outdoors by reducing the reflection effect inside the display screen. The 930 also has an outdoor mode. Nokia's approach is to adjust on adjacent pixels, Thus, the screen can be clearer and easier to read under strong light without increasing the power consumption of the screen.

The maximum brightness of the 930 screen is close to 400 nit, which is very good for AMOLED. The maximum brightness of other 1080p AMOLED screens, including the Galaxy S5, is only 350 nit, which also makes the 930 screen more readable in the sun.

Having said the advantages, now we can talk about the disadvantages. The white color temperature is 6347K, and the result is good. However, due to the saturation of green, compared with The white level is low 5%~10%, and then the subsequent decline is more severe, which also leads to the average dE2000 of the gray scale reaching 9.4777, and the trend of dE2000 of this gray scale is almost completely opposite to that of the green dE2000.

The accuracy of saturation is not particularly good. The average value of dE2000 reaches 6.6579. Regardless of the grayscale, the saturation scanning results also show that all color restores are biased.

Same as saturation scanning results, In Gretag Macbeth's color detection results, the dE2000 also exceeded 6, which was really a bad result. As for the color calibration of the screen, the 930 has nothing to commend. It is obvious that Nokia did not calibrate the color of the screen before the 930 left the factory. Its competitors worked hard in this regard (@ Lao Luo).

Screen adjustment function:

After the 930 screen was manually adjusted to increase the green saturation, the performance of data detection has been significantly improved. The white balance has reached 7006K. Although the 4.03 gray scale is still not perfect, it has been significantly improved compared with the previous 9.477 performance. The accuracy of saturation has been greatly improved to 3.6781, Gretag Macbeth's result also reached 3.075, which can be called a good screen.

In general, this screen has a mixed reputation. The 441ppi erases the jagged feeling brought by the sub pixel arrangement of RGBG, and the image display is clear and sharp. The larger screen allows more content to be displayed on the same screen. The UI of AMOLED and Windows Phone is a perfect match. The advantages of the former in contrast and black purity can be fully used under the UI of Windows Phone. Unfortunately, the color accuracy of this screen is very poor when it leaves the factory. Although it can be manually adjusted inside the system, it does not match the flagship status of 930 to go out without color adjustment.

Starting from 808 Pureview, Nokia has produced a series of cameras with mobile phone functions. This year's 930 is equipped with a 1/2.5 inch 20 million pixel back lit sensor and a six lens ZEISS certified lens, with a maximum aperture of F/2.4 and optical anti shake function.

First, we use ISO12233 to test the analytical power of 930 lens.

The resolution of the 930 lens began to decline at around 15, while the 1020 with higher pixels persisted to over 19, the iPhone 5S was around 13, and the G3 reached 16.

In terms of vertical resolution, 930 scores between 15 and 16, 1020 and 20 are very strong, iPhone 5S scores around 13, and G3 scores 14.

In the room, there is not much difference between the samples. The 9301020 and Canon T4i both use full automatic mode. The 930 sample is good. Although there are noise points on the picture, the overall image quality is good, and the white balance is slightly off center. In the 930 night photos, the light of the whole environment looks like white, but it is not. The ISO of 930 has reached 3200, and the shutter speed is 1/3 second. However, in general, 1020 has defeated digital cameras in terms of sharper imaging, less noise, more accurate white balance, and even in terms of the accuracy of white balance.

Outdoor night view 2:

Canon EOS T4i

In this group of samples, Canon T4i has the best imaging quality. 1020 ranks second. The overall white balance is green, but the noise control is excellent. 930 has a good effect in this group of samples, and the white balance is more accurate than 1020.

Daytime sample:

nine hundred and thirty

one thousand and twenty

Canon EOS T4i

In the daytime proof, 930's color balance is slightly red, but it is harmless as a whole.

In this comparison, the most powerful camera smart phone is still the 1020. However, considering the size of the sensor, the 1020 wins. The 930 has more noise than the 1020 when the light is poor. But in general, the 930's camera ability is very sufficient in most occasions.

Shutter delay:

The focus delay of the 930 is similar to that of the 630, so it seems that the system may be the reason that limits the 930's performance, and the focus speed of the 930 is much faster than that of some Android models.

The shutter delay of 930 is very obvious when using Nokia professional photography, almost reaching 2 seconds, which is much slower than the original camera software. It is likely that when using Nokia professional photography, the mobile phone will take two photos, while using the original camera, only one photo will be saved, It seems that the imaging speed is not improved after only one photo is saved in Nokia professional shooting settings. Maybe this function cannot be turned off.

So it seems that 930's photography speed really has no advantage. But in IFA 2014, Microsoft announced that it will launch a new Lumia camera software to improve the photography speed. Microsoft officially announced that the new camera app can complete the imaging in milliseconds. Combined with the above tests, this update is a lifesaving straw.

The 930 can record 1080p and 720p video, and the corresponding frame rates can be 30FPS, 25FPS and 24FPS. The lack of 60 and 120FPS recording is disappointing, but at least the 930 can achieve 5.1 channel recording through the built-in four HAAC microphones. Nokia claims that the HAAC microphone can record up to 140 decibels of sound, and the 930 has a built-in low-frequency filter that allows users to choose to filter out some environmental noise similar to the sound of car engines.

