According to foreign media reports recently, Samsung OLED flexible display screen (folding screen) will likely achieve mass production. Although Samsung has not yet given a clear timetable, it is expected that Samsung smart phones with OLED flexible display screen will be launched as early as the first half of next year. This news also aroused people's interest and speculation about the future display technology.
"Transparent", "Flexible"“ OLED "It has become a hot word in the display field in recent years. This year, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the United States, Samsung and LGD both exhibited 55 inch large size OLED TVs, and Samsung also announced that it will launch flexible OLED displays in the first half of next year. Just last month, BOE successfully developed the world's first large-scale product integrating oxide TFT backplane technology and inkjet printing technology AM-OLED Color display screen
All of these send a clear signal to the public: the next war in the display field has begun, and OLED has become a battleground for panel manufacturers. So, OLED What kind of technology is it? What is its relationship with TFT-LCD (Thin Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Display)? What will the future display technology look like?
Relationship between OLED and TFT-LCD
Organic light-emitting display devices (OLEDs) can be divided into passive OLEDs (PM-OLED) and active OLEDs (AM-OLED) according to different driving modes. PM-OLED can only be used for simple pen segment and small capacity dot matrix display. To achieve dynamic image and large capacity display AM-OLED No way.
OLED is an active light-emitting device without backlight, with fast response speed, adjustable emission spectrum of organic materials, and thin film structure as its light-emitting layer, so it has greater advantages in dynamic image display and color, and is easier to achieve transparent and flexible display mode. At present, OLED is mainly used in mobile phones and lighting. In the future, OLED will penetrate into television and a wider range of applications. Its folding and bending characteristics enable it to be worn on hands and bodies. The vision of integrating windows, mirrors, tables and display functions will also become possible. So, AM-OLED Will it replace TFT-LCD? At the 2012 Beijing International Flat Panel Display Summit Forum, BOE Chairman Wang Dongsheng proposed a new definition of semiconductor display industry. This new concept summarizes the evolution and interrelationship of display technology from a philosophical perspective in two sentences. First, from CRT (cathode ray tube) to TFT-LCD is the interruption and start of technology; Second, from TFT-LCD to AM-OLED is the extension and development of technology.
Therefore, TFT-LCD and AM-OLED are not antagonistic in technology, nor are they pure substitutes, but are interlinked and extended. The foundation and core competitiveness of TFT-LCD industry is the most important foundation for the development of AM-OLED, which we should understand clearly.
New growth momentum of display technology
In the past 20 years, TFT-LCD has been the absolute leading technology in the display industry, which has no doubt. The important driving force of the first three application waves of TFT-LCD is the substitution of CRT market and the scale growth caused by this substitution, but now this substitution penetration has been weak. So, what is the new growth impetus of display technology?
The author believes that it is consumer demand, which can be embodied in two aspects: products that bring consumers a sense of pleasant experience and products that can change and meet people's new lifestyle.
What are the technical requirements of this product form? Three keywords: First, Smart, that is, intelligence. People can interact with machines, and machines can be interconnected. The functional boundaries of TV, NB, Mobile and other products will become increasingly blurred; The second is Vivid, which is realistic, dynamic, bright and lifelike, such as small and medium-sized 500PPI mobile products, large size UHD products, naked eye 3D and transparent display; The third is flexible, that is, the product is flexible: lighter, thinner, bendable or even curlable; The production process is flexible (R2R, roll to roll), and even product functions can be flexible. Sometimes it is a display product, but at the same time it can also become a window, mirror, etc. of a building.
Products with these three technologies will become a new wave to promote the development of the display industry. Of course, these waves need not only the development of display technology itself, but also the development of interconnection, communication and other technologies. AM-OLED has greater advantages in meeting the requirements of Smart, Vivid and Flexible. Even though AM-OLED still has many problems in cost, process, material and technical route, these problems will be solved and improved with the increase of investment in the industry and the expansion of the industry scale.
