Lossless and more powerful magic lamp firmware enables Canon 6D to realize RAW video
Lossless and more powerful magic lamp firmware enables Canon 6D to realize RAW video

Since the SLR camera can shoot video, more and more people begin to abandon DV and switch to SLR for operation. Although SLR cannot replace the camera in many places, it has good performance in color, image quality and depth of field, even surpassing many professional cameras.

American TV series Dr House was shot by Canon 5DII

But the SLR is still far from the film level shooting equipment. Simply speaking, the data recording mode of the SLR is far from the film level equipment. Film shooting mostly adopts lossless recording mode, while ordinary DV and camera basically adopt lossy compression shooting format.

Using lossless format to record video can keep more details of the picture and reduce the loss of image quality caused by compression. In addition, lossless format can leave more controllable space for video post-processing, such as adjusting exposure, color mixing, etc. This is a bit similar to Raw and JPEG in SLR photos.

Recently, with the introduction of Magic Lantern firmware, we have been able to achieve lossless shooting of Raw video in Canon's SLR camera, making the shooting effect of SLR video even better. Today, we will use Canon's 6D as a demonstration to teach you how to make Canon 6D support RAW video shooting by brushing the firmware of Magic Lantern (see the official website for other models).

The firmware and software mentioned below can be clicked here

1 Confirm the firmware version of your 6D first. If your firmware version is 1.1.3, please reduce the firmware to 1.1.2 first. The firmware of 1.1.2 is in the attachment above. Copy 6D000112.FIR in the attachment folder Canon 1.1.2 Firmware to the SD card, and then click the firmware version in the camera to downgrade it.

2 Then format the card in the camera

3 Run the EOScard.exe file in the attachment EOScard, check the two options EOS_DEVELOP and BOOTDISK, and then press Save.

4 Delete all files in SD card, not format!!

5 Set the camera to M file, copy all contents in the attachment Files to run Magic Lantern on 6D Firmware 1.1.2 folder to the SD card, and click the firmware version in the camera again to upgrade the camera firmware.

If the upgrade is successful, a screen of green text will appear on the screen.

6 Turn off 6D, insert the SD card into the computer, and format the card with the computer.

7 Copy all the files in the attachment Files to run Magic Lantern on 6D Firmware 1.1.3 to the SD card.

8 Insert the SD card into the camera and update the firmware by pressing the firmware version in the camera again

9 After the upgrade, insert the card into the computer, run the EOScard.exe file in step 3 again, continue to check the EOS_DEVELOP and BOOTDISK options, and click Save.

10 Delete all the contents in the SD card, put the files in the directory Files to run Magic Lantern on 6D Firmware 1.1.3 into the SD card again, and insert the card back into the camera to finish the machine brushing.

How to use 6D to shoot video RAW video? First, set the camera to camera mode, and then press and hold the delete button of the camera to call up the magic lamp setting menu.

In the setting menu, select the camera icon as shown in the above figure, then select Raw Video, press the set key, and then press star to start. After shooting, you will find that your camera has an additional file with the suffix. raw. This is the lossless video we shot.

This firmware has many problems at present, but it can let us experience the fun of lossless video shooting. Please wait for us to evaluate the specific shooting effect later. (If the camera doesn't respond, just shut down the machine and remove the battery to restart it)