The format of the video file is mp4. For compatibility, the video channel recorded by the 930 after the Dolby mode is turned on is still stereo. The addition of the optical anti shake lens also makes the video captured by the 930 more stable when moving. However, if it can support high-speed video recording or 4K video recording, it will be perfect. With the SoC performance of the 930, it can be done completely.

Wi Fi web browsing, power saving mode on:

It is obvious that after the power-saving mode is turned on, the 930's endurance has improved significantly, but that is, from very poor to poor. The 630's low resolution LCD screen makes its endurance much better than that of the 930.

930 decisively counterattacked in the endurance test of BaseMark OS II without JavaScript.

In the overall battery score, 930 again lags behind other devices, but this time, the gap is much smaller than that in the web browsing test.

charge:

The 930 supports Qualcomm's fast charging 2.0 technology and Qi wireless charging technology. The standard charging pool output is 1.5A, and the charging time is nearly 3 hours. It is believed that the charging time can be reduced to about 2.5 hours after using the fast charger.

Battery Summary:

Although the 930 has a battery of similar capacity to other devices of similar size, it is expected that the 930 will not keep up with its competitors in terms of endurance. However, we were a little surprised by the surprisingly poor endurance of the 930 in the web browsing test, and the 930 will also have an obvious heating phenomenon during web browsing.

Although AMOLED displays a lot of white when browsing the network, which will lead to high power consumption, AMOLED also saves considerable power when watching videos, which is particularly obvious on the 930. However, the Galaxy S5, which uses a newer generation of AMOLED, has a 10 hour battery life of 10.78Wh.

The size of the 930 is really not small. It is reasonable that Nokia can actually put a larger battery into the 930, but Nokia did not do so, which is a bit difficult to understand.

System:

The 930 has been equipped with Lumia Cyan firmware when it was delivered to users. Compared with the customization of Android phones, the customization of Cyan is limited to adding a few exclusive Nokia software, so in terms of system, we will focus on the trial of exclusive built-in applications of Nokia.

Cyan finally added the screen free adjustment function, and the screen sleep time can also be "never", which was unimaginable on the previous WP mobile phones.

Similarly, Nokia's HERE navigation software is also built into the 930. HERE Drive+is used for car navigation, HERE Maps is used for comprehensive navigation, and HERE Transit provides public transport information. For Google Maps, HERE is a good alternative, not to mention that the WP system basically does not have Google Maps built into it.

The SensorCore in the 930 is a low-power component built into the Snapdragon 800 to ensure that the mobile phone can still collect sensor information during deep sleep. On the WP 8.1 system, this component is also used for corresponding voice to call Microsoft's voice assistant Cortana.

Microsoft is trying to transform Nokia APP into Lumia APP. Considering the acquisition of Nokia, this move seems to be taken for granted. For example, Nokia Storyteller, which collected user photos and classified them by date and location, has changed its name to Lumia Storyteller. It has similar functions to HTC. If you like this kind of application, This product is worth playing with.

The new version of the WP system has also been improved on the browser, and the overall browsing experience has been improved. After the improvement, it can finally be redirected to browse the web pages adapted to iPhone. But the upgrade we most want to see is a navigation button that can return to the top of the page by clicking, and we hope to update it as soon as possible.

Other main features include the updated native folder function on WP 8.1, and the upgraded Bluetooth function (supporting aptX, etc.).

WP always seems to lag behind other mobile platforms, but with these small updates, the gap between WP and other mobile platforms is narrowing. Finally, let's wait and see how to catch up with the big force, namely Microsoft, in pushing several updates.

Summary:

Nokia (or Microsoft?) has provided many upgrades on the 930, including the 5-inch 1080p screen. After getting used to the large screen, it is always difficult to return to the small screen.

The appearance design of 930 is really unknown, especially with the addition of younger and more dynamic green and orange, the aluminum alloy frame looks very high-grade, and the curved Corning Gorilla glass surface has a layer of coating, which makes it feel great.

The performance of the 930 is also strong. Although the running score does not represent the daily use experience, it is not totally without reference value, because the running speed of the 930 is really much faster than the previous WP.

Nokia mobile phones have a good reputation for taking photos. The new ISP in 930 provides faster focusing and taking photos. In addition, after the Lumia Denim upgrade is pushed in the future, 930 will have a better photo experience.

After the release of WP 8, WP has experienced considerable evolution. Although there is still a gap between it and Android/iOS, the gap is much smaller. However, Microsoft's road to improve WP is still far away, but according to the pace of the release of WP 8.1 GDR1, perhaps Microsoft will catch up quickly.

Of course, 930 is not without its shortcomings. First, it has a general sense of grip. Second, the absence of Nokia Glance has also made the old users of WP a little unaccustomed. We have been used to the constant progress of technology, and it is naturally unbearable for retrogression.

When evaluating a revolutionary device, we should always compare it with its predecessors. Apart from the Glance function, the 930 is a huge upgrade compared with the 920/925/928. The camera is better, the screen is bigger and clearer, and the appearance design is more brilliant. But we also need to compare the 930 with other devices on the market, The 930 certainly has a high level of photographic ability in the industry, but this camera has greatly increased the thickness of the 930. Compared with the 930, the WP version of HTC ONE M8 has a better grip, perhaps more attractive.

If 930 can have Nokia Glance, then 930 will have obvious advantages, but unfortunately there are not so many ifs in the world. 930 must compete with competitors in every aspect to win the favor of picky consumers.
