The strongest SoC in Antarctica? APQ8064 Re battle Freezing Test
The strongest SoC in Antarctica? APQ8064 Re battle Freezing Test

stay When Nexus 4 first came out The serious CPU frequency reduction problem has been exposed. The specific performance is that the Nexus 4 under high load often fails to reach the nominal 1.5GHz under normal temperature. More and more mobile phones use APQ8064, including domestic 1080P dual Find 5 and Z5 This test is still to let the mobile phone work in a low temperature environment, and observe whether the APQ8064 mobile phone will improve its CPU computing performance.

testing environment

mobile phone:

Nubia Z5 (test prototype, Android 4.1.2, version number)

OPPO Find 5 (official retail version, Android 4.1.1, version number 130201)

Google Nexus 4 (Android 4.2.2, cfX revision 20130213)

Software:

Anrabbit evaluation 3.1.1, Epic Citadel, PPSSPP high pass floating point version

In the APQ8064 mobile phone, we can see some information about the mobile phone temperature control through the RE manager. Open/system/etc/thermald.conf, and you can see some CPU frequency control strategies. This is the reason why some mobile phones have frequency reduction problems. The following is the screenshot of HTC Butterfly. It can be seen that when the CPU temperature reaches 62 degrees, the CPU frequency will drop to about 1.1GHz( The temperature of 62 degrees here is different from the temperature measured outside our mobile phones )▼

nubia Z5

The first test is Nubia Z5. The following is the thermald.conf information. It can be seen from the file that when the CPU detects that the temperature exceeds 58 degrees, the CPU frequency will drop to about 1GHz, which is slightly conservative ▼

Then we carried out the freezing test on Z5, and Antu Rabbit successfully exceeded 20000 points, which was a great improvement compared with our common test results ▼

In Epic Citadel, in our last horizontal evaluation test, the number of frames of Z5 was 30.7, which was not ideal. This time in the freezing environment, the number of frames increased to 38 ▼

Next is the PSP simulator test. This simulator is sensitive to the CPU frequency, so the Z5 frame number in the freezing environment has also increased to a certain extent, but not by much. Reaper 7, rising 5-7 frames, has reached the basic smooth line ▼

The masked knight is a super peak hero, rising by about 5 frames, which is still a certain gap with some APQ8064 phones that exceed 50 frames ▼

Find5

First observe the thermald.conf of Find5, which will reduce the CPU frequency to 1.18GHz ▼ at 72 degrees

Through the freezing test, the performance of Antu Hare has not changed much. Observation of the results shows that in the CPU part, the performance of Find5 is not much different from that of other mobile phones that use APQ8064 normally, but there is a certain gap in 3D drawing performance. This means that the Find5 CPU will not suffer from serious frequency reduction when running at room temperature. However, the overall performance will be affected to some extent due to the poor GPU optimization. So for Find5, the top priority is to improve the performance of GPU ▼

Google Nexus 4

In the evaluation of Nexus 4, we conducted a freeze test on it, and the actual results also improved. After a period of development, many cores in the third-party ROM of Nexus 4 have been able to solve the problem of frequency reduction. The following is the screenshot ▼ of thermald.conf of Nexus 4 in this test

It can be seen that the thermald.conf does not control the frequency.

It can also be seen from the score run of Anthare that the Nexus 4 without frequency reduction is still excellent in performance ▼

summary

Combined with the previous freezing test of Nexus 4 and this test, some APQ8064 mobile phones do have the problem of CPU frequency reduction, which will have a certain impact on the smoothness of the system. However, due to the conservative CPU frequency control strategy of some manufacturers and the high temperature of the mobile phone itself, it is easy to cause serious frequency reduction problems of the mobile phone under high load. After the mobile phone is frozen, it will have an immediate effect. For most users, normal use will not be at this ultra-low temperature, so this is just a limit test. The hardware of Android phones has developed rapidly, but we often find that some phones with strong hardware configuration do not perform well in actual use, which has a lot to do with the optimization of the system itself. Manufacturers should give priority to ensuring the overall smoothness of the system, and then develop additional functions to improve the user experience.
