When it comes to glass, the first thing we think of must be Corning's gorilla glass. With the rise of the iPhone, gorilla glass has become a synonym for screen scratch free and no film. However, gorillas are not the only mobile phone glass supplier in the world, but we generally don't care about the manufacturers ranking next. We only remember the first but rarely the second. Japan's AGC is the second largest glass supplier in the world, and their glass called Dragontrail has also been used by many mobile phones, It is also said that Sony's recently launched xperia z uses the same company's products.
Dragontrail's glass is one of the manufacturers that dare to challenge gorilla glass at present, claiming that it is harder than the glass of iPhone 4. Dragontrail, like gorilla glass, requires a chemical strengthening process in order to improve its strength. The difference is that the dragon tail belongs to aluminum silicate chemically strengthened glass, and the gorilla belongs to soda lime glass. During the strengthening process, the glass needs to be soaked in a special solution. Through the exchange of sodium and potassium ions between the glass material and the solution, a compressive stress layer is formed on the glass surface to improve the strength.
The strength of Dragontrail is 6 times that of ordinary soda lime glass, and the stress value of ordinary chemically strengthened glass is about 300-450MPa, while the stress value of chemically strengthened Dragontrail glass is more than 600MPa, just like that of American Corning Gorilla glass. Its thickness is only 0.28mm, so it is called 6M drop without pressure and can bear 60KG weight.
The strength of Corning Gorilla Generation 2 glass is 5 times that of ordinary soda lime glass, its thinnest can only reach 0.55mm, and its weight can be up to 55kg. In terms of thickness, bearable weight, strength and other parameters, Dragontrail is no worse than the gorilla generation 2.
At present, many manufacturers have begun to use Dragontrail glass. In addition to Sony Xperia z mentioned above, domestic Nubia Z5, Xiaomi 2 and Galaxy Nexus also use Dragontrail glass. In addition, it is said that some iPad 2 also uses Dragontrail glass.
It seems that Dragontrail is really competitive with the gorilla 2. However, at CES this year, Corning launched the third generation gorilla glass. The new generation of products uses the native damage resistance technology. Compared with the previous generation of products, the visible scratches are reduced by 40% and the structural strength is increased by 40%. So Dragontrail still needs some time to completely surpass gorillas.
